Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

The shot of the stormtroopers at the rally... the robed person on the balcony far off in the background...

I've looked at that image close up for minutes on end and it reignites a theory I toyed with in my mind a year or so ago. If that person is who I vaguely suspect that person to be... then this film - this trilogy - has the potential to go into some very shocking, very dark, very disturbing places that would truly cement Star Wars as a "Saga" in the truest sense of that word...

Who? Leia?

Original Trilogy: Luke's lightsaber color

Yellow plastic was cheaper back then.

Somehow I expected a less prosaic reason... but that makes perfect sense considering this was the company that would later turn the Gamorrean Guard into Friar Tuck.

But Ben's lightsaber was blue. Why not give him a yellow lightsaber, too? Interestingl, the Luke and Ben large size action figures (dolls) had blue lightsabers.

But in the Lucasfilm vaults there is a 4k remaster of the original trilogy that has been tweaked and changed from the latest release, and that 4k version has Han shooting first.

I have a baaaad feeling about this...

Since Han shoots first, I guess that means Greedo still shoots. Was the original shot used or is this not the last we've seen of the rubber neck Solo?

UPDATE: Well gang, I got spoofed again. It looks like Greedo still shoots first in A New Hope, as confirmed by Garth Franklin of Dark Horizons who lives in Australia and thus in tomorrow. This is a bummer. I had a source confirm to me that there are tweaks, but I guess this isn't one of them! My apologies for any undue hope I caused.

What are these other tweaks?

I've been working on a 4K restoration of Star Wars from a number of 16-bit 4K Technicolor film scans for many years. There is a Vimeo channel for it with lots of before/afters, and comparisons with the current incarnation and clips from Reliance MediaWorks showreel, etc. I've been fortunate to have several members of the original VFX crew consulting. If you'd like to check it out, here is the link:

Is this an official restoration?

I'be got my fingers crossed for the PT deleted scenes from the DVD to appear in HD. They're listed under "legacy content," but hopefully sourced from a master and not just literally from the DVD.

Don't hold your breath on this one... I'm pretty sure it will be the same DVD deal. BUT DIGITAL!!!

Are we sure that Georgie boy sold SW? This is the kind of BS he would do, I bet he is still having a big wet orgasm with this release just because is the same of business cap he is used to.

Disney may be doing this because they know it'll make money... it's Star Wars after all.

What I find really interesting is they aren't advertising this collection with episode numbers like they have in the past. I guess they want to remain consistent with The Force Awakens marketing.

This is what I find most exciting about these commercials.

That being said, the fact that these digital releases are the SEs doesn't worry me because I think that an OUT release will debut in some sort of box set, not online streaming. The new "bonus extras" are intriguing, I have no idea what that'll be.

That's a good point. Releasing the OUT digitally and only digitally could end up like another GOUT release.

Kylo Ren’s Imperial Shuttle flies with TIE Fighters to a Star Destroyer.

Sounds terrible like the Special Edition. "alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival."

Darth Vader’s helmet sitting on a podium. Sounds stupid it burned up in a fire.

No Luke Skywalker. Echoes the rumors that Mark Hamill is only in the film for a few minutes and is also dumb.

Sounds like the opening shot of ROTJ to me. It also communicates to the audience the Empire is still in business.

It's silly to assume Vader only had one suit and no spare parts. (It's the thing keeping him alive, if you remember.) In fact, it helps explain the differences in the costume across the OT.

Do you really want the trailer to give away the whole deal? We have eight months to go. Given the amount of time Mark spent getting back in shape, and the time spent in England filming, it's going to be more than a glorified cameo at the very least.

I hope you're right! However, Carrie also spent a great deal of time and energy getting back into shape, but I have a feeling she won't get much screen time.

Some people hear a difference, but each orchestra interprets a cue differently. That's not to say one is better than other - it's merely a preference. LA musicians have performed amazing scores with Williams such as Tintin and Crystal Skull so there's no reason to think they won't deliver now. With Williams conducting, he'll be able to do as many re-takes and make it sound to his liking. And they are giving him many months to record the score, too. This is probably one of the main reasons why Williams isn't scoring Spielberg's latest flick.

It's confirmed at starwars.com. Williams hasn't left the U.S. since 2005, so it's really no surprise that he's not going to London to record with the LSO. The only way would be for the LSO to come here and that just isn't feasible since they will be recording the score over several months. The teaser music was recorded in LA and I thought it sounded great. Time for a new tradition, I guess.

John Williams to Record Star Wars: The Force Awakens Score in Los Angeles

John Williams is currently hard at work composing the score for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will be recorded in Los Angeles. For the recording of the score, Williams will work with members of the superb freelance orchestra with which he’s recorded numerous film scores over the years. The music will be recorded over several months while working in tandem with the film’s editorial and special effects teams on the West Coast.

While previous films in the saga were scored at Abbey Road with the celebrated London Symphony Orchestra, this will be the first time a Star Wars score has been recorded in the United States.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with the very best musicians in both the U.K. and the U.S.,” says Williams. “The London Symphony Orchestra has consistently performed with great artistry on all six of the prior films in the Star Wars saga, and I will be forever grateful for their commitment and dedication. Equally, it has been my honor to have worked with my brilliant colleagues in Los Angeles, and always appreciate the invaluable contribution they’ve made to my scores and to those of other composers.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.

To be honest, I didn't find Desplat's score for the last two Harry Potter films very engaging. I much preferred the work of Nicholas Hooper on the Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince films.

I'll have to listen to Desplat's score again to see if it's really as "meh" as I remember, or if associated Harry Potter fatigue simply made me tune it out.

I didn't seem like Desplat was given much creative freedom with the Potter scores, which is unfortunate. There are a few moments that are reminiscent of Williams' style.
