Star Wars GOUT in HD using super resolution algorithm (* unfinished project *)

Funny!  It got me reading the beginning pages of this and came across this one on page 3.

"Super Resolution only exists in papers of shortsighted academics who have a poor grasp on sampling theory."

At least he somewhat redeemed himself at the bottom of the same page.

That user at least has a lot of experience in trying to clean and upscale the GOUT, including an SR attempt, I believe. Though, IMO, the first guy redeems himself by having a Pink Floyd avatar as well. :)

no i just haven't around to posting the screenshot yet that's all.

That is not what we are talking about, and I think you know that.

Edit: Oh, he means "no, some good has *not* come of that, because I have not stopped". If he doesn't stop with the garbage posts, I'm up for actually campaigning for a ban. And I think dozens of others probably feel the same way. Especially once you figure in the Team Olie numbers. My mind is still somewhat blown from when he said he is 30 years old.

Cue the Luke "I Care" image.

Some would say not wanting to play along with the charade qualifies as caring.  If you do, then I care.  If you don't, then I don't.

EDIT: Sorry, I was responding to the original question "Who cares?"  As for the point, our failure to entertain the ruse will hardly slow this project down. Maybe I've had too many friends ask me to lie for them in the past. It's just not healthy for a community for people to ask that of them.

Are you saying the ruse is that negative1 is no longer a part of the project (I think virtually everyone is in agreement about that...), or that there is indeed mid-to-large size group working on this stuff, rather than just one guy? Aspects of their updates and progress do suggest to me that it's a team.

I'm kind of on the fence about caring about this. On the one hand, I think deception is unnecessary and strange. On the other hand, as far as I can tell it is 100% about privacy concerns and/or paranoia than a need to trick people. As people have pointed out, there is no real privacy when it comes to Disney/law/anyone who cares to really figure it out. But if it's only a silly motive, and not a malicious one, I don't quite see what's offensive about it. Most people would probably be dishonest to received credit for something they haven't done rather than exactly the opposite.

jedimasterobiwan, to answers to your cryptical requests:

Now seriously: you have finally found a member (actually, two) who would like to help you with all your requests, and you had the great idea to post more questions even there: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Project-Index-Other-Preservations-and-Fan-Projects/post/775676/#TopicPost775676 - while EVERYONE said to stop posting your requests EVERYWHERE...

Really, I don't know why you are still allowed to be a member here... because, I must admit, it was funny to read your nonsensical posts at the beginning - but now they are only annoying...

And I'm also sorry to have answered you again, as I promised to do not it again, but I was "forced"...

Farewell, so long, goodbye, adieu - and don't forget: punctuation is not your enemy!

I'm confused. Has he officially ignored Jerryshadoe's absurdly generous offer? I haven't seen him post since then and just figured they took the conversation to PM. I was finally willing to lighten up on the guy.

edit: removed unnecessary part. Andrea had the timing of this post confused.

Harmy's trilogy and Adywan's Ep1 are reconstructions of an approximation to the theatrical cut. They still contain considerable differences (especially the OT films). Branching from Ep1 Theatrical to the DVD version is possible, as there are less differences than in the OT where virtually all opticals were re-done for the 1997 SE.

I can give you an Avisynth script that enhances Althor's LD rip without losing the unique characteristics of the source (contrast, colour, etc). It's watchable and only slightly below DVD quality.

There will also be, at some point, DrDre's SuperResolution scripts. Either way, I definitely see the value of using actual OOT source if compiling BluRays with a goal of representing every real release of the film accurately. But I don't think that's the goal here (despite the fact that it's inching in that direction). In my opinion, though, Dre's script and maybe a little extra editing may result in something of good enough quality for a set like this.

As for episode 1, it seems to me that the best thing for him to do would be to wait for your reconstruction, and then he can cleanly branch from that/schorman04/2011, right?

The magenta push is gone, but the lights are still somewhat red. This is mostly fixed by correcting the luminance of the shot, which I have done separately throughout the film:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/133233

The boosted reds are also brought down somewhat, and the purple tint to the entire picture is brought to a warmer, more natural hue.

I'm correcting this film shot by shot, as there is sadly little consistency to the color problems. When I get to this one, I'll be reducing the saturation for sure.

Thanks. I was just browsing through the film with your LUT applied. It works very well. The film is a bit less washed out than age's correction, so I like it better, but people will probably prefer one or the other depending on their tastes. Though I haven't compared some of the darker scenes, or parts that the blu-ray is known to have crushed blacks.

The hanger shot does indeed remove much of the magenta. The engines of the CGI ships in flight are also much improved. One place where this LUT really excels over the older ones is the initial droids in desert scene. While not perfect, it has gone a long way to remove R2's strange pop-out blue color.

Is the LUT intended to be applied during the intro/title sequence as well?

BD25 or BD50? I think you may find yourself surprised at just how many changes there are between 1997 and 2004. A BD50 could fit the 97 separately, and a branching 04/11.

If you did try to do seamless branching between all 3, I think it would be a shame to use '97 as a base and reduce the quality of everything else. If you try to pull this off 2011 as a starting point would make the most sense.

For a quick and decent color correction, the user "age" uploaded some great LUTs that get the Blurays into much better shape. Not enough to fix the magenta laser illuminations and some other problems, though.

Wouldn't it make more sense to simply play the 2011 version as-is, and maybe have seamless branching to the HDTV 2004 version, since their color profiles match? Note: maybe do this with Schorman's 04 trilogy on myspleen. Great quality.

