The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
A few days ago, when you said that this newest copy of the workprint was the best, I asked if you were comparing it to the one you just got in the mail a week or so ago. You said yes, and that if you were to compare it to the older workprints, I would wanna puke.

You're absolutely right. Jesus Christ. I forgot how f'ed up the line sketches were in the workprint. In this new version, you can actually see what's going on. Good god. Again, I request a torrent of the workprint, if some kind soul could oblige. I want to watch this damn thing in a decent format, as this edit isn't going to be done soon enough.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go stab myself in the eyes.

Was feeling bored, so I played around in photoshop for a few minutes with one of the screenshots from the newest workprint. Noticed a couple of couple of thing. First of all, obviously, the color is way too yellow/orange, if you compare it with the shots from the DVD. The whites (Nod's robes and eyes) are all tan. Zigzag's robes are tannish brown. So just a quick shot of how the colors in the workprint could turn out with some color correction (excuse the compression artifacts from going from a 300kb png to 30kb jpg):

Secondly, there's some sort of damage to the print, possibly interlacing artifacts:

These artifacts are also visible in the screenshot of the thief in the sleigh looking thing (Screen 8). They're especially visible in his eyes. What's the deal?

Would it be possible to lay the source music over the Thief audio, lining the music up so that lines up with the background music running beneath the spoken words? Basically, so that the good quality music for the most part blots out the lesser quality background track, and the only audio we're hearing from the video soundtrack is what is spoken by the characters?

Of course, if you're re-editing scenes where the music is used, that might become rather nightmarish...hmm. Do you happen to know any audio experts that would be interested in working on this project? You could focus on restoring the video, while somebody else could put together the best possible audio track?

Could somebody torrent the Northfell/Emule version of the workprint, at Myspleen, Demonoid, or just freagin' somewhere? It'd be a hell of a lot more effective than trying to get it off of Emule. Plus I'd like to play around with it in TMPGEnc with a few different filters. It would just be nice to add this workprint to the collection.

Y'know, I'm starting to think that all those rumors about Williams destroying footage, were nothing more than that...rumors. When you have a project with that many people involved, copies of work in progress are going to be changing hands, people are going to be taking print duplicates home with them...it's just the way folks are. Especially if you're involved in a film as gorgeous as this one.

And it looks like the folks are finally starting to come out of the woodwork. BTW, how did this person hear of the project?

(Edit: I started this post before OCP made his post, but I'm too lazy to edit this to reflect what OCP just posted)

There was an article posted a while back in the King Kong thread (I think), about merging soft colored images with sharp desaturated images. To be more specific, it was about the restoration of an old Doctor Who episode. BBC only had an original copy in black and white of what was originally a color episode. They found somebody that had made a color tape recording of the show, but was obviously much softer than the source B&W copy. So they layered the color image over the black and white, and came up with an image that was better than the two images going into it. Obviously, this would be a major pain in the ass in this case, as there's probably incocnsistencies in frame counts for various scenes, plus the videos would have to be re-encoded to have identical aspect ratios (and resolutions?). Also, there's the trick of actually merging the two. But I think this would be something worth looking into, because while the color is better on the new workprint.

Also, the less saturated (older) workprint you're showing--this isn't the one you just got in the mail, is it?

As for this, it seems like Demonoid has been having problems all day. Have you tried getting uploader status on myspleen and putting your edit there? Just a thought.

Demonoid was down at the time for an update--they redid the look of the site. Anyways, it's in good shape now.

I have fiddled with the blacks before, but to hide that issue, I'd have to complete screw up the black levels on my monitor.

BTW, something I noticed a while ago in the trailer, and which I'm shocked no one else has mentioned--

The Animatrix rips off a shot that is featured in OCP's trailer. Remember where the shot with the horseman riding in slow motion?

http://www.hostimage.org/img/5418180.jpg

Compare that to a shot from the short called "The Second Renaissance, Part 2":

You would have to watch both shots to really get the full impact of it, but I'm shocked at how blatantly the style of movement was copied...

For the hell of it I decided to check it out. Right now, they're playing the Miramax cut. Now, I had watched the intro of the M-Cut, but I had only watched the beginning narration about the golden balls and shut it off. On GBS, when I got on the feed, they were somewhere in the middle of the movie, and Tack and the Thief were talking....god damn. I made it about 30 seconds in before I shut it off. The voices are so, so, bad. So bad.

I want to see this thing, but I can't handle the horror of the Miramax cut, and I don't want to watch the workprint. Please hurry up OCP....please.

I'd also really, really like to know what programs and filters you're using. That looks excellent. My only complaint is that the hair looks a little blurred, but I have a hunch that that is the case with the transfer itself, and it just isn't as noticeable with it being all washed out. Either way, won't be able to tell when it's in motion. FANTASTIC JOB.

Tell those pussies at Disney to suck it.

Also, just out of curiosity, what's the runtime on the Recobbled rough cut?

My Re-Edits of The Pink Panther: 'The Pink Panther Strikes Again - Extended' (Released)

Titles...hmmm....the title should reflect that this is an ending of the series. Slightly somber, perhaps, especially considering that the viewer likely knows that Sellers died during the production of the film you're deriving this stuff from.

A Shot in the Pink (sounds like porn...)
Fade to Pink
The End of the Trail

Ya know, considering this wrap-up piece is a reworking of "Trail of the Pink Panther," where you're taking it and making something new of it, why not:
"The Trail Not Taken"--A reference to the poem, "The Road Not Taken".

Dude, I can't tell what's the original background, and what is stuff you pieced together. NICE. Does it hold up when you layer the animation over it?

That's been my one worry. In your Return of the Jedi restoration, where you resurrected Anakin's eyebrows, and in Star Wars Magic, in the "widescreened" Jabba scene, you can tell you layered one image over another, as they don't quite register, and while it's nice, it's a little disconcerting. Are the layers of animation registering to one another more easily?

But OCP, seriously, I'm really, really impressed. It looks like you are truly doing the best you can, and way, way better than anybody would have ever expected. What with Disney's assistance that the materials to restore the film weren't available, you're making them look like a bunch of douchebags. Nice work.
