4k77 - shot by shot color grading (a WIP)

I find it really funny that now all main color sources for tantive iv are all primary colors (Revenge of The Sith = Red, Special Edition 2011 Episode 4 = Blue, Dr. Dre 4k77 color grade = Green)

The current color grading is meant to approximate the look of a projected technicolor print, and thus has somewhat of a green cast as technicolor prints do.

However, I do believe there was an error, or mishap, and too much Green Cast is present in the current 4k77, if you look at the current discussion on the Other forum.

I don’t believe there was an error or mishap.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

“Reels one and four are EastmanColor, Reels two, three, four and seven are LPP Low Fade. Reel six is FujiColor and is showing the first stages of vinegar syndrome, but the other six reels seem to be okay. All pictures are captured frames from the actual print with no touch up. The two EastmanColor reels have turned warm, but there is still some color. All pictures are captured frames from the actual print with no touch up or color correction, so check them carefully to judge the condition of the film.”

Well, don’t spend too much on it. There have been other prints scanned already (one of which was used in Despecialized 2.5). I’m not 100% sure this would be useful. The fading of the non LPP reels doesn’t seem too extreme yet (if those images are really untouched), but given that unfaded prints have been scanned, I’m not sure it’s worth the trouble. If you want it for your own personal collection, keep in mind that three of the reels will fade to red. And one of them is going to eventually be destroyed completely and should not be kept with the others.

Yes, the OP is asking for feedback. But none of what you’re saying seems to have a basis in reality. the hue shifts you keep vaguely referring to as problems don’t seem to be anything properly defined, but rather just color corrections that you don’t prefer.

There’s nothing to support the points that you keep suggesting. If It’s only your preference, that is fine. There’s a bit of subjectivity in this kind of thing. But generally you’ll notice color correctors going back and forth on small nuances like mint walls, subtle details about skin tone, etc. The previews you’ve made are the darkest renders that I think have been seen . There’s not much to say about the color except that it looks like the blu-ray.

I don’t want to be mean. Learning color correction tools is difficult and fun. But the idea of dismissing the extremely finely tuned work here to discuss the merits of a dark and magenta render, when there is nothing of substance to discuss, is kind of derailing.

edit: I may be mixing some of this up with Dre’s thread, but obviously this is happening there as well.

Is the omnibus an all new edit or a remastering? I seem to recall there being one before. My local PBS station would run an entire story in one afternoon when I was a kid.

And thanks for the heads up! Hopefully this won’t be scuttled for a technical snafu like the screening of the animated Power Of The Daleks I attended.

On disc, the omnibus versions are always direct preservations of the broadcast tapes. And yes this is an old edit. But for the theatrical showing they’re in the process of reconforming the edit using the newly restored video and 5.1 mix.

Yes, there are some projects that are anal retentive to put it mildly. But I don’t think anybody here thinks the current Star Wars Blu-Rays look anything like film these days. Even Phantom Menace is a plasticized wax-work mess now.

Yeah, I’m not really commenting on SW. Especially the first four. That said, I’ve moved away from the idea that fan edits can ever actually replace the films sufficiently (except Frinks). But they’re a great novelty.

Many BD releases have gotten good video/audio reviews, like Jurassic Park, 007 films, Back to the Future etc. but on this forum people have had a different opinion as they have older releases and possibly even original audio tracks or film reels to make their point.

I’m just going to be completely honest with you, and some people here may get pissed off at me, but most people on here just generally aren’t the experts that they think they are, and that’s putting it extremely politely.

Damn straight.

Yeah. For a while, I also got sucked into the mentality here that most films apparently do not exist in any watchable state.

Many releases certainly have had room for improvement. But, except for films that have been torn limb from limb, like Lucas’s, I now think It’s perfectly fine to watch a release that might be imperfect, rather than a fan version from 35mm or laserdisc or with all color grading removed.

I still respect all of there wonderful and crazy projects here, so this is more of a personal thing. If it gets to the point where you can’t sit down and enjoy a film if the restoration is only 95% ideal, trying to fix every film, as an amatuer, is probably not the way forward. And you’re likely to introduce more problems than fixes, IMO.

Still, no reason not to push for better releases. I think The Matrix is looking better. Blade Runner Final Cut has some improved color now. Apparently the new Terminator 2 release falls short. Etc. And obviously some releases, occasionally, are indeed train wrecks.

I’ve tried to get the 4K version running on MPC-HC with madVR, but whatever I do, I get really choppy playback. Any pointers, or should I just download the 1080p version?

I’ve got a new 4K TV I’d love to play this on, and although it’s being said there is little difference between the two, I’d love to watch it in its native resolution.

What are your computer specs?

Windows 8.1
CPU: Intel 8-core i7-4710HQ @ 2.50 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M
HDD: 1TB HGST HTS721010A9E630
RAM: 12 GB

It is a laptop, as well. Is it my GPU?

I believe so. I don’t think it supports hardware accelerated HEVC playback.

I clearly don’t remember the theatrical look (oh wait I never saw it in theaters) but when the article says “less green” shouldn’t it say “no green?” I see no green in those pictures at all. Of course you can’t trust pictures like that, it might just be my monitor’s fault. Regardless I think color issues are way overblown, people are always trying to “fix” stuff here that doesn’t need fixing, and basically meh.

There’s still green in the new Matrix images I’ve seen.

I agree with you that sometimes, especially here, color issues can be overstated. And there have been a lot of projects here that seem to want to do away with the idea of grading itself, wanting everything to look as it might in real life. But the Matrix Bluray grading was really really over the top green. From what I’ve seen, the new images look like a nice improvement.

I wish they’d kept the old logo. Same goes for Big Finish. I mean, I like the new logo, sure, but the old logo is simply a perfection of logo design. Seriously, there’s no way you can top the early 70s/96 logo.

I can see the desire for unified branding. And I think it looks quite nice on the new UK Collection packaging. A bit overstated on the old and US versions.

For Big Finish, the good news is ditching the side column style and the big waste of space there.

I respect you position and your thoughtful response Towne, but it keeps happening.

I have no issues with noobs asking questions but there should be penalties for rudeness to keep the forum conversations respectful. Zero tolerance I say.

It’s not necessarily my position, but the forum’s position is definitely not zero tolerance at the moment. That said, I have seen new members turn things around after a thoughtful/informative reply. Otherwise, they just become more irrational and inflammatory in response to kindness, and then they’re banned for sure. Seems like a logical way of dealing with things.

What’s the point of color correction if millions of fans don’t know how to download your releases?
So hard to upload on an outdoor torrent tracker and cloud storage?

Can someone ban this guy?

I think there’s a new approach here of not being harsh/terrible to new members, even when they are rude and misinformed in their first few posts. Some might still end up banned, but giving them a chance has proven effective from what I’ve seen.

Not sure if that’s still going on or not. But there were a few people here with much more patience than me that were undertaking the responsibility of gently and politely telling people why we do things the way we do, and pointing them in the right direction.

Here’s my best effort: there is a reason for the methods we use. These projects often take members here hundreds of hours, so they can be a bit touchy when a new person barges in with demands. These things are out there in public and people here can be extremely helpful when asked politely. Once you acquire the files, you are (in most cases) more than welcome to start up a public torrent or file locker upload (you are NOT permitted to post links to those things openly in this forum).

These things are not the responsibilities of the content creators, so please don’t act in an ungrateful way toward said creators. They don’t even need to share these things with the community at all, let alone the outside world.