For the 1997, you could simply use the TB release. I mean, you could do the 2004 and seamlessly branch to an upscaled TB. Color correcting the 04 to that extent would be big project, though.

You are completely right. Since I'd only really begun work mapping out ANH, ESB and ROTJ I put in pretty much spur of the moment as placeholders and had a complete brain fart in remembering the differences. I feel like a total idiot. It's pretty early here and I'm writing these posts as I get ready for work so please forgive me for such a gross oversight.

I will include either the 2004 or 2011 versions of ESB and Jedi, or both 04 abd 11.

Eh, no worries. It's difficult to come up with a good plan without getting absolutely obsessed with including every variation. And despite the better image quality of 2004 and 2011, the color is substantially better in the 1997.

For ESB and ROTJ I only plan on having 1997 because the differences between those and 2004 are so minuscule.

I think the difference of Hayden in ROTJ 2004 is something that most of us here would consider "enormous". Certainly on par with changing Jabba's model in ANH.

Empire's changes are smaller in general, but I think the 1997->2004 changes are certainly noticeable: New Emperor, new Boba voice, removal of scream.

But also, this is a Blu-ray set. The 2004 editions can be included at 1080p and fairly high quality. The 1997 editions will never look as good as the rest of your set.

If your goal isn't to release every version (and it doesn't seem to be), then don't sweat it. But you might just want to be consistent and use a set of 1997, or 2004, or 2011 rather than mix it up for each film.

Help: looking for... Star Wars Theatrical Releases
Time

Well we're not going to post links as per the forum rules. But if you stick around for a bit I'm sure you'll pick up on how we go about sharing files and such.

But it also depends on what you mean by theatrical releases. Obviously, none of these are currently commercially available in their theatrical forms. You can get the laserdisc or 2006 DVD versions of the original trilogy. Or some of the great reconstructions that Harmy made. There are also 35mm projects in the works.

As for the prequels, there is one reconstruction of the theatrical Phantom Menace. There is a laserdisc rip, and a SD TV rip as well. Clones has only a theatrical cam version known to exist. There are workprints of Sith, but they are not currently available.

Star Wars Episode III: Labyrinth Of Evil (Released)

Hal 9000 said:

There are three things for Episode III that I'm planning on changing slightly for an eventual v4. The first is the death of Dooku. I like the idea of characterizing Anakin as being affected by the Clone Wars by having him kill Dooku without external provocation. But, it happens rather quickly, and I wonder if it would be more appropriate to merely remove Anakin's hesitation but still include Palpatine's goading. I'd be interested to hear others' take on this; I have not heard any complaints about the Dooku change, and many other edits have done it as well.

I'd like to trim Windu's dialogue as he and Anakin discuss arresting Palpatine. I'd like to remove his line about regaining his trust. It would go like this:
A: I must go, Master.

W: No. [REDACTED] Wait in the Council chambers until I return.

Windu comes across stubborn and more abrasive this way.

I think that's a great idea for the Dooku scene. I've actually been a bit skeptical of the way most people edit that scene, but it seems to be a universally accepted/expected change. Would like to see how it flows with your new suggestion.

And I think the Windu idea is good for Anakin's character. The more distrusting and stubborn the jedi are, the closer it comes to making sense that Anakin turns his back on them. Windu's lines, as they are, seem perfectly reasonable, making Anakin just an impatient little twerp being put in 'time out'. It also fits Windu's no-more-bullshit attitude when he confronts Palpatine.

The red blotches and areas will not be corrected, as that is inherent to these clips. We currently don't have the resources to do too much further correction, especially when we have a superior print that will be restored.

There, are many, many more areas of improvement needed. We only mentioned the main ones that are still being addressed.

If you you look further, there are quite a few scenes. No one has really mentioned any of the other areas, besides starfields.

Team Negative1

I'll give it another watch-through and try to give more comments on some of the other scenes.

But one question: why put so much effort into this print (s) when you've got one that's in much better shape? I'm sure you'll need it to patch a few things up, but it sounds like quite a lot of time and energy is going into it in general. Perhaps I don't understand your workflow correctly.

Can't wait to watch these but personally I'm REALLY looking forward to Return of the Jedi. Again, thank you for the hard work Dre.

I'm curious about ROTJ as well. But mostly because it's still up for debate if Dre's technique will benefit Jedi as much. It also doesn't seem settled whether or not the PAL or NTSC disc is ideal for that film.

On another note: Has Harmy made any comment about this work, yet? He says that even with all of team negative's 35mm sources, he will still need the GOUT here and there. Surely this project would be of great interest for that purpose.

I would assume this project would be an asset to Harmy's stuff. I think Harmy is just super busy these days though.

Oh, I'm sure that he's still pretty busy. Just wasn't sure if he's aware of the quality of this. Many people were pretty skeptical or wrote it off early on (and to be fair, it was no where near what it became). On the other hand, it's consistently one of the top threads for the last few months, so one might suspect that good things are indeed brewing in here. :)

<strong>STAR WARS: REBELS</strong> (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

It seems as though she may know, but is keeping it to herself. Hard to tell.

It's better that they keep it ambiguous, or have her not know, though. Obviously can't have knowledge of Vader's identity being discussed at the rebel water cooler. Hopefully they'll have a good confrontation before killing off her character at some point in the series.
