STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>

Ah, I see.  I thought adywan was putting an ESB-themed version of sky's original moving 'adywan' intro. on the actual edit, and perhaps using a mainly-'static' version of vaderios's mock-up on the 'extras' disc.  Sorry for any confusion thorr.

No problem.  :-)  It's cool that a few people already thought of the same idea.  I am sure Adywan will do what he thinks is best (which may end up being nothing in this case).  I think it is a cool idea because it is an attention grabber right away before the movie starts to let the audience know that it is something special.  It is probably the only place to have a little not-so-serious fun with the editing so it doesn't ruin the real work for the rest of the movie.   It is also the right movie to do it with since it has the Cloud City theme.  Maybe in RotJ he can have dualing red and green light sabers coming out of the moving lights, lol.

That looks a bit like Cloud City.  Maybe you could have some of the Cloud City ships patrolling during that scene.  Over on the right, it looks like a landing platform.  You could have the Millenium Falcon land there.  ;-)

Wow, that was quick.  Great job! :-)  I like having Slave-1 there instead of the Falcon.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time

So how about putting a team of people together to do it:

- One person scans the frames to a server that the rest of the team of like 30 people has access to via terminal services so they don't have to download all of the images to their own computer.  There could be more than one person doing the scans as well (one person and server for each reel of film), but they should all use the same type of scanner and same scanning settings to keep the look consistent.

- The rest of the team meticulously positions, crops and resizes each frame and saves it to another folder with a filename of the frame number like 00000.png.  They could also do a quick rough crop of each frame that includes some extra around the edges and save that to another folder as a backup just in case any of the frames are messed up in the final product.

- Once all of the frames are created, import them into a tool such as Vegas and do the color correction and export the AVCHD.

Disk space is cheap, so I don't see that as an issue.

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

Ok, I just tried scanning a slide and it worked perfectly.  So in theory, this could be done.  I scanned a standard sized slide (very small) at 1600 DPI and it came out to 2216x1508 (roughly cropped to the edges).   A 35mm frame would be larger than these little slides, so my scanner is more than capable of making an HD scan of the movie.  According to wikipedia, 35mm film is 16 frames per foot.  My scanner can scan up to a foot at a time.  Of course I would probably have some overlap so lets say I do 12 frames at a time to make calculations easy.  It would take me two scans for every second of film.  Assuming the movie is 121 minutes long, that would be 7260 seconds or 14520 scans.  If I did 100 scans a day on average, it would take me about 145 days to complete the whole movie.  I would probably do a lot more than 100 scans at a time, but not every day.  The only thing left would be to cut and paste the scanned frames into single pictures and digitally remove any blemishes using photoshop or whatever if desired and resize/stretch them to the proper resolution and aspect ratio and save them in a lossless format such as .PNG, then import the pictures into Vegas or whatever, correct the color, and make the AVCHD movie.

Am I crazy, or would this work?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but it is something I have been wondering about.  I have an older high quality Epson flatbed scanner that came with an adapter that can be used to scan film negatives and slides.  I have never used the adapter and I am not even sure I couldn't just put the film negatives and slides directly on the scanner and get the same result.  I have some slides in the garage, so I guess I should just try it.

Anyway, my question is this:  If I were to have access to a 35mm film, couldn't I just lay the film on the flatbed scanner and scan the film at a high DPI and get several frames at a time with each scan and just keep feeding it through for each set of frames?  I know it would take a long time to scan the whole movie, but if that worked, I would be more than willing to take the time to do it.  It wouldn't cost anything and I wouldn't need any special equipment.  I also have that adapter mentioned above if I needed that to make it work.

As others have mentioned, I am glad this is finally happening at least in a quality DVD format, but I am disappointed that it won't be in HD.  I would be willing to help if my idea would work.  Now I am curious about my slides, so I guess I will go get one and try scanning it to see what happens.  It should be essentially the same as a 35 mm film frame since both are projected on a screen.

The Phantom Menace -Theatrical Version - NTSC DVD- ADYWAN - NOW AVAILABLE
Time

Hi just a quick question because I am a bit confused.  Everyone says that this version looks and sounds so much better than the DVD.  I can certainly expect this given how it was created.  My question is, how does the recently released color corrected HD version sound compared to this release.  I am asking because I would probably rather watch the HD version for the even better picture quality.  I am just wondering mostly how the sound compares.  I will still download it regardless so that I have a copy of the theatrical version.  It would be cool if an HD version of this could be done with just a few SD scenes when necessary.

Thanks.

You can also try using eac3to to convert to 23.976.  It will do everything for you.  Just use a format like this:

eac3to c:\sourceblurayfolder c:\newfile.mkv -slowdown -640 (for 640k AC3)

Then use tsmuxer to create the blu-ray folder from the mkv.

Hope this helps.

Help Wanted: Star Wars / Empire Strikes Back - 24-bit LP preservation - request for help

Hi John,

Sorry it didn't help, and sorry to hear about your illness.  Maybe this will help you or someone else to accomplish your task: http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-97284.html

There is a guy on there that said he used muxman ($35) and made a single 24/96 track with a BMP for the video.

