Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

Finally got around to watching the '77 Blu-ray all the way through. As everyone has said, it's really impressive and almost impossible seeming that this came from the GOUT. Watched it on a 720p TV via PS4 and it looked better than many DVDs do. Colors looked really great. I know people will always quibble about 'proper color'. I don't know how anything looked in '77. But as someone who grew up with VHS, LD, and broadcasts in the 80's and 90's, this looks fantastic.

Really the best 'true' presentation of Star Wars '77 as opposed to the reconstructed options. Next on the list is the '97 disc.

Hoping to add the theatrical and '97 ESB/RoTJ discs to the collection some day. Thanks for this.

kk650's Star Wars Saga: Regraded and Semi-Specialized (Released)

I'd also like to see what materialises in terms of 4k remastered releases of the SE original trilogy/unaltered original trilogy this year so I have a better idea of what sources are available and whether these Semi Specialised Editions should be redone using those improved 4k sources.

It would be great. Obviously, first and foremost just to have the OOT would be amazing. But for anyone wanting to make a semi-specialized, the process would become very straight forward. We would probably end up seeing a ton, with everyone's slight preferences depicted (as with Superman II, for instance).

Okay, good news guys, after many hours and much testing I think i've finally found the right settings to use for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi Semi-Specialised Editions! :D

With my previous Semi-Specialised release of Empire Strikes Back I used very similar settings to what I used with Star Wars and in hindsight I realise that that was a mistake, Empire Strikes Back is a totally different animal colourwise to Star Wars and Return of the Jedi, blues play a more important part in the colour scheme than with the other two films.

This latest Empire Strikes Back Semi-Specialised Edition V2.2 will be noticably different from my V2.1 retro release, with the blues being more prominent throughout the film, as I am pretty sure they were in the theatrical release.

This weekend i'll be releasing a 20-21GB release of The Phantom Menace with grain added to counter the extreme DNR of the blu-ray and make the transfer far more filmlike and enjoyable to watch. It'll also include the DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 track.

@Jackpumpkinhead: I've replied to you on tehparadox. I should have AOTC up by tomorrow, i'll send you a PM there when its available.

 Hey KK,

I'm familiar with your Episode I version with grain added back. I think it's very useful for distracting the viewer from the DVNR plastic. But are you also adjusting the color on this version or is this your old release?

@towne32: I'll give it a try for the V1.1 - and also for the other projects, too! Thanks for the input!

It's not necessarily something you need to do for your releases if they're not problematic. I haven't personally done anything with BD-RB that didn't involve a re-encode, but presumably it's smart enough not to when the files will fit. (unless you mean use it to keep the retail menus/extras, in which case I can look for the instructions I found).

I've burnt most of your other releases, and they all work fine on standalone players and with powerdvd. So I'm not sure you need to change your standard method. Escape is still sitting on my hdd, since you mentioned an update on the way. Not sure what's up with it.

BD Rebuilder will solve it.

Reading this description, I am not sure how ?

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/BD-Rebuilder

Although it's main purpose is to shrink BD50s, it can fix errors in BD files/structure. I know, for instance, people replace M2ts files from a blu ray (to keep the menu, but replace feature with an edit) and then run it through BD-RB and it patches things up, resulting in a working disc.

FYI the error I've gotten on the 3 discs I've tried so far on the PS3 is error 80029941 (then I'm forced to cancel with no playback).

I may be mistaken, but isn't that a faulty disc/drive error?

Might it be that your episode IV and V discs were burned to dvd5 and VI is on a dual layer disc? Have you had dual layer discs from this manufacturer work on your PS3?

Do the Star Wars movies contain evidence that Lucas makes it up as he goes?

That he can sit there and state all those lies with a straight face is insulting. That he thinks no one will challenge him or bother reading the original screenplays or 1977 interviews shows how colossal his ego really is.

You'll get no argument from me, as I've lost count of the number of times I've heard him claim to have either planned or written everything in advance.  He's also stated repeatedly that Mace Windu was the first character he developed for Star Wars, although he wasn't able to find an appropriate actor for the part until Samuel L. Jackson was cast.

My question is to Lucas is, "If you created the character of Mace Windu first, why not use him in the Obi-Wan role for A New Hope?  There were any number of African American actors who could have played Windu's part effectively (Paul Winfield comes to mind, as Jackson's career was in its infancy).  Count me among those who isn't sorry Lucas is no longer calling the shots where these films are concerned.

People believe it, though. And it probably has worked to his advantage.

