Mario vs Sonic

Dude, you can't argue Mario's superiority on that basis - Sonic too can *become* invulnerable, in fact, he can become Supersonic or Hypersonic depending on which game you play; he can turn himself into a fireball, which I believe is far cooler than throwing one (which looks more like a pellet or birdseed anyway), bla bla bla we could discuss powerups all day. Either way, it makes no difference as to which character is inherently better. But I will argue this:

I believe that the 2D Sonic games, on the whole (including Game Boy Advance iterations), are superior in the way of level design, gameplay innovation, and general excitement, in comparison to the 2D Mario games, on the whole (although I still agree that they are fun and titles like SMB3 are classic). I'm talking strictly about the platformers here, and not the spin-offs. As far as spin-offs go, I'm pretty sure we can all agree that Super Mario Kart is the best (can we?). Sonic 3, I believe, was a crowning achievement in terms of REAL, co-operative two player action. Sonic 2 offered some awesome two player competition in itself, with the two player versus mode. But aside from that, level devices like secret caves, cannons, water-slides, half-pipes, pinball paddles, among a whole host of other things just made the game different and fresh. This is all subjective, of course.

As far as 3D goes, I believe that Mario made a smooth transition whilst Sonic has not. I, for one, LOVED Sonic Adventure at first, but I have to admit that my experience with the game wasn't nearly as awe-inspiring as the first time I played Mario 64 in Japan. Things like collision detection errors and other bugs kind of detracted from my experience, but most of all, they've kind of changed the Sonic character into what we've seen in the cartoons. He talks too much, he has too many friends - he has lost all the mystery and attitude that made him so cool in the first place. Now he is like some loud-mouthed, annoying American (no offense to Americans that aren't loud-mouthed or annoying). Sonic Team is clearly going crazy if you ask me, putting out lowest-common-denominator crap like Shadow the Hedgehog (an evil Sonic walking around with a gun?!) and Sonic Riders, while Nintendo has been putting out titles like Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario, Smash Brothers, Mario Party, etc.

So, props to Nintendo for inventiveness, but I do like the original Sonic character better, and I hope for a return to form from Sonic Team. A 2D platformer maxing out some next-gen hardware would be awesome.

Quit whining, make your own threads, or just go away. Sheesh.

Blog away, HLF. At first, I thought it would be good for you to start a new thread sans AWK and battlewars, but it seems there are some second bananas coming to replace them.

I can't believe the implication here! Me and Nanner Split resuming the torch from AWK and battlewars?! You bastard! Have you even read our posts?!

Well, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were joking...but watch your step

An r-rated TMNT would kick ass!!! I see the dvds all the time at Wal-Mart for $5-$10

Damn, I should've got some while I was in the U.S. Alas, Wal-Mart is nowhere to be found (is that such a bad thing? I dunno)!

I never watched the anime version of TMNT (or was it called 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles'?) - but the impression I got was that it was weird-ass and they had mechs and crap...

Yeah, I should still have the leg of my April too, my sister (when she was a baby - LONG time ago) ripped her leg off, so the connector bit is stuck in there, and the leg is without a connector...

I'll have to keep an eye out for that Turtles DVD. I should probably start building a DVD collection soon (all my classic movies are trapped inside VHSs!).

BTW, if John Woo is directing it, it should be pretty damn cool. But they really should use the Henson costumes from the first one - they were right on.

I love the new ones, and even though they don't compare to my memory of the old series, I've stumbled over some footage here and there on my old VHSs (one of them was at the end of Superman!), and I can confirm that the new ones are better in a few ways:

- The characterisations are more complex. In the original cartoons Leonardo is the gullible one that points out the obvious, Raphael is the smart-ass with the wisecracks, Donatello is the computer science nerd, and Michelangelo is the party dude. In the new cartoons Leonardo is the spiritual one who enjoys solitude and struggles with his role as leader, Raphael is the brooding, passionate one who struggles with his anger, Donatello is still the intellectual one, but often he excludes Michelangelo from his experiments, even though Michelangelo (while being impulsive and foolhardy) is actually smarter than everyone gives him credit (he has often used his brain to get the whole crew out of dicey situations).

- The drawings and animation are better (IMHO, at least). It looks grittier in a more consistent style.

- The storylines are tighter and better conceived. Sometimes the stories go completely crazy, but no crazier than the old ones, and with more plot-twists. My favourite episodes were probably the earliest ones, but the cool thing with the whole series is that it leaves things for a while, then comes back and builds on them when you least expect it.

- It effectively combines the stories of the old cartoons, the comics, and the movies. I think by 'rebooting' the series (a la DC Comics' Infinite Crisis) they had the chance to marry all the elements coherently.

