-I also think people need to remember what constitutes Star Wars is different to different people. I think people here on this board generally have a narrow definition of what Star Wars is, which is fine, but also remember that that's not the case for a lot of people

Optical composites! It can't be Star Wars without those! /s

People were bickering about the then-forthcoming Revenge of the Jedi online on Usenet in 1982.

Would that still be archived anywhere?

Google Groups has the most complete archive, but the search is broken.

DejaDejaDeja.com has a much better search, but it's only 1981-1991.

Thank you, I've found a new way to waste my time. :P

I'm warning you guys, don't get your expectations up. The trailer is a window into the filmmaker's mind and what kind of story they are hoping to tell. All indications are that the story in this film will be poorly fleshed out. The characters will be kind of just there. The movie will be a sleekly produced but vapid Revenge of the Sith meets The Godfather Part 3 meets standard Hollywood blockbuster fare.

What kind of character fleshing-out can you expect from a trailer for a film with a big cast?

Who is the main character? Are they a Jedi? A wizard? A Paladin? What thing has caused them distress in their normal ordinary life such that they will be forced to journey into the world of the story?

The only thing this trailer does is put vague Star Wars like stuff on screen and tell you to come watch it because it's Star Wars.

 - There's a girl who thinks she's no one, but clearly dreams of getting off her backwater world... and then does and has adventures

- There's a disillusioned stormtrooper who, in seeking something to believe in, ends up with familiar heroes and a lightsaber, having adventures

- There's a bad guy who wants to carry on the legacy of Darth Vader

- Han is a very different man from the cynical, skeptical smuggler hired by an old man and a farmboy years ago

Sure sounds like two protagonists, a villain, and familiar supporting cast!

I completely disagree. Why would I need them to spoil everything with dialogue that ruins all the plot points for me?

A trailer should give you a heads up heading into the film about what you are going to see:

1. Who is the protagonist / who are the protagonists?

2. What is the protagonist(s) goal?

3. What villains or obstacles might stand in their way?

For instance, I have seen that new Mars trailer with Matt Damon several times this season. I haven't seen the film, but I know that if I do see it, I will be watching a movie with Matt Damon's character being the main character, and he will be stuck on Mars and people will be trying to rescue him. Whatever else happens in the film, I have no idea, and I have no idea whether he will live or die or whatever larger point there might be to all of it, so it's a nice mix of setting up the audience but not giving away too much.

This Star Wars Trailer on the other hand tells me:

Explosions! Storm Troopers! Lightsabers! Jedi! Harrison Ford is back!

It's Star Wars!

You see how underwhelming that looks to anyone who isn't drunk on kool-aid?

This is funny, given that people who read The Martian before seeing the trailer thought it was a horribly spoiler-filled trailer that would ruin the film for any newcomers to the story.

Crazy thought, but could Starkiller base actually be a super-weapon hidden inside an entire planet?

In this shot from the trailer it looks like the ground is opening up. And on the poster we see a Death Star type of super-weapon that looks like a snowy planet with a slit/crevice in the middle.

As previously discussed, yes. It's more than a possibility - it's confirmed.

Until someone assures this board that the film does not contain

  • universe shrinkage
  • teal-and-orange color timing
  • "bad" CG
  • references to the prequels
  • only 3 lightsabre colors
  • references to the SE

we won't, as a whole, be satisfied

I didn't know there was such consensus on the matter of lightsaber colors.

Oh, there isn't, but for total satisfaction...

Was there a scene with a Snowspeeder crashing into the cockpit of an AT-AT in ESB?

Thanks, I'll read that thread. Memory is a weird thing. General Veers death was a deleted scene, so the idea has certainly been out there. How I filled it in to remembering it I'm not sure.

For a long time I mis-remembered a scene in ROTJ where ships crash into the death star shield because they could not pull up in time. I watched many versions of the film looking for it and it was never there. Later I realized this was from the Radio Drama's which I used to listen to on a 7" record back in the day.

 You are not alone
