True, but I would argue that these two approaches are not highly distinct for an ever expanding property like Star Wars. Even if worldbuilding starts out with little glimpses, future installments will naturally expand these glimpses and give their own. The end result is the same - a large, continuing universe. Whether or not it’s well-thought-out is down to the care and planning of these stories.
So the worldbuilding for Star Wars has been a priority since the beginning of the Expanded Universe. Originally it was supposed to be this grand interconnected story, and it kinda was occasionally, but it quickly became careless and haphazard.
The weird thing is that everyone figured that the de-canonization of the old EU was to make way for a more Marvel-esque expanded universe from Disney, but their attempt has been no better than the first one.
Was it a priority? The “modern” EU started with Zahn refusing to include Dark Empire references in HotE, DE getting some HotE refs thrown in, and then DE being ignored for awhile. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Dark_Empire#Conception_and_release
(though I am surprised to learn he did include material from the Roleplaying Game)
(Never mind Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, Lando Adventures and Han Adventures, of course)
I think there’s a difference between world-building with a larger, continuing, well-thought-of universe in mind (what many fans want Star Wars to be, Marvel Cinematic Universe, etc) and providing little glimpses of a larger universe without too much concern for exploring or explaining in the future (what the original Star Wars did)
I guess not
Interesting to note that one saber has two parallel blades, and another has a knife or something on the other end.
That certainly would have left the door open to greater creativity in opening sequences in every film after that.
I could just edit this to be the Mandalorian Discussion thread.
Yes, please do that
I wonder why the top row of bonus discs looks larger than the other discs?
because it’s not a real photo, and they did a bad job, in terms of perspective and disc tilting, when assembling the image.
A little sad that their workplace got a little safer. But it does look nice, and I appreciate incorporating RO into the Revisited semi-canon.
Well that’s pretty neat.
Why would they?
Didn’t TLJ imply that Luke’s sacrifice would inspire rebellion across the galaxy? Wasn’t that what the end scene was all about?
Instead we got Luke sacrificing himself for no reason, no one in the galaxy caring about the First Order for a whole year, and then Lando somehow convinces the entire galaxy to fight the First Order in the span of 30 minutes.
Mm, not quite. The end of TLJ implies that the Force, hope, and people’s belief in what is good and right would continue to inspire rebellion against the forces of evil, as it always had, and that the seed of Millenium Falcon and its occupants, particularly Rey but really also everyone else, will grow in this galaxy of fertile soil, the spark that reignites the fire. Not many would necessarily know of Luke’s sacrifice, but that’s okay; his legend is firmly established as an example in the minds of many.
That’s the problem though: Luke’s legend doesn’t inspire rebellion across the galaxy. The Resistance has barely grown in the year between TLJ and TROS, and the only reason anyone bothered to show up at the final battle at Exegol was because of Lando’s insane smooth-talking skills. It’s another example of JJ throwing away all the good stuff from TLJ.
Oh, I wasn’t disagreeing with that. I haven’t even seen TROS.

A plethora of concept art from the rise of skywalker including Kylo Ren and chewbacca and the jedi temple on coruscant:

Surely these are from the “Duel of the Fates” draft
The fact that Williams has now been nominated for all of the OT and all of the ST makes his complete shut out from the PT all the more questionable. I think perhaps the only explanation is he had other scores those years that the Academy was more interested in.
Angela’s Ashes in 1999, Catch Me If You Can in 2002, and both Memories of a Geisha and Munich in 2005.

In 2002, he also had Minority Report and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets go unnominated, and War of the Worlds in 2005.

The usual Star Wars nominations, and actually fewer than TFA and TLJ. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_films#Accolades
It is fascinating that, with the exception of 7, you named the episodes that barely, if at all, moved the plot along. My favorites were 1, 3, 7 & 8, so I am…well, like I said, fascinated.
It’s not that weird, is it? Not everyone likes/prefers series to tell one large story, but rather wants mini-adventures with a connecting through-line. This is one of the reasons I enjoyed this show so much as I don’t like the modern Netflix/HBO style of stretching one story into hundreds of hours. I get why some people like it, but to me it just feels like padding. SW shows like the Mandalorian, CW, Rebels, etc. manage to keep my attention much easier because most episodes are (more-or-less) standalone stories, that occasionally continues or adds to a larger narrative. In this sense The Mandalorian was nearly perfectly structured for my preferences (I actually would have liked a few more episodes like 4-6).
Similarly, my favourite episodes were 2 & 6.
That really helped me understand. Clearly, I want the opposite (though honestly, I did really like 2 & 6, it’s just that the overall plot grabs me more). So, the fact that the show manages to hit some notes for both of us is pretty great; they’re striking a good balance.

I do think there is a point to having a separate topic, at least for now, on the new changes.
Yes. As many changes have been previously found, but they are mixed into other threads, it would be helpful if you went through those threads and collected them here. Thanks in advance!
Rumors are starting to circulate about an extended cut being released to theaters toward the end of the month:
THE 192 MINUTE J.J. ABRAMS RISE OF SKYWALKER CUT IS COMING SOONER THAN YOU THINKIt breaks down to this:
- An extended version of The Rise of Skywalker will be announced in the coming week, releasing near the end of January, and including 3-5 additional sequences fit into the narrative. This should bring the cut up from 142 minutes to about 165 minutes.
- Rumored sequences to be included in this cut involve an extended Endor sequence that occurs before the final shot in the current film, Lobot and Lando in a sequence that predates the chase in the desert, and a slew of ghost Jedis returning alongside Luke and Leia and participating in the final sequence to unseat the Emperor.
- This new cut will be simply treated as an Extended Cut, and will include a post-credits sequence highlighting additional sequences that will be released with the official Blu Ray release of The Rise of Skywalker which will have a special J.J. Abrams Director’s Cut version of the film at 185 minutes.
- When The Rise of Skywalker enters the streaming window exclusively on Disney Plus it will include an additional 7 minutes of extra footage that didn’t get finished in post production as a part of its exclusive run on the streaming upstart.
Interesting! Considering that most criticisms were leveled at the fast pacing, and lack of moments of reflection, the extended/director’s cut should make for a better movie.
Notably, the post makes a very time-based prediction

So, we have a week before we know if this is true?
Right, but having scenes with him before the Queen gets to Tatooine would be strange. And having this kid get involved with Senate negotiations would also be…odd.
If this does happen, I wonder what will be considered canon?
Both and neither.
Sounds about right.
Followed by many long posts here explaining why which one is or isn’t in someone’s personal canon
Just because there wasn’t a full-scale war doesn’t mean there weren’t any small wars

Besides the fact that it makes no sense, I like the idea of people who have literally never heard of the Jedi
Why does it make no sense?
he is gonna add ‘The Ghost’ from Rebels in the battle of Endor???
I hope so. Given what he did re: Rebels in ESB:R, it feels possible.
