FACE/OFF - complete 35mm scan opportunity (WIP)
Time

Me and a few other generous members have been putting money towards a 4K scan of FACE OFF from 35mm, a copy that is in very good shape and that can finally show us how the film looked originally in theaters and yes, it’s pretty different from any home video release. Most noticeably, the lack of heavy DNR seen on BluRay and HD-DVD to the point that close-ups of the actors’ faces look like wax statues with rubber ears (very much like the faces seen in the infamous BD of Predator), one would never guess that Nic Cage had a 5 o’clock shadow when he finds himself in jail, but there it is on the 35mm, in its whole grainy glory. Comparison shots also show a different color palette in many parts of the movie and a radically different use of light. It seems like the home video releases were also zoomed/cropped to some extent compared to theatrical release.

Here’s some examples of the theatrical look compared to HD releases

We have the rare opportunity to scan it with professional equipment for a very cheap price all included, this means there won’t be further expenses involved afterwards… and we are barely 100 euro away from the goal. W’re kinda short on time to make this happen so anybody feeling generous and wanting to help us out feel free to contact me in private for a donation. Any little helps.
There’s a tight deadline on this print because it has to be returned to its owner. If the money isn’t raised by the end of the month we loose the opportunity to have it scanned!

The files will be passed on to PDB who’s gonna take charge of the project once the scan is complete (thanks PDB!) and eventually release it the way all preservation projects get released, but in the immediate future a direct BD-25 release will be made available very shortly after the scan (limited to those who donated). We only have so much time, thanks in advance for your help.

Edit: THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN ABANDONED due to the scanner disappearing on us.

Preserving the "Italian" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

I would have to dig it out, give me some time, I’m super busy with another project at the moment.

The problem with a multi language release is something call seamless branching which would allow to have different versions in the same disc but it’s something that I don’t think anybody here has managed to adopt. It requires very expensive professional software and knowledge on how to use it. That would be the dream though!

I’ll put it on wetransfer

Could you please upload them here ,just for reference?

Allow me to be bold… who are you?

Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t introduce myself. I think you are Evit from the blog Doppiaggi Italioti, right? I read your article about the preservation of the italian version there and I took a look at this topic. I’m just curious to see those subtitles, because I’ve heard they have a very different translation from all other versions, that’s all, of course if you can and if you want to show those images. 😉

Yes, I am. When I asked who you are I didn’t expect a formal introduction but I implied that joining the forum only to ask for specific reference material within your first post is quite an uncommon thing to do around here and could be seen as suspicious, in fact it is. You could have asked me this directly under the article and if you are that same “John Doom” from the comments on my blog then you tried to bypass me and already know the answer: I’m not sharing my reference material just like that. If the translated words are all you want “for reference” then I can even transcribe them for you at some point but the visual element is out of discussion, since it costed me a whole lot to retrieve that footage myself you will understand if I don’t just give it away so that others can do their own thing with it, unless they are well-known members here with a declared project.
I trust that Harmy will soon come out with an updated version of the trilogy, then we will put that reference material to use. Until then I’m afraid that you’ll have to wait just like anybody else, me included. I’m sorry if you joined the forum just for that, there’s plenty of interesting projects going on to read about or contribute to. I hope you will stay

Don’t worry, I can understand you don’t want to share your personal footage,it’s not a problem at all, I was only interested in the translation.I didn’t join the website just to ask you that, that would be very stupid, I joined because I am very interested in all the projects around here including foreign language versions. Plus I am not that John Doom you’re talking about, I use a different name to comment under your articles. With that said I hope I didn’t bother you too much and I’ll wait until the new Harmy version comes out. Do you know if it is like a .mkv containing all the foreign version or is it just a different version for each language. Thanks for the attention, bye

Sorry if I took you for another person, I’ve already been asked the same thing in the past and I thought it might be the same person requesting it… yes, now that you sent me a comment with your email I remember you, Matt, how do you do?. I can send you a transcription of the dialogues from the alien subtitles if that interests you, the first translation was indeed more refined and over-all better.

As for Harmy’s release, I’m afraid you’ll have to keep an eye on his thread as I don’t know the details myself. I’m always hoping that Harmy will deal with all the different languages himself but until now he has delegated local versions of his work to others, like me and Leo for the Italian one, so the next one might be up to me and Leo again but I’m pushing for a direct Harmy release, based on my reference material of course.

THX on 35mm Tech IB preservation - HELP NEEDED (work in progress)

Was wondering if it was still possible to contribute in some way to this project?

Someone let me know, I’d be happy to help in whatever way I can!

You can definitely contact Poita for this, I know he’s still facing plenty of expenses to work on this project. Drop him a message (or contact me if you prefer. Same thing). Cheers

I would love a making-of but it’s really up to Poita who’s doing the heavy work with the after-scan restoration and I don’t know if he would like to appear on camera like Harmy does (I doubt he would but I’d love something like that)
Personally, I had in mind to do something like that but not having dome the actual work myself, I could only show the before and after and explain what Poita did if he doesn’t wish to appear himself.

Any monetary contribution at this point can be sent to Poita who’s sustaining plenty of expenses in order to fix this film for release. My costs for the scan, the HDDs, the shipping to Poita etc have all been covered.

Beauty and the Beast - 35mm "Help Needed" (a WIP)
Time

Oh, don’t worry, there’s plenty of people like that around. A guy in Italy has been trying to sell the first VHS tapes of the Star Wars trilogy for 800 euro each. He figures, it’s free to list stuff on ebay and one day he might find somebody stupid enough to pay that price and he’ll make $$$! (market value of those tapes 1 euro)

Help: looking for... 'Escape from New York' with FRENCH or GERMAN titles from LD or VHS
Time

I did, he said he doesn’t have a player anymore so he can’t check. I also found a French LD on ebay and I’ve asked that seller too, now I’m waiting on his answer.
This film never came out in Laserdisc in Italy but the bootleg tape is enough to reconstruct all the intro titles, as a matter of fact I just finished those, down to the exact font used.

Every time I have seen this film on German TV, it had English title and introduction text (which was translated by a narrator).

It’s the same here in Italy. I only found the translated text on a rare bootleg tape from the 80’s but I’m hoping to find eventual German or French text on laserdisc, perhaps VHS

Like most of my preservation efforts, I’m working on a release of this film for the Italian audience, however, I’m going to make use of seamless branching so this project will include both original and Italian versions of the intro titles. And since I’ll be fiddling with seamless branching it’s easy to add other alternative versions of the same segments, so I wanted to know if this film was ever released on home video in any other European country with localized title screens? Perhaps in the French or German Laserdiscs and/or VHS? Can anybody check it out for me? I would love to add more localized versions.
