Idea: fan edit... for those who like Zombies
Time
I also think you're going to have a difficult time making it flow, but it'll be interesting to see how it works out.

My suggestion--don't use the Resident Evil storyline as the basis for the origin of the zombies. It's a crappy storyline. Go with 28 Days Later. It's minimalistic, but it gets the point across, and you can still use the lab guys that pop up throughout the Resident Evil movies. They're just involved with the creation of "Rage", rather than the whole T-Virus thing.

Idea: Roger Corman Fantastic Four - an edit...
Time
Uhhh...

Question one, why 16:9? If I remember right, this thing is only available from the view VHS copies that are floating around, so all you have to work with is an already pan and scanned film, unless the video is open matte, which I seriously doubt. So you'd be impinging upon an already cropped image, and shrinking down the crappy resolution to an even smaller resolution.

Question two, how're you going to get 5.1 audio out of this thing? Is it even stereo? Hell, I think it might be mono. Without the original, separate audio elements, you're going to have a hell of a time doing any sort of remixing of the audio. Every time there's dialogue and sound effects occurring simultaneously, you won't be able to touch the audio.

I'd strongly suggest leaving the video frame as is (1.33:1) and leaving the audio as it is (if you want, do some hiss reduction or something like that, if necessary). Focus on cleaning up the video, and the re-editing.

The clean-up isn't a very in-depth job, you could probably have the whole thing wrapped up in a night, but considering the crappiness of the source (I've seen two versions--one terrible looking, and one simply okay), you won't be able to put too much shine on this turd. Hence the brevity of that aspect of the project.

The editing is where this baby needs a lot of love. But at the end of the day, perhaps it just needs to be burned...

Zion, I would consider a replacement for Laserman if you don't hear from him sooner or later. Personally I hope Laserman can recover and get back into the swing of things to finnish this project, but if he can't come back, then this project might allready be dead, unless someone can step in to fill his shoes.

Laserman is fighting for his life and you are talking about replacing him!?!?!
Laserman is irreplaceable...

Nobody is talking about wanting to replace him--simply the reality of having to make the choice between allowing the project to die, or finding somebody to take his place, if he is unable to resume his work. Having to make that choice may become a reality. Hopefully not. Arnie.d, if that last line of your post is in fact true, then in fact the choice might have to be made to never finish the project, or to return to the initial focus of the project--simply releasing the original, unaltered transfers from the laserdiscs.

Wow, just wow. I feel for you. I can't even imagine. I want so bad to see this, but this is your baby, and to see your baby hurt is the worse.

I hope your backup software recovers most or all of your data...if you do backups to DVD from now on, is there any way to avoid using RAR files, or are the files just too damn big to fit on a single DVD? Just...ugh. Backing up crap is an absolute bitch.

And I guess the moral of the story is, you can't back up too much, and always be super cautious when somebody offers you a deal that seems too good to be true. Sigh.

That quote is from another thread on this forum titled "1997 SE TB Digital Broadcasts". I have not read all the way through the thread, but you might want to look into it if you think it could help you with bits of detail that were lost on the 2004 transfers, like the sandcrawler shots.

Also, that shot of Chewbacca with a medal is very cool

There are standard resolution broadcasts of the 97 SE (from that time period up til before the DVD releases) that have been recorded, but the HD releases are the 2004 versions of the films.

Lightbulbs will have shadows if they are next to other lit bulbs.

The light bulb itself will, but not the light the bulb produces. Comparing a bulb to what is essentially a laser pole, for any lack of any other way of characterizing it, isn't a one to one comparison. It's comprised of very intense light, and that's about it. Try shining a beam of light perpendicular to another beam of light and see if you can get it to cast a shadow.

But what I really like is making the lightsaber have a surrounding glow, illuminating other objects. That looks really cool.

If it's solid enough to stop solid objects, it can be solid enough to block light, surely.

The sun is solid, and it doesn't cast any shadow. Same with light bulbs. If an object emits light it is impossible it can cast a shadow.

Bingo. It'd be like the flame of a blowtorch casting a shadow.

I had a 16mm print of SOTS transferred to avi, but it needs major cleanup work and color correction - way beyond the scope of what I can do with it.

Always seems that a nice version of the film is always so close.

Somehow, I think somebody's gonna want to take a look at that.

Screenshots, please.
