Oh right I forgot we're already putting all the extra in the first disc. Well we might re-use some of those images (we've got at least 2 or 3 Italian posters if I'm not mistaken) to "decorate" the text, so it's not too "bare looking" and boring.

I think we owe a good explanation to those who, besides us, are not aware of this Italian cut and will be wondering why there's an Italian cut at all attached to a preservation release of the original THX-1138

As I probably already said I'm preparing some written stuff to put as extra in the dvd (perhaps as trivia list to associate with some rare pictures we collected). In this written text I'm explaining all about this Italian cut in the form of short paragraphs (so it will be easier to present it "cut up"). Just keep in mind I've got this stuff to send you, when it will be time for you to work on the extras.

Ok I think it's THX speaking in both, if you listen to him talking around minute 23' of the film you can hear the same tone. I vote THX in both lines. Let me know what you think

Leo, please open the film in Italian and check at 56.25. The lines "Lo sai cosa sono questi? / Sono morti", can you tell me who the heck is speaking there? The first line is definitely delivered by THX because I can see his jaw moving. The second line "sono morti", is it still THX speaking (that's what I first thought) or is it the hologram replying? Thanks for your help. Msycamore was puzzled at that but so am I

I've been dreaming of posting these days but I've been very busy. Fist time I turn the PC on in days! (Msycamore, I'll check your file as soon as I can, give me some days ok?).

From what I read, a few of you haven't really read carefully the previous pages (I know it's 22 of them!). No need to get worried guys, this is an English preservation project of THX with a little extra for the fans... this being an extra disc with the Italian version of the film subtitled in English.

I emailed you the hi-res scan. Remember to remove the part that reads "Visto censura n°93... etc" because that identify the film I took it from (in this case Eyes Wide Shut, a laugh compared to other countries rating for this film)

erri_wan, I noticed than SEN is named JEN and OMM is named IMM in the Italian closing titles, are they pronounced that way in the film as well?

No, they have just been mistyped in the end credits but the names are pronounced correctly throughout the film.

I re-watched the video I put on youtube, yes I can see there is a little delay, more noticeable on the car engine noises. If you can fix it without too much effort I won't mind but it's not too disturbing for me.

Can I ask someone (anyone!) the favour to find me where Lucas tells about the Studios wanting to cut a few seconds off the film just for the sake of it? If I'm not mistaken, he also said in that interview that they wanted a different start to the film that should have been more explanatory for the public.

I can't remember if all this was in the audio commentary or in the DVD interviews.

About the Italian certification... according to imdb it's V.M. 14 (that's the DVD rating I think, probably the VHS was the same).

As for the out of sync... yes that reflects the sloppy dubbing of this film. If you can fix it it would be nice but if it's too much troubles don't worry at all. I don't remember particular moments that were out of sync except the generic and consistent bad sync all through the film. I don't think there is much you can do to fix that honestly, only be careful to correct the subtitles timing accordingly if you do.

I'm ok with the 3gb overkill considering that it will be contained in a second disc anyway. I feel your pain for the interrupted encoding though, power always seems to stop in the most undersiderable moments, it happened to me a lot in the past so I decided to buy a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and stop worrying, best 69 euro ever spent!

I'll start writing a list of notes about the Italian release which we could then put in the DVD, maybe as trivia notes under the pictures from the gallery? (like Jaws DVD). Just an idea

I read on the bottom of the Italian poster "DISTRIBUITED IN TECHNICOLOR, PANORAMIC SCREEN". That means it must have been shown in cinema because I doubt VHS were in widescreen, we didn't even have Star Wars in widescreen until 1997!

Your translation of the Italian title is correct. There was a tendency in Italy to alterate some titles to give an imediate indication of the genre, the choice of the new title would come from previous famous movies.

I give you an example. Since 2001: Odissey in Space, a lot of movies have had the futuristic year put before the title to indicate a sci-fi movie, so we get stuff like "1997: Fuga da New York" ("1997: Escape from New York" instead of just "Escape from New York"). "2022 - I Sopravvissuti" (2020-The Survivors) instead of "Soylent Green" (yuck!).

The explanation of "The Man Who Escaped From The Future" comes from another classic sci fi movie, "Time Machine" (1960) which in Italy was released as "The Man Who Lived in the Future". So they made THX as the man who escaped it. Funny uh? I've recently opened a blog just about all this stuff lol

msycamore I love the simplicity of the cover and the fact that you used both exclusively Italian posters and writing. Italians would surely appreciate having a separate disc. I never thought about having separate disc and cover... if it doesn't happen I would still love to have it in my private collection so keep it saved somewhere because I'll ask for it in due time ;-)

Speaking of else, I don't think I ever told you guys but I once downloaded a THX preservation DVD (from laserdisc source) with printable cover through a link from imdb forum. The art cover was simple but nicely done, with a medicine cabinet on the front. Was anyone from this forum involved with that production? Do you need pics of the DVD that I burned and printed?

That interview is a priceless insight of George Lucas whom (for me) has changed from childhood hero to despicable character in the span of a few years.

As fot the PAL/NTSC... what's your thought? Are you planning to just use the NTSC source then or use the PAL for the EU version nonetheless?

SilverWook and msycamore, please open the srt file with notepad and change this line:

with this:

it will correct the "glitch"

Yes apparently Lucas foretold a lot of things. On the commentary he mentioned the dedicated TV channels which are common now but didn't exist back then.

I just thought that in Italian I don't remember hearing the "buy now, buy more" line. Am I right? (I'm not at my computer now so I can't check it)

But I remember the voice saying "This is your resting day, be efficient in your resting" or something like that. I guess they didn't want to give Italians the anti-consumerism message of the film.

Also it seems that there was some misunderstanding of the dubbers as wether germs (of thought) were also to be considered "radiation". I tried to cut down a lot of stupid stuff like that. Germs = radiation is something to be deleted from history of dubbing forever.

I've spared you also from other idiotic things such as LUH been "renamed" FOETUS (as in "Foetus is her new name", they didn't get it actually meant that the name went to A foetus). What kind of name is "Foetus" anyway? lol

I can't stretch enough the fact that this is a very atypically lousy localization. It seems that the traslators even forgot what they were translating only few minutes before. While "poetic licenses" have often been taken in the past, it has never been this bad in the history of dubbed films. Leonardo was also quite shocked by this version of the film.

As for the Department of Biological Flow... yes ok. I suppose it's exactly the same thing. At first I left that but you know, when you watch something too many times it's easy to loose some common sense.
