Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)

Okay here are some comparisons against Harmy's version:

http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/106388

There are plenty more differences than just that, here's some of what I noticed: All the optical wipes are different in the SE and also Harmys. All the re-compositing is different because Harmy's is primarily based on the SE; and this includes scenes where the ships etc are partially transparant (over plants, over other spaceships, over the clouds in cloud city and of course over the snow on Hoth), Harmy partially restored this on Hoth but not in other areas of the film. The matte-lines are visible and hard, and in some cases the original models had been replaced in later versions of the film. The placement of compositing can differ to later versions also. And finally, all scenes that have special effects or optical wipes have additional layers of film grain - as you would expect.

I guess we should have put some kind of smiley face or sarcasm tag on it. Of course George Lucas approves. He's the one that released it in that manner.

Team Negative1

More important than that, the director of the film the late Irvin Kershner would approve.

It's amazing how many tiny changes they made to the film. Things that they probably would have gotten away with, with little protest, if it weren't for Lucas's need for bigger, bolder, stupider alterations.

In all honesty I had a great deal of trouble running the 1080p release myself. Didn't work on my mpc-hc player, had to use vlc and even then it was incredibly slow jumping from place to place in the film. First time i've experienced such issues with an encode.

As for the film itself, the extra details in the shadows and highlights is very nice, really puts the blu-ray to shame in that regard, but the red fade is very noticable, a lot of work is going to have to be done to try to retrieve the original colours and bring them into balance. I don't envy team_negative1 all that work, that's for sure.

I think they've said that they have 1+ Fuji prints that will probably be the source of the final restored version. I imagine this print we've all viewed now could still be useful for damaged portions, etc.

Yes.

I can't imagine that would be a very pleasurable experience - don't folks like to get immersed in movies any more?

If the PC is set up properly and connected to a big TV screen or projector, the experience is just as immersive and pleasurable – at least to me.

Yes. Very happy with my decision to make sure my current PC had an HDMI out port. Useful for these kinds of things, out-of-region DVDs, etc.

No Episode 7 without OOT being available

Not really.

First of all, I think there's a good chance they will release it. If they don't, it will likely be due to the fact that they're unable to, rather than unwilling.

But even if Disney makes the decision to never release the unaltered trilogy, it has nothing to do with the people making VII, and it remains separate from my desire to see the new film. So far, I'm interested. That may change over the next year, who knows.

I'm not sure if you're proposing an actual boycott. The film is going to be massively successful, financially, either way. I can understand not buying a 'complete' blu ray set that includes the Special Editions, though. If you're interested in boycotts, I recall a very silly thread where people proposed buying and returning blu rays. Worth reading for a laugh.

Is there any chance it could be uploaded to a different tracker? Yesterday it didn't move a bit and now I get a weird error message - "Trying to seed yourself?" - WTF?

Hope you get it working. There are 70+ seeders so you should be able to get it at whatever your max speed is (7 MB/s was fine). I used qbtorrent as well. Perhaps firewall/port problems are to blame.

C'mon, now my whole project is RUINED! Lol. Can easily replace Redux with some other adjective. At the rate things are going, this is essentially going to be vaporware with the exception of the approximately 3 people who have seen it. Still haven't gotten around to having someone do disk and cover art. :(

 :(

Still very much looking forward to it. Hopefully you can recruit an artist.

The Empire Strikes Back is now on myspleen.

Return of the Jedi should be coming in the next few days, then i'll create playable AVCHD versions of all three with chapters and selectible subtitles for those that want to write these onto a dvd-9 and watch these releases straight off their players with as little fuss as possible.

Sounds great. And then the 16 gb 'retro' versions?

True. I think I read comments too often and expect too much out of people. :-/

Whenever DeEds, or OUT in general is mentioned outside of this community, you have:

Also, assuming you are talking about the comments on yahoo, you're pretty much looking at the bottom of the intelligence barrel on the internet, aside from Fox News comment sections.

@_,,,^..^,,,_ : I've had a look at all three versions of Star Wars and yes I was right, the retro release is the one that looks most similar to your screencaps.

@Octorox: There is a blanket green tint over ROTS, its pretty subtle though so i'm not surprised that most don't notice it. Annoyingly it seems that imageshack has deleted all my comparison shots, i'll see whether I have the ROTS ones still lying around on my harddisk still.

Do you know if that green tint was there in the theatrical version? If it's slight, that may be a hard thing to figure out. Wonder if there were DVD screening copies floating around back then.

There is a 35mm print of ROTS up for sale at the moment if you want to know for sure :)

Personally, I think I would be okay dying mildly curious about that. :P

But I hope a generous person does end up buying it.

Yeah, I guess the consistency isn't 100% but I'd say it's good enough now.

Oh, BTW, I got a green light from Team Negative 1 to say that the 35mm scans come from them. So, thanks Team Negative 1 - without you, the quality of this edit would be much lower, because those shots were the most obvious despecializations in there :-)

 Aaah.

Not only does this ruin my poita theory, but it ruins the old theories that Ream -1 doesn't really have any prints, they're making it all up.

Excellent!

But wasn't that nonsense disproven when Harmy used their Mos Eisley sequence in Star Wars?

Unless people were suggesting that they had 35mm copies of the first film and were faking the rest? Also, can you imagine the amount of work they would have to put into adding digital damage to the blu-rays for all their previews? Hah. Sorry for off topic (though it's slightly on topic in that Harmy makes great early use of -1's material).

I think he expressed interest in using that site in the future. Even if he doesn't, I'll be happy to re-host myself, or someone else can. But I won't be grabbing every version of every title. And I don't have the prequels.

I agree that the upload sites disagree with my internet. But I managed to get his V1s after a little bit of persistence.
