(Whoops. That was supposed to be an edit of the post, but I hit quote by mistake.)

Yeah, the main shots that you would be adjusting then would be the shots that are purely model based, in or above the trench. And one concern there would be taking green away from the lasers.

Anyway, whatever the ‘right’ vs. ‘wrong’ color debate may suggest, I understand where you’re coming from appreciating the greyer values, having grown up with the grey Death Star on VHS and in plenty of video games.

Well, the anomaly is there on the blu-ray. But the curve adjustments do bring it out. It’s probably especially well hidden on the blu-ray because it’s so damn dark. 😃

Either way, nice work Dre.

I’m giving the entire battle of Yavin another pass. Not going to release it as 2.6 related anything, because the goal of that was really not to stray too far from Harmy’s look. But DL’s consistent (though very grey) look is nice, so I’m shooting for something similar just to see how it goes.

Team Negative1's Silver Screen Edition with Puggo 16mm audio
Time

Perhaps the easiest way to do this would be to use a video editor (Adobe, DaVinci, etc) and synchronize the TN1 video to the Puggo video. Inserting black frames or duplicate frames or whatever other tricks you want to try to pull, as needed.

Put the two video tracks into different layers. You can minimize the puggo one and put it in the corner or something. Get the first “Star Wars” frame to occur at the same frame timing as the first “Star Wars” frame of puggo. And then continue on through the film, finding the next time that the first frame of a shot no longer matches up. And then fix it. Export your video and mux it with the puggo audio.

The alternative would be to do similar alignment, but bringing Puggo to sync with TN1, instead of the other way around, making sure that the audio is cut when the video is cut. And then applying crossfades or whatever you need to do to make it sound okay. Then, export the audio. I’m not familiar enough with puggo’s 16mm to know what it is missing, etc, though.

Either way, the point is that you have the Puggo audio synched to the Puggo video, so the trick is to synchronize based on the two video tracks you have because it can be done precisely that way.

now that I have proper 35mm scans at my disposal, I can finally replace all those rotoscoped shots with the 100% real original shots in SW and ESB as well, so they also can have the same very high standard of what passes muster as ROTJ already does.

The few people who aren’t into that technique will always have older versions to fall back on. But I’m very excited for this.

There are ads on myspleen.org? I switched off adblock just to be sure but still I can see just the login form on all browsers. Are you sure you don’t have a virus? That Flash player update thing is very suspicious.

Definitely suspicious. Myspleen is a pretty bare bones site and should never do anything like that.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi — The 'Ziggy' Edit (Released)

I agree with darthrush’s assessment. I would have also maybe removed a little bit less of Han’s lines. And I think there were some other 2011 things floating around like the Sebulba guy that I would have removed.

But those are minor points, whereas the other ones are kind of experience-breaking, honestly. Beaten up, unrestored scenes are one thing when they’re put back into a rough extended cut just to see how it would play out. But, personally, I don’t want them in a polished cut unless they’re restored.

Harmy wasn’t claiming them to be recomposited. They are recomposited. https://picasaweb.google.com/102542760950977079734/JediSpecialEditionChangesHD#5529747174708314994

it does appear to me that he put less work/effort into ROTJ and had a lesser standard for what passes muster than he did with SW and ESB.

You’re entitled to your opinion of course. But this suggests to me that you’re not familiar with the work involved in cleaning up 35mm film, or the state of the raw scans.

These types of edits will never be perfect. Different techniques pop out for different people. Personally, I find a very low res Sarlacc with its own gateweave pops right out of an otherwise HDTV shot (no offense, Harmy) more so than a slight change in contrast. If you think 1.0 is seamless and 2.5 is low-effort, then perhaps you’re just much more sensitive to that type of change, or perhaps your standards have changed quite a lot since you watched 1.0.

Sorry, I’m going to stop discussing this so the thread can get on with what it’s here for.

It’s in quotes in other people’s posts, so it’s not like you’ve functionally censored anything.

