Modified from its original version
Time
It's probably because Lucas owns the film, so he has his own permission to alter the film or whatever. A lot of other directors don't own the films they've directed in the past. That's why a lot of directors that would like to alter a few things in their past movies don't - because they don't own them, the company does - they simply can't. And so when they do get permission, we get Director's Cuts.

Inserting deleted scene of Yoda's exile into ANH??
Time
I'm sorry, but it's a bad idea. This way, Yoda is no longer a surprise Jedi Master in ESB (although watching the prequels first would spoil this anyway), he's only in exile for two years, and there's no explanation for wherever the hell he was for the 20 years between III and IV. And anyone watching that scene in ANH for the first time would be thinking something along the lines of WHAT THE FUCK?! for the rest of the film.

HC receives Razzie© nomination for Worst Supporting Actor
Time
Has anyone seen The Virgin Suicides? It has both Hartnett AND Christensen. Actually a really good film, though. Christensen is only a bit part in 3 different scenes, and he's pretty young too.

Every Razzie nomination deserved it really, but I thought that GL should have got one for Worst Director, easily. If anyone doubted it after EPII, they were just kidding themselves - Lucas is a poor director, we're just lucky that ANH turned out so brilliantly.

HC is the supporting actor because he's not the big name on the bill - Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid is. That's why GL tried to get Ian nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards. I'm not sure how much screen time Anakin and Obi get in EPIII, but that might also have a bit to do with it.

New tactic for petitioning for the OOT?
Time
I would definitely not recommend involving Lucas' kids or family in this, that's kind of intrusive and damaging to the cause, IMHO. Maybe writing to Spielberg is alright, but making his friends our messenger boys seems kind of presumptuous. I think the only angle you could pull is a profit-angle. Convince someone in power that it is financially viable to release the OOT.

But media support would certainly give creedence to our cause.

I think, however, that we will need to wait until people are thinking about Star Wars again (for instance, next year will be an anniversary) to generate dialogue on this in the general public.

"Rise, Lord Vader!" - my vision of ROTS
Time
I like the ideas you've put forward, but I don't know about your dialogue. Then again, I've rewritten the screenplays to Episodes I and II and I'm not sure I like my own dialogue. It's difficult to write.

I'll be finishing my rewrite of Episode III when I get home from the US (I'm in Seattle now and I live in Australia).

The idea that I like the most is Anakin having to harness the dark side of the Force to sustain himself. Although, I would have done it all in a slightly different order.

- Obi-wan dismembers/mortally wounds Anakin on the volcanic planet.
- Obi-wan returns to his ship (I don't know if it works to have Padme there or not), is alerted to approaching vessels.
- Obi-wan leaves to evade ships that he thinks are looking for him. Obi-wan escapes.
- Palpatine arrives in one of said ships. He finds Anakin, dying.
- He tells Anakin that he must harness his anger and hatred to sustain himself.
- Anakin sustains himself with his dark power.
- Palpatine takes Anakin somewhere where they can operate on him.
- Anakin is given the suit and a name. Darth Vader. (that whispering thing was a good idea, I think).
- His new dependence on the dark side effectively kills his old self.

Or perhaps Vader's name doesn't need to be said at all, and it can be merely implied that he adopts the name Vader over time. But I do think that Anakin probably should have became Vader upon being roboticised to give weight to Obi-wan's claims that he is more machine than man, twisted and evil. Obi-wan kind of implies there that his dark power is at least partly attributable to his inhumanity (although, in a way, Luke disproves this in turning him back). But one thing's for sure, Obi-wan's OT monologue left no room for a Darth Vader that wasn't robotic.

Empire Mag's Greatest Films of All-Time (2 SW films in Top 10, guess which two?)

I believe that movies like Pulp Fiction and possibly Fight Club will stand the test of time, but I don't think Fight Club or LOTR deserve to be in the Top Ten. As said before, movies like Psycho, Casablanca, Metropolis, etc. deserve a higher than those movies. Shawshank Redemption at No. 1? I dunno, it has been one of my favourite movies in the past, but it doesn't seem like a groundbreaking classic. It all depends on the criteria and such.

