Heee!!!! HAW! I am in hog heaven right now.

Why the hell is a Halo movie even being made? It's one-player mode has always sucked due to crap level design and cruddy storyline. There hardly is a storyline in Halo 1 or 2. And what's there is nothing special. The only people who would see it are Xbox owners (I am one, just so you know), and they already know the 'storyline'.

Don't get me wrong, though. AWESOME and well-balanced multiplayer game (at least the first one is, the second one is a little off). I believe they should have based the single-player campaign on the multiplayer levels. I only ever use it as target practice, anyway...

Kick-ass horror movies
Time
Are you KIDDING me?! I mean, I thought it was a good movie, and it certainly succeeded in scaring the living hell out of me, but to watch it OVER AND OVER AGAIN because you ENJOY it?! That's crazy. I could see it *maybe* once a year, tops. After which, I'd need a few weeks to recover...

But by all means, whip out the popcorn and go for it, if that's what you're into!

I hate horror movies, but The Mothman Prophecies honestly was so scary that it affected my life in a really negative way. I couldn't sleep without my curtains closed and my desk-lamp on for TWO MONTHS. The problem with this movie is that whether or not you believe it is true depends on whether or not you believe the eyewitness accounts of the people who said they saw it. If you haven't watched the movie, watch it and then watch the documentary on it afterwards. It's bloody scary.

Emphasis added. The Dreamcast did very well in Japan (it even had a re-release last year I think), but U.S. sales weren't enough to keep Sega of America in the hardware business. They lost hundreds of millions of dollars. The Dreamcast's failure in the U.S. is the primary reason Sega is now a third-party developer for other consoles.

I don't remember Dreamcast games being any more expensive than anything else out at the time. They just couldn't keep up with Sony. The PlayStation was a huge success and even a superior piece of hardware like the Dreamcast was no match for it. Once the PlayStation2 was announced, the Dreamcast market shriveled up and died.

When the console was discontinued, I picked up a spare at Toys R Us for $50 and about 30 or so games for $5 to $10 a pop. Most of them are still in the shrink wrap on the shelf. Not enough time in the day.

The thing is, it sold 3 million within the first few weeks, and broke sales records. It was when the PS2 came out, and all the third parties jumped onto the bandwagon and abandoned the machine. I know in Australia, it did really poor, because the games that were coming out in America were not coming out here, and it had ONE advertisement on TV upon launch and none after that.

I have to agree, although I'd go further to say that post-Megadrive, Sega was the most underrated console company in the biz. Sony were businessmen, and I still respect Nintendo as games-makers, but Sega never got consumer support for innovative games. I own a Megadrive, Saturn and a Dreamcast - and I thought that the last two were SUPREMELY overrated. The Saturn had some of the best games I've ever played EVER, and I could get them all for $20 Australian no probs. The Dreamcast had an awesome line-up of games - I honestly believe it failed because of a general bias towards the 'Playstation' brand name. In fact, I think the Saturn could have beaten the PSX if it had only been advertised. The general consensus over here was that it was just 'crap'. End of story. Whenever I asked someone to tell me why, they could never tell me, because they never played it - they just said something about it not being on TV or not being as popular...

I love those retro games they were for there time so advanced, even though the games of today are so so more advanced technically i actually find some of these "older" games more fun to play.

The Megadrive had Road Rash 1-3 on it. I borrowed the third one off a mate for a few months, it was pretty fun, but I've only played the other two on emulators. I thought every Road Rash game beyond the Megadrive sucked big time...

Well, for months they sometimes do, ichigatsu and stuff, but...

I know, it's confusing watching Japanese TV, seeing the arabic numbers, and still hearing them say it in Japanese. I'm like, 'hey, that's not 'ichi', that's 'one'!'

But many of them have been brought up on it, so it's completely normal for them.

What are your 10 best/worst character names from the SW movies?
Time
Hmmm...some cool names:

Obi-wan Kenobi, Lando Calrissean, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Anakin/Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, Aayla Secura, Qui-Gon Jinn (even though the character was redundant), Darth Sidious, Princess Leia Organa, Wedge, Dak, Bib Fortuna, Salacious Crumb, Artoo Detoo, See Threepio, Greedo, Sebulba (albeit another useless character in a useless podrace), Admiral Ackbar, Darth Tyrannus (if only they SAID the name!).