Having said that, the original series was very cool - I watched it every weekday at 4:30pm after school - and I was pissed when they finally took it off the air. I've got about 50 action figures still as well, complete with all the weapons (though suffering the casualty of April O'Niell, who is missing a leg due to my sister's antics as an infant). I LOVE the TMNT movie (the first one, not the rest), it is a tight, 1hr 20m piece of cinematic gold. It is always in my regular viewing rotation as of a few years ago when I dug it up again (I went over all my friend's houses and showed it to them - we loved it). Has it been released on DVD? My video's sound quality is really starting to suffer...

I'm up for a new TMNT movie, so long as it's as well-done as the first one.

How good was it when Chief Sterns asks the gang members at the end if they knew anything? One of them pipes up and says "Check out the East warehouse over on Lairdman Island, you'll find your answers there..." Did anybody get that reference?

End of SE ROTJ...
Time
Look, if anyone wants to challenge me on this force-ghost bullshit, I'll take them. According to the PT, Qui-Gon taught Yoda AND Obi-wan how to retain their identities in the Force (which I will explain later, is to cover discontinuities created by Lucas in the first place) AFTER Anakin became Darth Vader. Anakin Skywalker NEVER learned how to retain his identity in the Force. Therefore, according to this inadequate PT explanation, Anakin shouldn't have appeared at the end of Return of the Jedi AT ALL. Case closed.

The only reason GL needed to devise this whole 'retaining one's identity in the Force' BS is because he had the stupidity to show Qui-Gon's body after his death. If he had followed the pattern that he had followed with all Jedi deaths prior to that, he would have made Qui-Gon's body disappear upon being struck by Maul's lightsaber - no explanation required. But instead, he tried to be consistent with his mistake and had all these other Jedi die with their bodies intact in AOTC and ROTS (Uh, see, I MEANT to do it that way...). See, here's the thing - When Darth Vader struck Obi-wan with his lightsaber on the Death Star platform in ANH, OBI-WAN DIED. And when a Jedi dies, he disappears. When Yoda lay down on his death-bed, drew his last breath, said his last words, THEN disappeared - guess what - HE DIED TOO. Of old age, believe it or not! When Darth Vader listened to his son's pleas, and found the man that was his father deep down inside of him (Anakin Skywalker), he threw the Emperor down the shaft, and following that, HE DIED! So here we have 3 Jedi dying in the OT, and all three of them become apparitions at the end of ROTJ AS THEY WERE WHEN THEY DIED. Prior to the PT, all Jedi were SUPPOSED to disappear when they died, Lucas just stuffed it up. No BS explanations required. Case closed.

Schumaker needs to get back to his roots. I'm hoping for a sequel to D.C. Cab myself.

Meanwhile, killing off MJ would disservice the story. I kid about wanting that a lot because of my disdain for Kirsten Dunst ... or what she's become since the success of Spidey 1. All I have to say is she'd better show up with her game face on this time because she was the lone sour note in the otherwise pitch-perfect Spidey 2. And I'm not the only one who noticed.

Whenever any actor or actress gets too big for their britches, the Great Unwashed LOVES to see them get taken back down. Affleck. Halle Berry. Tom Cruise. Val Kilmer. All of these guys got their ego confused with their paycheck at some point. Kirsten's been teetering on that cliff herself.

But Val Kilmer has almost completely disappeared from the radar, while Affleck, Berry and Cruise most of all are still reigning. Too bad, because I always enjoyed Kilmer's performancese more than theirs. I'm almost tempted to pop the question of Cruise VS Kilmer or Affleck VS Kilmer in a fist fight, but to what avail I do not know.

Well, now Kilmer's actually starring in interesting movies instead of braindead blockbusters.

Agreed, Brock isn't a scrawny kid...but ten bucks says the suit is gonna be CGI and he'll be gigantic.

Even so, Grace doesn't have the presence and intensity that Brock needs to be a threat.

Besides, shouldn't they focus on finishing the storyline with Harry becoming the 2nd Green Goblin before jumping onto another villain? They can only drag out this build up to Harry becoming GG2 for so long before it becomes obnoxious.

I think they might be planning on making him the Hobgoblin rather than GG2...just my thoughts. But yes, the build-up was definitely there in S2 - I could even see it coming in the first film.

I agree 100%. And this is coming from a kid who watched the Adam West shows religiously (what was I thinking?!). Burton's take on Batman was simply awesome; the way that he fleshed out the themes...man, I could just watch those films over and over.

I bet Keaton didn't want to do any more after Returns because Burton wasn't on it.

And I have to say, I thought Begins was a pretty solid Batman film. Looking forward to seeing what they do next...