EDIT: Not to mention the fact that ESB beats Shawshank hands down!

Joss Whedon's Greedo Revenge

Yeah, I saw Serenity pretty much on the recommendation of the guys on this board, and I loved it. It really felt like a GOOD Star Wars movie - that is to say, GL should have used a similar approach in creating the prequels - characterisation, characterisation, characterisation dammit!

I have since seen a few episodes of Firefly here and there on the SciFi channel here (I'm currently in America on a holiday), and it's pretty good - but I guess I find it easier to sit through a movie than to sit through back to back episodes with commercials and cliffhangers...

I am definitely hanging out for a sequel to the movie. I hope the powers that be realise how many people love this franchise.

Lucas and CGI in the Prequels
Time
If I remember correctly, they used animatronics (machines & CG) for Jurassic Park, and went all-out CG in The Lost World. To begin with, the texture of a real-life object will ALWAYS look more realistic than a CG texture IMHO because it has infinite detail. Look at the skin on the back of your hand for a second and see how much detail is in that. Go outside and look at the grass in a field, or the branch of a pine tree. INFINITE detail, right down to a molecular level. Detail as far as the human eye can see.

Secondly, a major criticism I point at CG characters and creatures in movies is that they move too fluidly to be real creatures with real skeletons. In many ways, living creatures are like machines in that we are skeletal frames covered with skin. Our skin stretches and moves around our skeleton, but it is not completely fluid. Our movement, which is made possible by our brain and then our muscles, is limited to our skeletons. Humans and animals do not move with complete fluidity, they move like pieces of machinery moving in perfect unison. That is to say that there is a machine-like 'jerky' quality to it. THAT is why I believe animatronics looks more realistic than CG alone.

A Deep, Abiding Emptiness

Something has changed with me today.

I went into a book store during my lunch hour. One of the ones that is a national chain...one that sells a lot of other stuff besides books. As I was walking the ailes, nothing appealed to me. I thought this was strange because I am a book junkie. I can't get enough, and I've got books to keep me reading for the next 10 years at home. I perused just about every rack in the store, hoping to find something that would strike my fancy. Nothing.

Ok, how about the calendars? No. Knick-knacks? Nada. Candy/coffee/cakes? Nope. I realized that I am empty. The accumulation of "things" in my life has lead me to a dead end. Nothing I look at today can give me purpose, or fill the void I'm feeling right now.

This began, I think, as a result of me doing some reading on Pope John Paul II on Wikipedia today. When I look at his accomplishments, at the life he lived, and the difference he made, it makes me ashamed to think that I have done nothing to help ease some of the suffering in this world.

As a Christian, I believe that this world will never be "right" until the second coming (I'm only stating my belief...not inviting an argument over religion), and that I have not lived my life according to my faith. I'm feeling a deep yearning to do something about it. To try to help in some way, but I'm not sure how. I feel lost.

I am a Christian too. I think the best advice I can give you is to pray about it. Ask God for some guidance and hopefully he will give it to you in some way. I believe that God has already shown you something in the bookstore. All I know is that if you don't ask, you won't get, so ask God for help. I think what it was was God convicting you, so don't let guilt weigh you down, just ask God to forgive you and help you change. He only convicts us 'cause he cares about us, and he wants us to have a fulfilling life. He doesn't want you to feel guilty about it. He doesn't want you to have a void in your life. He wants to be part of your life, and he wants to help you live it to the full.

I think the problem with being a Christian in a capitalist society is that we can forget that everything that we've been given is not ours. It's only temporary, and somewhere along the line, it all came from God. And like the three servants with the talents, our master has given us gifts and resources to use, and one day he will return to see what we have done with those resources. I think that includes money and material possessions. So we should be responsible with what we have, but also generous, so that we don't value it higher than we should, and because we have it in perspective: money and material possessions will not go with us when we die. You have come to a very important crossroad in your life. You're coming to a realisation of what's really important. And what's really important is getting right with God, doing good things for other people, and filling that void in your life. Work on the first two, and the other will come. I hope that helps, bro.