I agree with Frink about the principle of post editing/censorship, but I think you’ll find that he cares about it far more than the mods seem to. I’m not sure who the banned culprit was, but maybe they tried to delete their entire history or something.

I really like the majority of the shots!

But yes, I do sometimes see that effect. What you should do is have your project set to 1280x540 or whatever, and then render at 1280x720 to add the bars. However, often times those bars changing colors should be an indicator that your black levels might be a bit off. I noticed that in a few of your earlier samples (the Mos Eisley matte painting for example) but haven’t looked at your new ones closely yet!

edit: this is an example of the blacks being blue: http://i.imgur.com/aeMZP5y.png

It’s interesting that you seem to have taken the Tusken/Ben scene closer to Harmy’s 2.5. Is that because you used his as a basis (I used the 97SE as I think it had better color dynamics) or did you essentially revert it using mine as the base?

I like the color scheme you’re going for with the force choke scene, and the other scenes in that room. The blacks might be crushed, but I’m not comparing it to another version right now so I’m not entirely sure.

http://i.imgur.com/mBasrCE.png Kind of wish you used mine here, but we’ve already discussed this. 😛

http://i.imgur.com/n4Q4fCl.png This is a tough shot and you did a good job.

http://i.imgur.com/jFPewj7.png This looks pretty good. I struggled a bunch with that scene. Considered going back to the blu-ray as a starting point.

http://i.imgur.com/bczf7wR.png Something is wrong here. The black bars are red and so are the shadows.

http://i.imgur.com/AnKI3QF.png nice!

The battle of Yavin looks really nice and consistent. Did you use my version as a basis for the whole film from that point on?

@amatin I think that RoTJ 2.5 is by far the best release from Harmy yet. I find the whole 35mm shots to be vastly superior to some of the mixed-source rotoscoped shots in the other releases. Though part of that may be due to his ever increasing skill and sources, since the rotoscoped parts of Jedi 2.5 look fantastic. But this thread really isn’t for general reviews and preferences. It’s for pointing out actual errors.

Whether or not you like the release, I think it’s rather insulting to suggest that he gave it the short… shrift? It implies that he didn’t put a shit ton of effort into this release to make it look as best he could.

I wasn’t planning on it originally, but I knew it would bother me if I didn’t, so I regraded the entirety of the Battle of Yavin sequence to drastically reduce the over-cyan tint on Despecialized. I love the tech colors, until they start to be distracting and take me out of the film, which those overemphasized cyans in the climax of the film definitely do. A few of these shots were regraded using videos posted by Mike Verta as reference, and surrounding footage was graded to match. Most of it is nothing crazy, just reducing the cyan color shift and making the image look more natural.

Cool. I considered doing similar but realized I could end up introducing more problems than I solved. So I went with using a lot of 97 ReSp shots which were a little more neutral, but not totally there. And then the most saturated were some of the ones taken care of by the SSE. But there’s definitely more that could be done, so I’ll be happy to see yours.

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)

Dreamaster: If you dig through Harmy’s ESB thread, circa July 2014, you’ll find near endless discussion about what you’re talking about (you can also find some really fascinating opinions we all had about slightly rounded corners in film). But Harmy summed it up here pretty well. VHS/LD aren’t perfect and neither are people’s memories, and those are probably strongly biased by VHS/LD. ESB fares worst of the three because we don’t have a fade-free theatrical print.

its just a simple question. why would you call me drunk?

You’re just posting the same question all over the place and repeatedly.

To answer your question: this release just came out and was a complete surprise to everyone. There is no cover out there to download.

I see you’ve found the right section of the forum for this question and you started a thread there. Good. There are talented cover makers over there. Now all you need to do is not bump the thread constantly and be patient. People are already seeing what you’ve posted, and continuing to post ‘anyone?’ comments isn’t going to help anything. If enough time passes that your thread falls back to the second or third page of threads, you can of course feel free to bump it I’m sure.
