The beauty of the digital format is that, you can upgrade your monitor, projector, or TV when you wish, and gain benefit from it, accordingly.

The consumer race is over, only content creators care about increasingly high resolutions, and mastering issues.

I think these statements are not accurate.

In a sense the digital format replaces the video rental market, which traditionally was very much larger than the video sales market. Many consumers don't want to own movies, at least not if these movies are very expensive.

You also seem to treat the consumers as one homogeneous group, which is a gross simplification. Not everyone wants to drive a Volkswagen. Some of us prefer the Mercedes and are willing to pay through the nose for it.

I completely agree. But keep in mind that you're addressing someone("s") that is not allowed to respond in this thread. So it's not quite fair to keep pointing out how wrong (t)he(y) are is.

Why is it not named? Surely it isn't illegal to name it?

No, of course not. I was being needlessly ominous about it. But was probably also leaving it out by name because I've essentially mentioned that I've used it and it didn't want the thread to turn to discussion of that software. Have yet to see threads here about it, and I guess I assume we don't tend to discuss things with absolutely zero legitimate consumer end use.

Also there's the google-incompetent contingent who may ask for help acquiring it.

Oops, looks like I added to my post right as you were responding. Thanks for clarifying, though.

And, actually, I know you're probably pretty busy, but if you were ever able to make a tutorial on this subject I would be incredibly grateful. In fact, the entire portion of the internet that's interested in the subject might be. Your replies here are the first I have ever seen, in fact, that offer a solution. Generally, on any forum or tutorial, you will see something like:

"well, you can do playlists and just deal with the 0.5-1 second delay as it switches streams"

or

"This cannot be done with free software. BDedit can likely be used to achieve this, but it is mostly undocumented. The software you would actually need is $3,000-50,000"

Should also add that the software that will not be named is incredibly difficult to use. A simpler solution would really be great.

You can do it with BDedit on PC. Author your disc with the "non-seamless" version, and then use BDedit to set the MPLS files as seamless.

Interesting. Just do it as playlists and then switch the seamless flags?

Edit: I'm still learning about this stuff, so sorry if this doesn't make sense -

Non-seamless files should have multiple audio tracks (one for each alternate video), right? And seamless should be multiple video angles paired to the same audio track? If so, how should it be set up in order to later change in BDedit?

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

Has anyone else noticed the file layout of the ANH blu-ray.

It's kind of interesting (as much as a file layout can be, at least), that the film is encoded entirely in one m2ts, except for the intro. Everything up through the crawl, until the final frame of the flyover, is in a separate file.

Is there an obvious reason they might have done that? Or is it possible that they were considering an alternatively branched crawl? Not quite sure what the point would have been for the latter, sticking the 1977 crawl on a screwy version of the film.

Just thought it was kind of interesting that an important branching/splicing point for both fan editing and the film's history was utilized for some reason here.

Now seriously, the Plinkett review is adressing the same thing in the context of the prequels. I agree with that.

I agree with many things that guy said. I think his sense of humor is really lame though, and I tend to like crass humor. My main problem is that, in addition to his solid points, he gets so nitpicky that most films wouldn't hold up to the standard he has. Certainly not the OT in some cases. Seems like he really wanted to buffer the review out to whatever unholy length it ended up being.

Anyway, of course I agree with Dre. I forget where I heard this (maybe Mike V's video?), but apparently the original plan for the SE was just to clean up the first film and fix/redo the vaseline speeder Mos Eisley shot (without dinosaurs). If that had happened, I'd probably watch that version as my go-to. In part because my views on film revising would be much more relaxed, and because that shot does look awful.

Yeah. Made sure to clarify 'with audio' for that reason. I do have the blurays (and it looks like I won't be buying the next ones if there's no new transfer).

I've certainly heard them state the reason a number of times. It was a bummer for Eric and they don't want to upset him yet again. It makes sense, I'm just saying it'll still be a wish of mine to see/hear him in the role. The quotes from Gale usually just assume that Eric wouldn't want them out, but I've never heard him speak about it himself. Who knows. Maybe he'd actually say he's over it and would like to see the footage and it's been 30 years so no worries. :) [/wishfulthinking]

The animated BTFF was released on VHS and even Laserdisc in the 90's.

And perhaps DVD in some country? I believe a myspleen member was going through the process of syncing the English audio to some DVD. They finished Season 1 and part of 2 before apparently calling it quits.

Still hoping that someday someone will budge and release a Stoltz cut. Or at least a scene or clips with audio.