Just look at how many people have become enraged this last week after hearing that we may not be getting the version of VII that George envisioned so many years ago. His holy, untouchable scripture has been thrown out in favor of "fan fiction".

Hey guys, you should really work on improving Vader's eyebrows. Excellent work, that's the one part that reminds me I'm watching a fan preservation. So, remember, eyebrows. ;)

The winky face in your message reminded me of what eyebrows do when you wink: they move. And that Harmy should really be putting in about 30-70 hours a week on eyebrow improvements alone.

Can we see what we can do about getting the eyebrows at 4K, possibly even 8K? The rest of the frame is fine at 720p, but let's please try to amp up the eyebrows. I think they should probably be in 3D as well.

(back in reality, negative1 said they sent Harmy the 35mm eyebrow frames recently)

It only plays in BD players, if I'm not mistaken...

Depends what he downloaded. But yes, no need to waste more discs if it means attempting AVHCD discs in standard DVD players.

Either way, it shouldn't be burning the .iso file to the disc as a file.

If "write image to disc" really was the method used (and not files/folders), I don't know why that would happen.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * <strong>SPOILER THREAD</strong> *
Time

It has been clarified by the artist that these are not concept drawings, but drawings based on VII. Professional fan art, basically. The way he phrased it suggests that he has produced art based on more than just the trailer we've seen, but that obviously we're not going to see that art at this point as that material is still confidential.

If this article is anything to go by:

http://www.cinemablend.com/m/new/How-George-Lucas-Star-Wars-7-Ideas-Were-Used-By-Disney-69271.html

 What?

If they don't care about Lucas's treatments, no way they're going to care about his special editions.

There's a huge difference between an unused script and a thing the public saw.

The OOT is also a thing that the public saw.

Yep. This news about the script treatment confirms what that Disney is more interested in making proper decisions than appeasing George's personal wishes. Unless there really are technical hurdles making it unrealistic, I don't see why they wouldn't go the route of Blade Runner and Close Encounters and release an 'ultimate' set with all versions.

Just about to sit down and watch. :)

BTW, kk650, I think I read you're planning on redoing your episode 1 regrade. Are you intending to color correct this time, or use the broadcast as your source? If you do choose the broadcast, I would like to request that you replace the Yoda scenes with the ones from the blu. I much prefer the cgi version - but I know that depends on your personal preference, of course.

Is the broadcast missing the edges of the frame like the DVD?

An interesting first post on your first day registered.

You are presumably asking for a preservation, given the forum you've posted in. I've made a screencap of the kickstarter* so it is now preserved for history's sake.

*Good luck to you or your friend in spamming other websites, though. Have you considered "Chadical" for your next account?

If I remember correctly, Vader has been used as a placeholder for multiple pieces of concept art.

 This.

There's also been rumors of a flashback scene

 Much to everyone's dread.

I'd be concerned that a flashback scene might suck, but I don't think I'm going to lose any sleep about them 'not belonging' in SW storytelling. It's not unreasonable that flashbacks would first show their heads after a 30 year gap in the story.

If it's easier to upload to vimeo, I can try to download it before it gets blocked and put it on the spleen.

How is the quality on vimeo?  If it is good, maybe we should do it that way.  I don't know what the window is before it gets taken down.

Or how about this:http://www.dropsend.com/

If it really works up to 8 GB, I could try to send you the dual-layer version if I had your email.

Given that the premiere of that Rebels show has been up on vimeo since October, in HD, perhaps things slip by rather easily.

I've grabbed it from spleen. Looking forward to watching!

The reason for all of the Disney is that I'm planning a quick DVD recorder (Panasonic DMR-ES10) project for my son. He'll be 1 in April and will probably be interested in Disney in the near future, so I want to be prepared.

I call it "The Disney 30 in 40: 1937-1977". I'll be preserving the best LDs of Disney's first 30 films that—interestingly enough—were produced in their first 40 years of doing theatrical animated features.

I'll be preserving two alternate versions as well (The Lady and the Tramp fullscreen alternate version and Sleeping Beauty in P&S), so that makes it 32: a nice power of 2.

Wow, that sounds really great.

I recently found our great 'most acceptable version of Disney animations' thread and have made an attempt to get some of the good DVD versions, acceptable blu rays where they exist (or that I've come to terms with), and a few fan restorations.

I've only watched laserdiscs a handful of times in the early 90's. Collections like this make me tempted to start gathering them and a good player. But knowing me, it would be a slippery and possibly expensive slope.

Nice stuff!

That's like saying my four-year-old daughter would have made the prequels better.