Some dud names:

Nute Gunray, Jar Jar Binks, Count Dooku (perhaps if it was Count Doku, it might've sounded cool and Japanese - but then, why the hell are there Counts in the SW universe?), Boss Nass (here's an idea: ditch the Gungans!), Watto, Darth Maul (but I must say, it's difficult to come up with alternatives), Shmi Skywalker (I probably hate this name the most, reminds me of Captain Hook's right-hand man!), General Grievous, Commander Cody (probably third worst), Jango Fett (fourth worst, sounds like the name of a fruit bat), Elan Sleazebaggano (oh, I get it! He's a sleazebag!), Panaka.

Why do all the characters have to be named anyway? Why couldn't Elan Sleazebaggano simply be called 'Deathstick Dealer' or even better, be cut from the movie?! I have to defend the name of Padmé. Even though it sounds stupid coming from the characters' mouths, it comes from the Buddhist adage The jewel is in the lotus; the lotus being 'padmé' in its original language. So I kind of liked that there were still some Joseph Campbell references in the PT, even though GL seemed to still miss the point...

I read an article about it in the newspaper, and I finally figured out what that spaceship made of Lego was supposed to be. In any case, the premise of the movie has me interested, and I will probably go see it with my geeky friends (and maybe some hot chicks if they're game). Haven't seen a good sci-fi in a while (I don't like sci-fi's that get bogged down in techy details rather than concepts), so it should be good.

Star War, Episode III - Backstroke Of The West (part-finished release?)
Time
As if it's common practice for anyone to search for a thread before they post a topic anyway...if someone wants to talk about something, and it's only ever been discussed ages ago, then I think it's perfectly fine if the discussion is brought to the fore again. It just means that the topic's still relevant. And chances are, I'll want to talk about it. If you've discussed the topic before, then surprise, surprise, you don't actually HAVE to discuss it (you didn't even have to click the thread link). Just don't spoil it for the others who haven't searched through the entire history of threads in this forum and actually want to discuss it no matter how well tread the thread topic is.

I can too -- and I hate it!

WARNING: I wrote the rant below and realised it rambled on and didn't really get to the point. Read at your own risk!

Special effects shots are (or should be) used only when you can't actually do what it is you want shot. Effects shots should still seem natural within the context of the film. I mean, I obviously know that there aren't spaceships and that, but if they look real, then that's great. Suspension of disbelief! I mean, when I first saw ESB and saw Yoda, he was really there on Dagobah. Once the movie was over, well, yeah, he was a puppet, but I believed he was real. Special effects have done their job when you believe it's real. In my opinion, if there's CG in a movie, I don't want to know it. I don't want to be able to tell where the CG effects are. They should be seamless. I hate hearing "The effects in that movie were awesome!" If you noticed where the CG effects (or any special effects) were, they haven't done their job. If you lose that suspension of disbelief, then it's not real for you anymore. CG never seems to fit in because it's not real enough. It pulls me out of the film, and it's that much harder to enjoy.

Thanks for listening.

The quote was mine, but you didn't need that. I think you've hit the nail right on the head. I agree with you that essentially, CG fails to suspend disbelief if used frequently, and for long periods of time. That's why I prefer the performance of the puppet Yoda in ESB/ROTJ, and it's also why I think the use of animatronics is what should be looked into. I think that to an extent, it combines the rigid movement of machines with the fluid movement of CG.

Brosnan is no longer Bond, Daniel Craig is now Bond.
Time
For some reason, I liked Roger Moore best too. And I hated Sean Connery until he got older and did stuff like Indiana Jones and Finding Forrester. Having said that, I thought Brosnan was a pretty good choice. He did look rather Moore-ish (get it?!).

But on a side note, I've always hated James Bond movies. I hated the old ones because he's a womaniser. I hate the new ones because they're so damn predictable. And I know it's meant to be this way, but I think it gets past the point of satire, and actually becomes that annoying.

Anyway, carry on.

Episode I - Manga Comic.
Time

Have any of you guys read the Japanese comic version of Episode I?

I’m not sure if it’s even called ‘The Phantom Menace’ (all I remember is seeing the title Star Wars: EPISODE I). I found two issues of it at my local library, and it seems that in its cartooney-ness, the movie works a lot better. And I believe the script was used verbatim, and Jar Jar still seemed less annoying and more like a Mexican compadré. It was written in English, but the author had a Japanese name.

Has anyone seen this stuff before? And if so, do you know if he did EPs II and III as well?
