My goodness! I just read The Long Halloween today myself. I must say, it took a while to draw me in, but as a whole, this book just blew me away.

But I did one better today, IMHO. I also read A Superman for All Seasons. One of the greatest comic books I've ever read in my life. No exaggeration. The art was breathtaking, the writing approach brilliant, and the story was just plain great.

Tim Sale - check it out - one of the pest set of two comic book pages I've ever seen/read:

http://superman.ws/superman-comics/about/seasons/sunset.jpg

A quote from Loeb about this spread: For example, we always knew that when Clark left Smallville at the end of the first chapter, Pa Kent was going to be out in the field, and they were going to be looking at a sunset. Tim had drawn two characters in the foreground, a little bit of grass, and a line across the horizon, and sent it in. And of course, I had the audacity to write Clark saying, "Do you ever get tired of looking at that?" and Pa replying, "Nope. Never have, never will." And that was it! When DC saw that, they said, "Where's the rest of the page?" The rest of the page was Bjarne Hansen. It's a wonderful, magical moment, just like Tim knew that it was going to be.

Loeb's choice of inner voices for each season just added so much depth to the story and the characters. If you're a Superman fan, go read it now. I think it's the closest thing to a "Superman: Year One" you can get.

Something like that would never be published today as its a different time, but its still likely that a comic with superman holding the american flag on the cover would be. You are right, something like that would never be published today because current attitudes have changed. For the same reason, perhaps the 'American Way' slogan may also need some revision. I know that in America rigth now, patriotism is a big thing, and rightly so. In fact, I admire America's national pride and I think England could benefit from some of that. However, from an international marketing P.O.V, I understand the change. I agree the line should have been omitted altogether though instead of being watered down into a rather lame joke. Who know though - perhaps in context the line will work.

what have they done to the New Doctor Series? I have been watching the American version on the Sci Fi channel.
Being an American, you probably won't spot what I am talking about, because it is done to cater to America and make Americans like it better, but as an English person watching an English show, I cringe every time something is added or said to make the show more American friendly. British humour, British story telling, etc are different to American styles, and many nuances and subtle things are lost on the Americans (my wife is American and she is living proof of this - I do not think it is the same the other way round though because we (the english and the rest of the world) are much more exposed to American media. In fact, perhaps this is also a factor in why our TV and movies are beginning to seem 'more American'. For example, in Doctor Who, some of the British slang is changed and there are a lot more Americanisms added. There are a lot more American characters (I don't know if you have reached the Captain Jack episodes yet, but he is an American guy - I actually quite like his character so I am not grumbling about having an American actor on board, just pointing it out). The whole feel of the show is a lot more 'American' in an attempt to make it blend in more with American TV and not stand out as some obscure British thing that the general public won't want to see. You may also notice that the episodes are 45 minutes long (which means that, with commercials, they will be an hour in America). Doctor Who has ALWAYS been 30 minutes long, and the BBC does not show commercials so it was a perfect length, so this chnage has obviously been introduced to aid US sydication. However, I like longer episodes because you get more story, so again, I'm not complaining.

I'm having trouble explaining exactly what I mean, and as an American I imagine it will be very difficult for you to spot or understand exactly what I am saying, because the things I am talking about will not seem out of place to you because they are included to make the viewing experience less jarring for you, but just take my word for it - Doctor Who has been 'tweaked' to better suit America, and so have many, many other British things. I think we are slowly losing our identity. Oh well.

P.S That British Superman really does look like a dick. I'm surprised he's not drinking a cup of tea with his little finger sticking out.

P.P.S Warb, the second series of the New Doctor Who is starting here later this month, starring David Tennant as the new doctor.

Yes, it's true - we rock.

