So are these still only going up on Myspleen? I managed to find the older despecialized editions on another site but I am doubtful I’ll have the same luck with rotj 2.5. Since Myspleen seems to not be doing invites anymore, anyone have any advice for someone who wants to get this but doesn’t already have an account? Seems like the game has changed and it’s a lot harder for new people now 😦

EDIT: lol just saw those posts. Guess I should look into utoz, unless it’s just as hard to get into?

I’m in the same boat. Everything I have so far was from tehparadox. Will ROTJ 2.5 be available there or will I need an invite to Myspleen?

Like I said to the other guy, it actually ends up there first, before myspleen. So you’re set.

yeah it’s tough cause i mean, sometimes there’s not a lot you can contribute to the discussions of these things without having access to them. so i’ve basically just lurked since last year

I find it’s generally a great idea to lurk on forums for a while before posting. You end up having many of the would-be stupid questions answered already.

When people request an invite, I go to their profile to see when their account was created and how much they’ve posted.
If they created the account that day and all they’ve posted is that one post asking for an invite, nope, sorry.
The way I see it, the people who deserve invites are the ones who have stuck around here and contributed to some degree to the conversations.

I only posted like once before I got an invite and I’ve stuck around.

Me too. Though I had been lurking on and off since the X0 project days (don’t think I ever had an account back then, but I checked the likely email addresses anyway!).

Does myspleen still even allow invites to be given out anymore? I’ve actually never given one to anybody and I have no idea how to do it anyway.

There’s a section at the top right that says invites. You max out at 10, but they refill after a few weeks, one at a time. I sent a ton out when TN1 released SSE. All but one user turned out to be a hit and runner. Of course.

You can thank all the hundreds of hit and runners who begged on OT and got them before you got here.

It’s a file locker site like mega. The links generally get posted on a forum called tehparadox, as the links are not allowed here.

Das Imperium schlägt zurück - Despecialized Edition 2.1 (German) (Released)

There are actually a few more differences in the v2.1 version.
These shots have been replaced with cleaned TN1 Grindhouse shots as well:

And before anyone asks, no there will not be a v2.1 English version - going through all the logistics of putting out a new release just because of these few shots, when I’m planning on having a v2.5 version with a lot more fixes done quite soon simply isn’t worth it.

Just curious what your process is for those shots (since I don’t have 2.1). Presumably these are full cleaned 35mm shots and not just rotoscoped elements from them? The color in grindhouse is of course very off. Are you adjusting by hand or using Dre’s tool perhaps?

Curious for the sake of the Battle of Hoth. It would be a ton of rotoscoping. But also a ton of cleanup/color work.

Thanks for the info. I didnt know that. Im pretty new to this fan preservation thing and Im still reading posts and gathering intel on the subject. Im guessing they didnt use the 35mm audio because its from a Spanish version. Also, what format is the LD audio track?

I believe it’s ac3 in this release. I’m just speculating, but yes, since it’s a Spanish print, and not GOUT synced, their film sourced audio would have needed to be re-synced, which is a bit of work.

If only Harmy could send you the lossless files so you could erase them. Every time you watch that scene, you could feel a burst of pride in having fixed the most important moment in the trilogy. 😉

I’ve been obsessed with this change for nearly 20 years. When I first saw the Special Edition of Jedi I couldn’t wait to see this moment on the big screen. Imagine my dismay when I saw that the scene had been ruined and the vanishing TIE fighters “fixed”! I stood up in the middle of the theatre and screamed, “that’s bullshit!” and I threw my popcorn on the floor, and walked out; I even made sure to throw my soda at the screen before storming out of the theatre. I also demanded my money back at the front box office. They just ignored me though and told my mother that she needed to control her young.

It sounds like the movie really freaked your mind.

I can’t help with the setup stuff, since I’m pretty clueless when it comes to audio gear (and certainly when it comes to actual theater equipment). But in case you don’t know, the current release uses the laserdisc audio (which isn’t entirely accurate to 1977), but the next release will have mono and stereo soundtracks derived directly from prints.

