THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

SEN footage in English, re-release trailer and radio spots are a must. I don't care about the stuff I already have in the DVD to be honest.

I'm currently reading Ben Bova novelization and it's almost like a different story. I don't know if Bova based it on an early script or if Lucas changed the story a lot in the shooting/editing but the dynamics are often much different (and some stuff makes much more sense).

Oh and we get to know what happened to LUH while THX was in the limbo... although I wish we didn't. She ends up on the TV broadcast where the police robots beat up people (until then she believed those shows only featured holograms) and right after the beating (if you want spoilers keep reading...) she gets raped by three custody guards while an operator watches it on screen (apparently custody guards were considered worse than the prisoners but a "necessary evil"). It was very depressing I have to say. Probably it was best to be left untold.

The rest of the book is quite entertaining for a fan like me. In the book it's actually THX's fault if they get caught because after the first sexual interactions he goes to a psychiatrist to talk about it, telling him that it's something that happened to a friend but the doctor understands the situation and alerts the authorities. Monitoring was infact random and they only had a very small chance of getting caught... if it wasn't for THX.

Msycamore are you curious to know where is the trial placed in the novelization? The book was written in '71 so it should reflect the first cut of the movie don't you think?

You have a valid point. It is my understanding that these projects stay within legality as long as we preserve only the works that are "out of print". Although it's nice to have a "definitive edition" with all the featurettes perhaps it's best to aim for legal safety and stick to the unavailable material only.

You guys did great with the translation. Love that pic of the DVD. :) It also makes me happy to see that you own Dark Star, love Carpenter's early work, after The Thing it went downhill.

The Italian DVD is still seeded on MySpleen last time I checked.

Edit: And what did you say Leo? ;)

Oh that's just the first line of DVDs, I also have The Thing and you can just make the ending of the title "Escape from New York".

I do like Carpenter and I also like several of his films after The Thing: Prince of Darkness (which feels very much like Precinct 13), They Live! (one of my favourites), Big Trouble in Little China and Vampires.

Leo was just telling me that he just found out how the DVD subtitles work, much more complicated than he imagined (as you already found out when you worked on the Italian subs)

I was just checking some other scenes. If I may say so... I'm particularly proud of the subtitles in the scene "kids on the escalator". I had to find  translated words all beginning with M, which required a dictionary in some cases. The only doubt is about the very last word that I translated as "correct". The doubt is in the Italian audio, not being very clear. I hear "ELATTO", I guess it's "ESATTO" (correct). Hopefully msycamore's tape will be clearer!

By the way, check out how it looks on the shelf (sorry for the low quality, I took the picture with my mobile)

Leo have you seen it yet? I keep forgetting who I gave this film to

no, I ain't, I just gots the original avi file.

Have you got the subtitles in English though? The final version I mean

no, you never gave them to me, iirc.

That's because the final version of the subs are only on DVD, msycamore worked on those and had to change the timing too if I'm not mistaken. Perhaps I can "grab" them from the DVD, if somebody can explain me how to.

... or I just mail you the DVD lol

I think THX is gridhouse enough lol

Is the Warner/Kinney logo from the 16mm print a static image? Because in that case I can ask my friend to "restore" it in photoshop (the same guy who worked on the Ciriello's artwork cover)

Aside from the fade in and fade out, the logo is static.

The ITA version certainly gets into grindhouse territory.

I know, I've got some hopes for the tape msycamore bought! Finger supercrossed!

If it's a static logo send me the highest quality image of it that you can get and I'll forward it to my photoshop magician friend. The fading can be reproduced

you never know what the Italian tape I ordered will bring us.

I catch the drift ;-)

At 14.04

Cinque uomini sono fuggiti dal centro riabilitazione DD2...

riacciuffati sono stati sottoposti a trattamento duro

Change the subtitles of those two lines with these:

Five men escaped from rehabilitation center DD2

all five have been caught and given hard treatment

or

Five men fled rehabilitation center DD2

all five have been caught and given hard treatment

If you watch the scene again you'll see that the dialogue subtitled in English is kinda "repetitive" on the fact that they have been caught. Must be due to too many revisions. Sorry about that.

(I think the "all five" was your modification from my original translation but I like it. The news reporter literally says "once caught they have been given hard treatment")

There was one point I would like to correct, when LUH and THX are listening to the news and there's a talk about fugitives being caught. There was some pointless repetition there that could have been shortened... nothing major but I didn't tell because I didn't want to burden you more than necessary msycamore.

He was probably referring to the 8 years between the american version, in Italy we usually think in terms of "american release" dates. In any case when I'll visit him (eventually) I can't wait to read the dates on those lobby cards and posters... I do hope dates were printed on them.

I also wonder what version was released on VHS. I can only suppose the first version since the second was specifically made the way Lucas wanted. This would give credits to the theory that the Italian VHS version is actually the original theatrical release? Or still an exclusive cut as we currently believe if I'm not mistaken.

Msycamore, huge breakthrough about the story of the Italian release.

In a book fair I found a guy selling all sorts of cinema posters (the father of this man owned a cinema back in the days). I asked if he had THX and he said unfortunately he didn't bring it but he does. He told me he had two sets, one from the first release and another from the second release of the movie that came years later. So the film was indeed released in Italy in two occasions (first release and then Lucas re-release 8 years later), this is confirmed.

I told him about our project and he was happy to know that we used Averardo Ciriello artwork for the DVD cover. He told me the very first release had that cover while the second release came with photographic posters (not artwork).

2004 version has not been released in theaters in Italy.

The guy lives in Ravenna he told me I could go visit him. Italian posters from the 70's guys, if anyone wants them he sells them for 10 euro each (way cheaper than ebay) and he's got plenty of them (the full set that they expose in the theatre hall and outside). I think I'll buy myself the Averardo Ciriello one. I would need to drive up to Ravenna which is not too far but neither behind the corner. However I'm curious to go there and photograph the stuff he has, probably there are posterst we don't know about.

Well this is my news, if you fancy updating what we know about the history of Italian release

I doubt they would know since our codes are much different. You may try generating your own Italian codice fiscale here http://www.codicefiscale.com/

"Comune di nascita" put SVEZIA

or from here http://gratis.pietrelcinanet.com/codice_fiscale/codice.htm in "scegli comune" you click ESTERO and select SVEZIA

If still doesn't work I'll email them asking what could you put there.

Silverwook I'm not surprised by the request of the social security number though. In Italy it's quite commonly requested and we still don't have many cases of identity theft, that's a concept I only learnt in the UK and from Family Guy lol.
