Ughhhhh. It’s so damn frustrating. Just look at the readme for this release and see how damn awesome Williarob is. And how much work he put into this. He even ignored Negative1’s idiotic fear of BD50s (presumably just because he can’t figure out how to burn them himself). Just to have it shat on by Negative 1.

That’s unfounded. Negative1 didn’t ask for it to be removed, Rogue1 did.

How fucking perplexing is it that he works “under” such a terrible, awful (ex) member of the community like Negative1.

Again, I have never heard the ex-TN1 members say that Negative1 is a bad guy - not Rob or any of the others.

I wouldn’t get too worked up, I have the torrent downloading and someone is bound to put it up on Blu (if it’s not already there).

I have it downloading as well, it is not about that.

Are you suggesting that Rogue1 is not Negative1? edit: re-reading it, you do seem to be implying that. Whether you’re aware or not, it is the same person.

The person who asked for it to be removed (or rather, for the previous huge batch of deletions) is the former member known as negative1. The individual who lied about leaving the group, and the sole user of the team negative 1 OT account.

Negative1 lacks technical skill and knowledge, anything resembling leadership ability, behavioral stability, and common decency/morality. If the rest of the team still exists, please, consider that it should be common sense that you throw out Negative1. If you need a leader, Rob should be your guy.

Rob. You did this version. Can’t you just contact the spleen and tell them you approve it? Negative1 has directly stated that he is not in Team Negative 1. How can myspleen possibly listen to him about the matter?

Are people still planning on burning this edit on blu-ray when it is completed? I know when ANH Revisited came out back in 2007 that the big thing was dual layer dvds. I have been making the shift to digital over the past few months and I plan on going with a digital copy of this. Where does everyone else stand?

I like burning some of the better / more important fan-edits to blu-ray. Nice to have a menu and easy compatibility for sharing with others. And it serves as a great backup copy as well. The video and audio streams are exactly what I would have in an MKV version. So if anything should happen to a harddrive with the fanedit, I can just mux a perfectly fine version from disc and not re-encode anything. The same couldn’t really be said for the DVD generation and their crappy MPEG2 compression.

It’s a bit early to be sure that BD-Rs won’t start deteriorating. But I think they’re believed to be better, as far as long term stability, than DVD-R. I remember reading quite a bit about how lousy and short lifespanned that medium was supposed to be. And poor reflectivity of the discs, poor compatibility with the DL discs, etc.

Maybe it would make sense to do 1 and 3. And then an optional special features disc for people who went with option 1 because they have issues with BD50s.

edit: I think I was confused about the difference between options 1 and 2. The non-DTS audio tracks, though numerous, are quite small. I would just have a BD25 with audio/video that is the untranscoded version from 2.7, and maybe a second BD25 with special features. As another option, a BD50 that combines it all together.

It’s not quite the scale of a scanner darkly about half, and again I’m well aware of the massive undertaking.

The issue, aside from the 15 years of rotoscoping, is that I’m not sure any of it makes sense as far as why you would rotoscope it. You keep alluding to combining the best things together and getting the most out of it, but I’m not sure that there is a reason for any of this work to be done. And you’ve suggested using the SSE. As great as it is to have that release, and despite the fact that I used it myself in 2.7, it is a relatively low quality scan. Certainly not worth the weird massive undertaking you’re describing. Better scans have already been done and, though they don’t have planned release dates, they would surely be available before you complete several minutes of the… thing… you are describing.

I don’t mean to discourage you in general. It’s nice to have people who are motivated to help with these films. But there is always a balance between the amount of work required and the payoff. Before deciding to undertake any large scale project in life/hobbies/business/, it is necessary to plan and understand the benefits and risks. Your project sounds like years and years worth of work, but without any reason at all for any of it to be done. I don’t think you understand what you are talking about.

Rotoscoping is an enormous, time consuming task. Harmy’s work is so well regarded largely because of all the time and energy he has spent rotoscoping a number of the despecialized shots.

What you’re suggesting is rotoscoping the elements of the entire film, including elements that were not changed. Compared to Harmy’s work, that is more on the scale of producing “A Scanner Darkly” or any pre-CAPS animated Disney Blu-ray. I don’t think I understand what the benefits you’re suggesting are, but I think you are probably incorrect about them. It would be the most work ever put into a fan restoration project, and would not have a particular purpose as far as I can tell (but I am no expert). Furthermore, we would undoubtedly introduce changes in reconstructing all these layers, just as Disney does to every animation they re-rotoscope.

I agree that video quality is more important than bonus features.

I haven’t looked at all the discs yet, but I think the solution should depends on how much space the bonus material takes up. If it could be 3x feature BD25s and 1x bonus disc, that sounds good to me. If it would be 3x bonus discs, I think it would be a much better decision to use 3x BD50s than have a 6-disc set.
