Waterworld ABC Cut? A ton of info - see McFly's posts for details (Released)

Yeah, I remember hearing about the logo removal filters. A little googling revealed that there's a pretty popular one for virtualdub, but it only works for AVIs...

And a guide (some of the responses have some before and after comparisons):

For other programs, I'm not sure what you'd use.

There was discussion about this a few months back, but Disney issued a statement saying they had nixed the idea.

I would much rather have the logos than do anything that would degrade the quality of the video. Logos are so obnoxious now anyways, with all the animated crap, that the sedate little logos in question aren't a big deal.

So mcfly (god, that sounds weird), you actually captured the movie directly from the broadcast to videotape? If so, that would automatically make your copy the best version of this broadcast, by far. Or is your capture just of the theatrical version of the film?

Me confused.

I'll be damned, I didn't notice that the bars in the ST's mouth had been removed. Sheesus. And I kinda figured that the "XO Project" shot was an after shot, seeing as how it looks a hell of a lot better than the other shots.

Honestly, I'm not a big SW fan, but I've found this whole process really, really fascinating, so I'm really looking forward to whatever details you guys provide about the process that you've utilized in this restoration. I hope you release enough details about the process so that in the future, it can be utilized to restore older films that have had many releases of varying, but never ideal, quality.

That Japanese laserdisc is just a big piece of crap, isn't it? BTW, some nice before and after shots of the work on the LD transfer would be nice to see. I'm curious as to just how far it's come.

And it looks like the DVNR they did on the film for the GOUT disc partially erased that rubber ring the stormtrooper is holding. Nice.

No, if I remember right, I believe his tape was what started this whole thread. It's the first version of the Encore showing, but RevB later found a cleaner version of the Encore showing, which is what he's torrenting.

(Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.)

THANK YOU. Blurring out logos is far more distracting than simply leaving the damn things, which is why I've been so pleased to see logos left in tact on distributed TV shows the last couple years.

Looking at the samples you posted, it took me a little while to realize that that denoising filter was actually doing something (didn't see the dirt visible in the sky at first). However, I think you should lighten up on the color levels a bit. I'd have to dig out my DVDs to check, but is he really that red?

I have a 720p version of Waterworld that was reencoded from the HDDVD released recently. If you want any screenshots from that so you have some reference shots for color and whatnot, please let me know.

Oh but my laziness is undending and infinite.

So...the 2-disc torrent Reverend Beastly is talking about is or is not what I am looking for? Even if it isn't I probably want it...

Then just download it.
Well, I was trying to figure out if ReverendBeastly's is the workprint, which it seems it is, which means I still need the ABC cut from somewhere else.

Yeah...I think I misspoke earlier. What he uploaded is the workprint. We're still waiting on the extended cut.

DRESDEN FILES - 2-HOUR PILOT PRESERVATION (Released)

I seriously doubt that'll happen. Considering that they chose to compress it into a 45 minute episode, rather than squeeze it gently into a 90 minute two-parter tells me that they have no intention of releasing the full thing, especially since it contains elements that were not incorporated into the story. Also, just about every show has a pretty long pilot produced that is later cut down to some degree...some are 5 minutes longer than air time, and some are much longer...but I've rarely seen these reach commercial release.

That's especially true in this case, as it sounds like there were scenes needing lots of sfx that were simply edited out, rather than having the special effects created. So...if somebody's got this rough cut, torrent it somewhere.

DRESDEN FILES - 2-HOUR PILOT PRESERVATION (Released)

EDIT: Please note, it looks like I was beaten to the punch on the link to the blog. But, I quote it, so...whatever.

It appears that there is a longer version out there.

http://her0press.blogspot.com/2007/02/dresden-files-unaired-pilot-storm-front.html

Through the magic of the Internet I have managed to see the 107-minute rough cut of Storm Front, the unaired pilot for The Dresden Files.

As a rough cut most of the major effects sequences were missing - replaced with captions or temporary effects - which meant the giant toad demon from the book was just a big, bald bruiser who wouldn't have looked out of place as a demon on Charmed.

On the positive side the episode featured dreamlike cinematography and fast cuts that gave it a unique look, and the story at least hinted at some of the elements of the Dresdenverse that have been missing from the aired episodes - from Harry's cat to the disruptive effects his magic has on modern technology. There's even a cheeky cameo from the Blue Beetle (Harry's battered VW from the books) in an early garage scene, but that probably won't be enough to stave off much nerdfury - although it did give me a geeky fanboy smile.

And, as in the novel, Harry ends up dating Susan the reporter - but where is she in the episodes that have been shown on Sky One, if these were supposed to follow?

Familiar elements are heavily outweighed by the changes. The Big Bad's motives are totally different, and had I not just read the book Storm Front I might have almost found his actions understandable (if not acceptable, of course!) The spectacular climax of the book is also sadly missing.

Jim Butcher's complex, interwoven, multilayered plot has been grossly simplified and streamlined to such an extent that - along with all the character changes - you can't help but wonder sometimes why the programme makers didn't just start from scratch with their own hero and his own universe! It also makes me worry how these 107 minutes (a two hour time-slot) will be cut down to an hour - for screening later in the show's run - and still maintain plot integrity.

I have always thought Waterworld had a nice Mad-Max-ish feel to it and kinda hoped Universal would give it another chance on DVD someday.

The UK Sci-Fi and Encore captures both have the same content, videowise, except that Sci-Fi has a watermark, but looks better overall than the Encore capture. The Encore version, however, has an uncensored audio track.

And next time, if you're too lazy to read, don't ask someone to take the time to write a post. Come back when you're feeling more energetic.

Okay, from what I saw on IMDB, that cut is significantly longer (what the hell is the extra material about?), but from what I've read, it's disliked because the audio mix is crappy.

RB:

By workprint, are you talking about an actual workprint, as in, a rough cut longer than the extended edition? If so, then hell yeah! Is there anything particularly different or interesting?

And btw, when do you plan to upload your copy of the director's cut? Please do so soon. And are you intending to use Demonoid, or Spleen?

as far as the water mark goes impossible to get rid of altogether

Actually, I'd imagine that if both versions become available, some adventurous soul would take the unwatermarked area from the encore version, and lay that over the watermarked area on the sci-fi version. Hopefully they would do some color correction and what not so it fit in nicely, but I think it'd definitely be possible to make it look pretty decent...better than blurring it out, that's for sure. Actually, I prefer watermarks to blurred watermarks...the blurring is distracting as hell.

Is there actually enough unique material (not alternate cuts) amongst the various cuts to make this endeavor worth it? Or are you simply going to wind up with an "ultimate cut" about 45 seconds longer than the longest of the commercial cuts?
