Sounds like a call for full-assed effort to me!
Sounds like a call for full-assed effort to me!
I think it might require a Threepio costume and a greenscreen... but yeah, it is actually doable.
And a really great idea.

Why complain about the matte lines anyway? Arent you wanting the video to look as close to the original product as possible? Removing the matte lines will mean more tinkering, which everyone is complaing about. Im so confused by the indecision about fixing stuff and leaving it the way it was.
This is a central tension around here. The best way of explaining it, as near as I can figure, is to say that there are two main thoughts:
1. The Originals need to be released in high-quality scans worthy of the historically important and really great films that they are.
2. If you're going to do a Special Edition, which is pretty understandable given the modern viewing audience and wanting things to be a little more consistent across all 6 movies, at least do a good and thorough job.
Folks around here think Lucas has done neither. Not everyone agrees with #2, but many do. They're not mutually exclusive goals, either, because he could certainly release both.
Here in Baltimore, MD, we sure did feel it.

The guy/girl was hit by a poison dart. I don't see why poison darts couldn't do that to your face, in Star Wars.

Empire is a better movie, but Star Wars was the best Star Wars movie.
There's something about this statement that makes me feel like I'm seeing an impossible object in word form.
He's drawing a distinction between two systems of judgment. By the rules of "What makes a good movie?", Empire is better. By the rules of "What makes a good Star Wars movie?", Star Wars is better.
Above all, remember that although concepts like the rule of thirds should certainly inform, framing shots is ultimately an art.
I'm aware of the rule of thirds, but not every shot needs to obey it. There's something really, really great about the centered pod ejection shot, and not just because it's classic Star Wars, first effects shot they filmed, etc.
I do think that this shot is actually much better centered.
The greatest contraction is for "You all will have"
Y'all'll've
I really do prefer the uncropped.

Also, he mentioned that most deleted scenes are in HD, except for those shot on analog video. Which deleted scenes could possibly be analog video? Why would they even shoot in analog in the first place?
The scene with Vader that was reused/dubbed for the Holiday Special may only have been available anymore from the Holiday Special. Not sure what they'd do about the audio.

There are also some sad things:
Q: Was there any thought given to archiving previous tracks like the 6-track master from the 70mm prints or the 78 mono remix? Any thought given to putting them on the Blu-ray?
A: Yes, we have those and they’ve all been digitized. I don’t know if they considered putting those on the Blu-ray. That might be more of a question for Marketing, it may be an issue of space. It’s funny because I play those other audio tracks, like the scene when R2 and C3PO have been left on Tatooine and they walk through the canyon. I just love that on the current mix, you can actually hear the quiet, when R2 is lonely, going through the canyon. I played the original mix and it’s FULL of hiss and totally brittle, so it’s fun now to hear it like George wanted it to really be, what was intended.
So they have the restored 1977 70mm sound. Now all we need is that they scan the original elements from the negative, incorporate them into SE negative and release it on BD with lossless sound. Sadly, this will probably never happen.
I figure they'll do the OT-release eventually, and the original sound is for that.
I guess I was thinking that most of the frame would be from the HD source and only the very edges, the cropped part, would be the SD
Oh, something I've been wondering...
Any chance of uncropping the Falcon cockpit shots, like how Harmy has done certain things?

Some answers have come back from the Home Theater Forum questions:

- "Humdinger Glitch"? Check
- Color timing? Check
Well, these certainly remain to be seen.
They showed it on Entertainment Tonight once, I think.
Another in the Bad Delivery pile...
"Inform the commander that Lord Vader's shuttle has arrived!"
I almost want to make a "There was no father" joke?
Back on topic, "Copy Gold Leader" has really, really awful delivery.
"Pick up your visual scanning" has always cracked me up. "Look around you!"
I was with you until you said lobotomised - That's the wrong word, as that results in a personality change, and I think overstates the situation. The rest of your points were solid, though, so I'm now feeling good about replacing Artoo's laughter with a mournful whistle.
Besides lobotomised clearly the process by which one becomes a cyborg.
As for Classic LOL...well, I guess I'm honored.
You'll never forget, will you?
(of course not, you're no protocol droid)

and Artoo laughing his nuts off as Threepio is about to have his memory wiped
To be honest, that part didn't bother me. The relationship between Artoo and Threepio has always sort of been like that, I thought. I've been people try to play this up as a tragic moment, an inhumane act, etc. Artoo knows, however, that Threepio will go on being Threepio. His personality doesn't change, his essence isn't lost.

Look at the Prequel deleted scenes though; where are all the ones that appeared on the DVDs?
Padme's family is conspicuously absent...
Xhonzi! Are you saying you were in one of the rare theatres showing a 70mm print with the monomix, including all of the Biggs scenes?! You lucky man!