IGN is on our side.
Time
Here's a quote I found on IGN, reviewing the new DVD set coming out:

"The only possible way a smaller collection might prove a valuable investment is if Lucas loosed his stranglehold on the true "original" films (sans CGI enhancements, etc.) and issued them in a succinct sister set to last year's deluxe Trilogy DVDs."

What is your favorite Star Wars sound effect?
Time
I really should have voted for R2-D2's beeps. He's like a robot parrot. Every sound that he makes is perfectly indicative of the situation he's in. Like when they're entering Dagobah's atmosphere in ESB.

As it was, I voted for the lightsaber sounds, because I imitate them a lot. And then I realised I imitated R2's beeps and whistles just as often, if not more...

But you know, as well as I, that there HAS to be more to it than that. Characters don't simply cease to exist before, after, and between each film, therefore the EU is allowable.

Of course. That school of thought has led to FANTASTIC cinematic moments. I'm thinking:

Scarlett
Return to Oz
Caddyshack II
The Return of Jafar
More American Graffiti
Speed 2: Cruise Control
The Color of Money
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2
EDIT: Grease 2 ... don't forget that crapfest either

I'm specifically leaving out franchise-killers like Batman & Robin or Rocky V and focusing on "blood-from-a-stone" first sequels that never should have happened. Any more dead horses we can beat?

I can't wait for that sequel "The Passion of the Christ: God's Vengeance." Throw in a resurrected Judas in a robot suit doing space battle with his old nemesis The Nazarene and it'll outgross the original.

Come on, dude. Is that really fair? Listing the names of crappy sequels is like shooting apples in a barrel! Surely, the Empire Strikes Back must have been one of the most successful sequels ever. Your point still stands, though. That's why there are backstories in movies, and people's imaginations to fill in the blanks. In fact, people's imaginations filling the blanks is the reason that EU exists.

I kinda respect EU, though usually not all of it. Mostly because it has influenced things in the movies. Like Coruscant. Can't think of anything else, though...well, at least not in the OT.

Fondest Memory from the OT Days
Time
I live in Brisbane (East Coast of Australia, capital of Queensland), and I went on a holiday with my family around Australia at the age of 7. It was the 1990/1991 Christmas holidays, and we were visiting a family of friends in Perth (West Coast of Australia, capital of Western Australia). Their kids were crazy about Star Wars - kept singing the theme song, going on about this 'Darth Vader' fella, and lightsabers, etc. Anyway, they basically forced me and my little brother to watch it on the second last day we were there. I loved it. It blew me away, and I could understand their obsession from then on. I didn't have time to see Empire Strikes Back, which they told me a bit about, but they didn't even mention Return of the Jedi AT ALL. I didn't know it existed. For the remainder of the trip, the whole 8000 km back home, I was left wondering what was going to happen next. I was really excited. Funnily enough, in this place with really tall tree-houses, another kid that I met started talking to me about all the cool stuff in the Empire Strikes Back. And then he told me about 'the third one', which I didn't even believe existed. He kept going on about Ewoks, Imperial Walkers and a green lightsaber and I didn't believe him. Nonetheless, I took it on board. Anyway, soon after getting home (probably some 19 days later), Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back came on TV, so we recorded it (since then I was dumb enough to record over them with the '97 SEs). When I heard Vader claim to be Anakin's father, I was blown away. I didn't believe him. I thought he was lying. Well anyway, seeing as it never came on TV till a lot later, I was left wondering whether or not there even was a 'third one'. I was left on this cliffhanger ending for two years: is Vader Luke's father, does Han Solo live, does Luke become a Jedi? Then, when I was in the video shop, I found it: Return of the Jedi. I HAD to see it. I rented it out, and I was blown away. I couldn't believe it. Vader WAS Luke's father. Yoda dies. Jabba was cool. The forest moon of Endor was cool. Luke was Leia's sister! Vader sacrifices himself to save Luke from the Emperor. Awesome. I watched it over and over again. Then it finally came on TV, so I could record it and watch it whenever I wanted. Then the '97 SEs came out (which, funnily enough, I wasn't pissed off about) and I saw the new 'A New Hope' at the cinema, and my brother bought the VHS set.