Same thing with Australian movies in the US - The Castle, a great Australian comedy (with its comedy based entirely in how ridiculously over-Australian the main characters are), had a lot of the jokes and slang changed for American audiences. I don't know whether or not American audiences found it funny or not, but Americans that I knew who visited here had a blast watching it in its purest form. The thing with some of these movies is, if you don't get the slang, you won't get the jokes - and in the case of The Castle - the slang was the joke. Of course, you Poms wouldn't have a problem with it, and nor do we with your stuff. Australians too are familiar with most forms of Western slang, due to frequent exposure to both American and British media (although a British ex-patriat in Australia recently invited me to his "gaff" which I could only determine from the context, meant his "house"!).

I've wondered recently if they made any changes to the American version of Wolf Creek - boy did that do wonders for Australia's tourism industry - now I don't even want to trek out to central Australia!

Raimi hasn't let me down. But bringing Gwen Stacy in at this time is bad mojo. It doesn't look like they have any plans of wrapping this up. I thought it was a trilogy - to end with III. Looks like money wins again, and I'm afraid the franchise will suffer for it. Everything has built up to Mary Jane. I can handle Harry as Green Goblin/Hobgoblin - but that should be the big end battle with an extra villain or two thrown in the mix. End battle. End of Oscorp. End of trilogy.

So does Mary Jane get wasted? I guess so. Weak way to end two movies of build-up.

But how bold would it have been to have her die in the first? Spiderman tries to choose both (the busload of people AND the main squeeze, that is), but fails with a tragic loss, making his final battle with GG all the more personal. Of course, in that case it would have made more sense to use Gwen Stacy...

Though, since I don't know anyone who else has a master replicas saber I don't have anyone to fight against, but those things are like indestructable (even though it obviously says THIS IS NOT A TOY on the side of the box). Bullshit. It's a toy and the only reason we are buying these sabers is because we want to beat each other senseless with them and not have the saber actually bend at the middle (I'm looking in your direction Mr. cheap plastic lightsaber).

That master replica saber is bitchin' though. I've been known to turn off all the lights in the house (except for varioius low lights), blast some Star Wars music, and fight invisable sith with that thing. (However once my aunt actually walked in on me twirling that thing around in my living room and the "Back to the Future" theme was blasting and said, "Are you so nerdily sophisticated that you have to play 2 trilogies at once?" I giggled.) It glows, it hums, it even has light travel up and down the shaft like a real saber - and in the dark it looks so damn cool. If you don't have one, get one.

Star Wars Kid: MKII.

I believe that a UMD movie (for PSP) costs about £20. Other than that, I can't really tell you how much games cost. I usually borrow PC games and I don't own a console.

Dude, you guys are getting ripped off big time! Twenty pounds for a UMD movie? They tend to run under 20 DOLLARS in the states. "Bill and Ted" cost me only $14.54 plus tax.

Electronics-wise, everything outside of the US and Japan is a rip-off.

Here it is:

http://theages.superman.ws/History/2000/ultimate.jpg

I thought it'd also be good to include a quote from Birthright writer, Mark Waid (and this is helpful to both Superman and Spiderman fans alike):

"We're hewing very closely to the basic character concepts as envisioned by Superman's creators - a champion of the weak and oppressed, a social crusader - and, without ever taking away from him that he's the best of the good guys.

"We tend to get ourselves into a trap with any long-running character that this or that is the 'right' version, accept no substitutes, but the wonder and magic of these guys is that they're stronger than that, more mythic.

"Who is the 'real' Batman? The current DC version? Sure, you can make a strong case for that. But what about the WB animated Batman? He's known worldwide by far more people than buy his comic every month. Or take Spider-Man? Was his first love Mary Jane Watson? About $400 million worth of ticket-buyers would say 'yes.'

"As long as the spirit of the character endures - as long as any story is told with love and respect for that character, as long as his basic concept hews true - how do details like that really matter? Did Superman land on Earth as an embryo or an infant or a toddler? What's Santa Claus's real name, Kris Kringle or Pere Noel?

"What 'becomes' the accepted Superman canon is beyond anyone's control. It's what the general public decides it is. Which is kind of my point - that, ultimately, it's more up to the readers than to the writers what to accept and what to reject. All we can do is interpret the legend in as exciting, modern and dynamic a way as we can envision - the rest is out of our control."

