Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!

The fuchsia to red on the X-wing shot got a bit blocky, although everything else in that shot looks great. I bet the reference frame you are using just doesn't have enough magenta in it for a good mapping. I wonder what would happen if you used Mike's version of that frame as the reference.

I think it is in the source.  Watch this video and Mike talks about it: https://vimeo.com/124147988

1997 U.S. Special Edition 35mm Trailer Reconstruction - V1.0 available now

Thanks Thorr - I'm really honoured you took the time to comment, seeing as you really were the inspiration for this reconstruction. Thanks for all your efforts.

Thanks!  I am glad I helped contribute something too and inspired you.

For those who missed it before, here was my latest sample that I posted previously.  I scanned this from the 35 mm trailer myself and did everything from scratch.  I actually have quite a bit more done than this but I didn't make a clip out of it yet.  If I get some free time, I might make a longer clip with what I have completed.

The whites are blown out on the storm trooper on the right and a lot of shots came out sort of yellow and too bright and the faces are a bit orange.  The reference frame looks great at first glance until you start to see these other frames and look at it again.

Looking again at the original, it is brighter so all of the other scenes will be brighter too.  Can you do comparisons with the original without adjusting it?

Edit: I posted that before seeing the -1 corrections.  My comments for those is everything looks too green and dark. R2's head doesn't look silver for example.  I wouldn't necessarily worry about it though.  I would be more interested in the bluray and the Gout.

All of them are reddish including the original that you adjusted.  The easy way to see it is to look at the storm troopers.  They should be white or gray and not have any color to them unless there was colored lighting in the shot.  They are pinkish purple in your adjusted version.  A simple way to see it is open mspaint and make an all white background.  Put the storm trooper in the middle of the white background and see if it is white or another color.

I did some further tests using a screenshot posted by Mike Verta as a basis. That screenshot was somewhat green shifted, so I first corrected that:

I think it went from green to red.  If you can find the middle of these two, then it would probably be perfect.

The LOTR shots are awesome.

The color prediction I did for Leia frame based on a 35 mm frame, is surprisingly close to a similar frame of Star Wars Legacy Edtion, that Mike Verta posted on his website.

I must admit, I really like these more saturated colors. They look really film like.

Wow, I really want Legacy to be released.  That image is absolutely stunning.  Leia's gown is a bit yellow compared to the storm troopers and the skin tones and the rest of the colors are outstanding.

I see, but that does mean that the frame with the soldier's face could not be corrected based on the Darth Vader frame. The two frames are not similar in the sense that they depict a different scenery.

I would think even your method wouldn't work well in some cases.  For example, if you took a desert scene and applied it to a snow scene, it probably wouldn't look right.

Star Wars GOUT in HD using super resolution algorithm (* unfinished project *)
Time

The blacks are crushed and the highlights are blown out.  The same look can be achieved without blowing out the details.  Just need to be careful with the curves.  The first 35mm frame has the blacks crushed also where the second one is not as bad.

What is stunning is that in some parts of the frame, super-resolution has more actual detail than the 35mm print (especially the non-color corrected version).

I agree that in the stills V12 looks better than V13.  Video might be a different story.  It's possible the grain of V12 is static from frame to frame and doesn't really add to the detail, but it looks like it does in one single frame.

What would be cool is a 3-5 second back to back clip of V12 and V13 that could be looped.

I think SRV13 may be my new favorite.  Comparisons of SRV12 and SRV13 would definitely be interesting especially if they show the floating grain reduced or removed.  I believe I commented on that awhile back too so it is nice to hear it can be removed. The only glaring issue left that I wish could be removed is the halos.  Maybe we gave up to early on that effort.

And kane1138, I mostly wanted some new screenshots and figured it wouldn't hurt to ask for an update while I was at it.  And look what happened with all this new discussion, so :P   ;-)

Idea: The Force Awakens Color Correction
Time

The color differences are quite noticeable (his suit is red vs. orange), but also what is striking are the detail differences.  He looks clean shaven vs not.  Most of it is probably due to compression, but that is pretty bad.  I hope the real deal ends up less color adjusted and much more detailed like the trading cards.  I have seen other recent pictures of him and his suit is that incorrect burgundy red.