Star Wars Custom Blu Ray Saga Set (a WIP)

As I said I would, I’m posting a sample of my WIP of the Mos Eisley entry scene. It’s tricky as hell for some shots, and not terrible for others.

Alright, so I’ve gone and expanded on this for some reason. So, let me know if I’m polluting your thread, I just didn’t want to start a new thread about “correcting” anything of Harmy’s, since people will get offended on his behalf. And it’s somewhat on topic here!

I always assumed that Harmy’s 1997 Respecialized had the exact same color timing as 2.5, aside perhaps from the CGI SE scenes. He was, after all, still emulating the IB Tech look, and never said much about improving the color. But he recently pointed out that, even so, he did refine the color timing a bit. Some shots are still too green/yellow for my taste. But others are improved quite a lot. The luma curve is better all around.

So, using that source for some of the not specialized shots, I went about trying to re-color Despecialized 2.5 using a combination of Harmy’s versions and manually adjusting the color. If anyone wants to take a look, or even provide feedback, I’ve made a comparison video of part of the film, temporarily hosted here: http://we.tl/uJCZ7liTee

Some of the shots are greatly improved, in my biased opinion. Others need work, and a couple others I think I’ve mucked up. 😃

Edit: Nevermind. That Harmy is a crowd pleaser. 😃 I remember thinking a lot of the little things people were nitpicking about in the 2.0 WP were just annoying Harmy and he was only worrying about the major ones. Then I saw the 2.5 WP and thought ‘holy crap, he paid attention to like all of it.’

Sigh. Okay, “perfect” is maybe a bit of hyperbole, but the colours here are miles better than the Blu-ray, and I find the colours in Harmy’s version to be very unnatural looking.

I think there are portions with pretty big color problems in both projects, and portions of both that look great. The most natural and consistent color timing in fan preservations, in my opinion, are Harmy 1.0 and DJ’s V3. But those aren’t perfect, either. The former could be said to be too close to the blu-ray, and the latter very saturated.

I like how much of the SSE looks, but a lot of the darker interior shots could use a lot of work. Bottom line is that it’s a damn hard film to get looking perfect.

Of course I wouldn’t mind if Harmy, maybe he already has?, of the 1981 re-release with the EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE added to the crawl.

No. This is beyond the scope of Despecialized Edition. This has been asked of Harmy repeatedly, and this is the answer he and everyone helping him always gives. Someone else needs to do it. Case in point: Laserschwert, not Harmy, converted the title cards and the entire crawl to reflect the original “Krieg der Sterne” German release.

Yep. And if someone wants to do that, but doesn’t have the software (or desire/skill) to tweak the blu-ray shot appropriately, they can simply lop off the crawl from Harmy’s 1997 Respecialized and replace the 2.5 crawl. A simple fix that anyone making the request can pull off.

edit: walked away before submitting this and got beaten to the punch. 😃 I know you discussed it in another thread, DarthLucas, but the difference between 81 and later is just the starfield itself, right? Timing is the same?

Yeah, I will definitely do some workprints for v3.0s - starting from scratch, there will be a large probability of errors.

We’ll see about v2.6 - if I did one, it would be just quickly splicing TN1’s shots in place of GOUT shots into the v2.5 lossless master and maybe fixing some of the more obvious color problems (it would probably end up looking somewhat like the Respecialized Edition).

Maybe consider replacing your animated Dewback by the cantina, you did a good job on it, but it does stick out a bit as not 100% authentic. That and the pink haze in the blue sky around some of your other fixes, like the Dewback mounted Stormtrooper.

Harmy’s rotoscoping has gotten better in recent years. But I still find it very impressive how well the un-extended corridor looks, considering how much camera movement there is and, surely, gateweave present on any non-specialized source (GOUT/35mm).

I think the whole Mos Eisley entrance scene will be a stunning improvement in 3.0. He did a good job before, but the (I think) lower quality scans didn’t really pair with the BD in some cases.