Best Regards,

Mike

Fantastic!  I did a bit of research and DVD Video does support 24/96 PCM in Stereo.  This site might help you: http://www.psaudio.com/ps/forum/forumdisplay.php/viewthread/12/

Which links to this site with a free program that supposedly will create the disk:

http://audioplex.sourceforge.net/

It is audio only, but at least should work on a dvd player so you can listen to it in full 24/96 if the player doesn't downconvert it.

There may be other programs that will do the video too.  Just be careful that it doesn't downconvert the audio.

Hope this helps!

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 &amp; Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 &amp; 5 available now

Hi Adywan, thanks for all of your efforts in bringing us the next installment of the Star Wars saga!  I can't wait to see it in all of its color corrected glory!  The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite!  :-)

I am very impressed with your work and it has motivated me to try a project of my own.  I want to take my Superman and Superman 2 - Donner Cut HD-DVD's along with the Superman 2 Deluxe DVD and cut and paste the scenes together in my own order to make one movie and produce a final product that I can burn to DVD-9 AVCHD.  The HD-DVD's have Dolby Digital Plus and VC-1.   I will need to upconvert the DVD to match the HD-DVD's and probably re-encode the sound so that it is smooth throughout since I will be chopping up the AC3 all over the place.  Are there any tools out there that will support VC-1 and extract AC3 from DD+ with a final product being encoded to AVCHD with AC3?  I think I saw that you use Vegas, but I am not sure it will support VC-1.  Cyberlink Power Director might work, but it supposedly is buggy and crashes a lot.

Sorry, I don't want to take away from the topic of this thread at all.  I just need to be pointed in the right direction with which tool(s) I need and I can research the rest from there.  You can PM me if you want.  Thanks!!

Mike

First off, how's it goin' Thor!  I take it you just came into the fray?

Anyways, Adywan's made it clear he's stickin' with the red AT-AT lasers, and as many have stated, it's his show.  While I think it would be cool and maybe (maybe) more fitting (again: big stuff, green, small stuff, red), this is going to be for me or someone else to do editing-wise.  The bottom line is that Adywan is doing all the work, so HE gets to do what he wants since he is the one doing it.

Adywan: sorry if you've gotten an ulcer or migrane or slight pain in the rump because of me or others - I understand, as a previous poster put it, that we are DAMN lucky to have a dude who is willing to spend a YEAR or more of his time to do what an entire corporation couldn't.  While I have my niggles, I'm sure most of us will be blown away.

BTW, have you thought of sectioning out some of the work to other editors on fanedit.org to take some of the load off of yourself?

Hi Monroville!  Yes I just recently discovered Adywan's great work when he released the HD version of Star Wars for PS3 and Blu-Ray players.  I was very impressed with the color correction.  Then I discovered Star Wars Revisited and got very excited about it and told tons of people and made copies for them.  Strangers have even asked me about it when I am at restaurants talking about it with whoever I am there with.

I haven't taken the time to read all 159 pages for ESB Revisited, but was under the impression the AT-AT lasers would be green.  My bad.  Oh well, I can imagine how cool it would have looked, but I am not going to get all upset that they will be red (or blue or gray, lol).  It's funny I never noticed the blue TIE's before.  I had the Darth Vader Tie as a kid and it was gray.

Earlier I asked about HD, but it hasn't been confirmed or denied yet.  Will we see ESB-R in HD?  I am very much looking forward to the regular ESB in HD with the color correction and don't mind if ESB-R is only SD, but just asking... :-)

I am all for the green lasers.  The Rebellion has red lasers, the Empire has green lasers.  Simple as that.

Ok, it's not that simple.  In space, the Empire has green lasers.  The storm troopers shoot red lasers, and the Sith carry red light sabers (and Luke had a green one in ROTJ).  Now we need Star Wars ANH Revisited Revisited to fix these anomalies.  ;-)

In all seriousness, the AT-AT's are much larger than hand-held weapons and deserve the green lasers in my opinion.

Adywan (or anyone who knows) when doing ESB revisited, is the source material HD or SD?  In other words, will we see an HD version of ESB Revisited?

Thanks!

Mike

Hi adywan!  Thanks for doing this.  The sample and screenshots look incredible!  I am really looking forward to the finished product.  Please don't rush it and make sure you are happy with it before uploading because I am sure this will be by far the best release out there for a long time.

I am not sure I understand why the newer AC3 track is an issue, but it would be cool if there was a way to make it available along with the Laserdisc (if there is any advantage over the newer AC3) and commentary tracks (as long as having that many tracks doesn't take away from the picture quality ; you could uber-compress the commentary track if it helped).  I am guessing the cuts for Greedo are causing the issue, but I have no idea.  Anyway, I will be extremely happy with just the picture difference alone and the sound is just gravy.

I signed up with a news service just for this!  Can't wait!

Thanks!
Mike
