Saving Star Wars

Yeah, I know, but it's not always in my mind, you know? Like if I'm singing with a rock band at a local pub, I'm not really in 'geek mode' as it were, and noone coming to see me would suspect it at all. It's just times when I talk about this kinda stuff (or if I'm playing laser-tag/videogames) that I really know I am a geek.

Why Boba Fett is now bunk

That must be the first time I've seen someone proud to have the word 'wank' to their name. Only in America...

That's really disappointing about the chess thing, but on the other hand, I really can't think of an appropriate way of doing it...

Having Luke and Leia as King and Queen kinda highlights those incestual undertones of ANH and ESB. A few of my own ideas for a SW chess set:

- Death Stars or AT-ATs as rooks for the Empire.
- Yavin watch-towers as rooks for the Rebellion.
- The Imperial Guard (those red guys in ROTJ) as bishops for the Empire.
- Perhaps Darth Maul and Boba Fett as knights for the Empire(?) - or maybe Maul and Dooku?
- In all honesty, the Emperor and Darth Vader as King and Queen is kind of dodgy and weird, but with the absence of female leadership in the Empire, there's really no other option. To have Darth Vader as the most powerful Empire piece on the board is pretty appropriate, though.
- Stormtroopers as pawns is a no-brainer, as with Rebellion soldiers seen in the opening of ANH.
- Han and Chewie would make appropriate knights methinks, but it also makes sense to have Jedi Knights as knights. The only appropriate Jedi Knights to use in that context, however, are completely irrelevant and insignificant to the greater Star Wars story - the only notable Jedi that isn't a master is Luke Skywalker, and really, he should be the most important piece - the king. The fact that Jedi and Sith are both religious warrior codes makes things complicated.
- Yoda and Obi-wan as bishops is a great idea, as they really are the 'wise old wizards' of Star Wars.
- And here we are left with that incestuous duo of Luke and Leia as king and queen - impossible to avoid! It would've made perfect sense pre-ROTJ, but not now!

Saving Star Wars
Time
Funny how the film portrays stealing a prequel script as a bad thing.

If I made a film of the same name, the plot would go something like this:

- A commando is sent back in time on a special secret mission - to prevent the prequels from ever being made.
- The commando goes back in time, fighting his way through armies of yes-men to reach the diabolical stronghold known only as "The Ranch".
- An epic battle takes place between the commando and George Lucas until finally the commando executes his deadly ninja-move, rendering Lucas mute and handless.
- Alternative ending: the two combatants put down their weapons as they discuss what made the Original Trilogy so phenomenal in the first place. Lucas agrees to burn his working draft of "The Phantom Menace" and starts again, employing the help of Kurtz, Kershner, and Kasdan to create a new script.
- The Star Wars Universe is safe once again.

EDIT: I'm a geek.

Inserting deleted scene of Yoda's exile into ANH??

Honestly, I think that everything that George Lucas says, particularly with regards to his 'original vision', needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Maybe a tablespoon of salt.

In many ways he made life more difficult for himself creating contrived PT-OT links that familiarised the two trilogies, but at the same time greatly disrupted their continuity. Anakin creating C3P0 is a HUGE continuity problem, and it really only served to bring a familiar Star Wars character into the prequels. In fact, the droids being in the PT (with the exception of perhaps seeing them at the end of ROTS with Antilles) at all is probably the biggest continuity problem of them all. My theory is that George planned on embodying all the comic relief within the character of Jar Jar Binks, and the overwhelming negative response to him meant that he needed to embody the comic relief within some other characters - tried and true like-able characters - he no longer wanted to risk creating an all-new character for comic relief. I think that the thing he missed altogether is that the humour in the OT was divided amongst all the main characters - there was Han Solo with his wise cracks, Leia with her bratty attitude, Yoda with his flashlight hijinx, 3P0 and R2 of course, and I even thought there was a funny interplay between 3P0 and Chewbacca (starting with "let the wookie win" and culminating in ESB with his reconstruction and confinement to Chewie's back). Having one court jester in a movie is a very hit and miss strategy, and more often than not, such a character becomes the object of the audiences scorn rather than their laughter (think about when they introduced Scrappy-Doo to Scooby-Doo).

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time
I thought that Ninja Gaiden on X-Box was the best effort at marrying Next-Gen graphics and 3D movement with real difficulty akin to the 'good old days'. That and the game was just plain awesome in every respect. I ended up finishing it 3 times, twice with all the scarabs, but cracking those first few levels took a LONG time. I was even frustrated and gave up for probably a month, but once you get out of ancient Japan, the game starts moving along and gets really exciting.

The save points are sufficiently distanced from each other as well - so when you die, there actually is a penalty, there is some part of the game that you have to do all over again upon dying, if you get my meaning.

What scene in the (O-)OT do you hate/dislike the most?
Time
I must admit that I thought (when I was 7, watching it for the first time) that Star Wars really picked up the pace once they entered the Mos Eisley Cantina.

Does anybody know if the Vader-shuttle stuff was screwed up in the '97 SE? I don't remember ever having a problem with it, really.

You are free to assume that I hate ANH and ROTJ SEs with a vengeance.

Jabba on the Dais!!!
Time
Regardless, this has been one of the funniest threads I have ever read in my entire life! Thanks guys - if I was drinking milk, it would have come out my nose!

"JABBA THE HUTT?! WHAT THE F---?!"

My response exactly, and then when you went on about his little smiling head mocking you LOL!

"ON THE DAIS, ON THE DAIS - JABBA ON THE DAIS!"

I didn't even know what a dais was before I watched that! Freakin' hilarious! It made it seem really significant that he was sitting on it!

Unorthodox Star Wars Beliefs
Time
I'm pretty sure he said that "balance" was only achieved at the end of ROTJ, not ROTS, am I right?

The Sith were clearly on top of things by the conclusion of ROTS, but I believe the "balance of the Force" was manifested in Vader/Anakin himself, i.e. when Darth Vader found the Jedi Anakin Skywalker deep within himself and killed the Emperor to save his son.

The balance was achieved when the Sith were destroyed, and overthrown by Jedi who were compassionate and selfless (unlike the Jedi Order of the Old Republic, which seemed to deny themselves their "humanity", which I believe was something that Anakin struggled with).

Yeah, to think that all of the main characters in the OT could have sat down and had a one-hour chat that could have solved them a lot of problems (and pretty much destroy the story too, mind you).

- Chewy knows Yoda
- R2-D2 knows Obi-wan, Anakin, and Padme. He probably knew about Luke and Leia's birth and separation too (was he present during the delivery? He was at least on-board the Tantive IV when they were discussing it).

Really, R2 is the most guilty party in this universe-shrinking business, and probably the basis for all continuity errors in the PT.