It should be noted that at the time this cover was made, America was at war with Japan. At the time, it was acceptable by Americans to call Japanese "Japs". If would be of course offensive to do so today.

Here I will disagree. Just because other countries don't have suffient Icons of their own does not automatically make our Icons, theirs. Please feel free to enjoy our Icons as much as you wish, but they are still ours.

Right on, Warbler. I think DAYV was right, we did have a pretty good debate, didn't we? I enjoyed it, and I think I learned a few things myself. How cool does that Commie Superman look? It reminds me of an impressive proposal that I've seen (and that was rejected by DC) to update Superman's costume. I'll see if I can find it and post it on here.

One can only hope that they will have a different voice for Venom as well.

So here's my question: now that Venom's coming, will we see Carnage later in the series?

Oooh...Carnage, that would be cool. Problem is, Spiderman's got such a huge rogues gallery that it would be near-impossible to do enough sequels to fit them in (at least, all the good ones).

Spidey villains that I'm yet to see that I want to see: Carnage, Venom, Hobgoblin - actually, that's about it! One more movie (S4) and I should be right...

Let me put that differently: which is more tragic, being powerless to save your loved ones (Batman) or having the power to save your loved ones but squandering it (Spider-Man)?

At first, I was gonna flat-out say Batman, but now that I've thought about the question in more detail - damn, it is a tough one indeed.

Conceptually, I think Spider-Man's tragedy was greater (being able to stop evil but not), but situationally, the slaughter of Wayne's parents before his eyes and being left with no parents/role models at all is more tragic in comparison, in that Peter Parker was old enough by then to look after himself. Overall, I think Batman's entire life is far more tragic as Peter Parker seems more well-adjusted to balancing his two lives, but in and of these two separate events (Uncle Ben's preventable death vs. Bruce's parents unpreventable deaths), Spider-Man's tragedy is greater...

Do you follow me?

Tell me, should we go back and cgi out the flag from this picture and instead add the flag of the UN just because it might offend nonAmericans?

Some good points overall, Warbler, but I still disagree with a few things, which is fine. I too am of the persuasion that the line should either be included in its full capacity or not at all. It is weak to dilute it. HOWEVER, I am still of the persuasion that the line is no longer relevant to the post-Crisis Superman (I don't think any of those comic covers were from anything after the 70s, remembering that some were anniversary issues), and is regarded as much cheesy as it is classic amongst even American comic fans. I myself am a huge Superman fan - I think he is one of, if not THE most conceptually rich character in comics - but I do not consider the line to be absolutely essential to a Superman movie, much less a comic.

And I still stand by Superman being a Kryptonian above all things. This is what gives him the responsibility he has.

I would be careful about the whole it's-American-made-so-you-don't-have-a-say idea. This is a can of worms best left unopened (or discussed in another thread). If you extend it to the world of Star Wars (in that it was made by Americans), my opinions (or perhaps anyone's other than Lucas') on the Original Trilogy are redundant. The fact is, America is the only superpower and the dominant source of entertainment media. That is to say that many of America's icons are the world's as well. People from all over the world leave their home countries to 'make it big' in their respective arts in the U.S., so to say that Americans are the only ones that have contributed to the Superman mythos (let alone Hollywood, etc.) I think is a bit of a blanket statement.

HSVIJ, I think there's another approach to Superman out there, and that is that Superman is intrinsically Superman (or Kal-El) while Clark Kent is the alter-ego. But not just a shell - Clark Kent is the side of Superman that is an alien trying to live/fit in as a human amongst other humans. He is like the ultimate immigrant (like his Jewish creators), bringing his contributions to society as Superman. I don't think it's so much a case of one or the other, but merely what the writer wishes to spend his/her time/pages expositing a particular story (i.e. do I want to write a story about Superman, or do I want to write a story about Clark Kent?). I feel that the first two Superman movies were as much about Clark Kent as they were about Superman, and I'm sure the screen time reflects this.
