I had another look at it this morning, and there is no actual dating on there per sé (as in, it doesn't have the month and year prominently displayed). The '1982' was written on the spine, and it's actually just a copyright - "(c)1982 Marvel Comics Group". So, it could well be that the comic was finished in 1982, then mass-produced and distributed from '83 onwards. On the inside page, it says that Marvel copyrighted it, and the "Federal Publishing Company Pty. Ltd." copyrighted it in 1985. This is probably because Marvel didn't have a subsidiary in Australia - and American copyrights aren't binding in Australia - so Federal Comics probably took the liberty of copyrighting it and distributing it in Australia.

There are a few interesting stories about Australian fast food copyrights that I know of, but that's a story for another thread...

But Batman is smart. Would he even allow Superman to get close enough to lay that one punch on him? I'm pretty sure that before any face-off, Batman would be well prepared. The example of him planting a bomb on himself and then telling Superman that he has planted a bomb on a citizen of Gothem and if Superman lays a finger on him the bomb will explode shows how smart batman is. I'm also pretty sure Bats would arm himself with some kryptinite if he knew a fight with Superman was imminetn, and I'm sure with Bruce Wayne's contacts, intelligence and finances he would have no trouble getting hold of kryptonite. But yeah Warbs, no doubt about it that in a straight man on man fight, Supes would kill bats in half a second.

Man, I love these 'who would beat who in a fight' discussions

In that case, who wants to start a Superman VS. Captain Marvel (Power of SHAZAM version) discussion?

Didn't Captain Marvel die of cancer or something?

Another deterrent to Superman winning is his 'no-kill' policy.

Violence in Video games a fad?
Time
I am living proof that violent video games do nothing to a healthy mind. I frequently play the likes of GTA:VC, Counterstrike, Virtua Cop 1 & 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2, etc., etc. And the only person I've ever had a punch-up with in my entire life is my younger brother. That's it.

Of course, I do think that a lot of games are getting ridiculous. Never liked Mortal Kombat or it's 50-gazillion variations. That 50 Cent game looks like a steaming pile of gangsta crap. I wouldn't find it hard to believe that there probably are kids out there who can't separate fact from fiction...

The thing is, conflict is the key to any good story or videogame (with a few obvious exceptions, like maybe Tetris), so chances are, there's gonna be fighting in some capacity.

Australia has three - ask the audience, phone a friend and 50:50. Now, when I was in America, I saw two versions, one with a female host and another with a male host - I was thinking perhaps that one was in New York and the other in LA or some kind of East Coast/West Coast thing. The fourth lifeline that I saw on the American ones (not sure which one) was a switch-the-question lifeline. Ring any bells?

Bikini MJ is only featured in the background of one panel. In any case, I don't have a working scanner on-hand, but it would be a fruitless endeavour nonetheless (being that she'd be about 5mm in height and 2mm in width!).

That is SOOO weird. The Australian editions must have been numbered differently in those days! That is the same cover with a few exceptions. The copy I have here (which I am borrowing from a friend) has:

- "Marvel (R) Australian Edition" in place of the price (60c) and the issue number (238)
- "Federal Presents" in place of "Marvel Comics Group"
- "Federal COMICS ARE THE RAGE!" in place of the barcode
- "No. 6" in a small box above "In the Shadow of Evils Past!"
AND
- "ALL COLOR" in place of the free tattoo offer (which is stupid, seeing as this is meant to be an Australian edition and they spell it 'color' anyway)

So I guess we've solved the conundrum. This "Federal Comics" company must have been distributing Marvel Comics in Australia in the early 80s and decided to take the liberty of renumbering the issues! Thanks for the help, guys.

LOL, it's like AOTC all over again!

Yeah, in the animated series of Spider-Man, GG threw MJ into a portal and she disappeared. She returned later on in the series without so much as an explanation, but then I guess, what else is a portal good for, other than safe-keeping?!

they explained it, the cartoon mixed in the whole clone thing, sandman got some scientist to clone MJ but she was kinda like him, but still loved peter and tried to find him...blah blah blah, she ended up not being able to hold her molecules together.

then other stuff happens, some more fun portal stuff, Spidey finds out from Madam Web that MJ is still alive, so the series ends with him setting off to find her. last episode has him go to another alt universe where he meets up with Stan Lee, and it pretty much ends there. they could have taken it to another season, it was kind of a cop out ending

And Darth Simon, what the heck are you talking about? Hobgoblin was introduced WAAAY later in the comics than Green Goblin...in fact, I read the issue that introduced the Hobgoblin nought but a few days ago - GG and Doc Ock were mentioned in the past tense within the first few panels. Funny thing is, the same issue introduces MJ as well!

so did I, unfortunatly i had a break between #10 and #11 and then proceeded to read about 100 spidey comics in about 2 weeks, so i may have totally confused myself cause of a spidey overload.

*edit* though you're not totally correct either. Green Goblin first appears in #14 with MJ's first mention being #15 We then see MJ first in #42
the first issue with hobgoblin isnt until #238. So yeah, i made a mistake, must of been talking about the cartoon where hobgoblin is one of, if not the first enemy spidey fights that got me all confuzzeled, but your info above isnt qhite accurate either

-Darth Simon

Well, this one I'm holding right in front of me right now (it's an Australian edition, but I don't think that makes a difference), it says it's from 1982, it's The Amazing Spider-Man #6, and it's titled In the Shadow of Evils Past. On the first page it has a caption saying "Stan Lee presents a momentous new episode in the life of the Amazing SPIDER-MAN." And in this comic, a petty criminal stumbles into Green Goblin's (spoken of in retrospect) lair, sells the information to a mysterious man in a hat and coat (who I can only assume is Kingsley), who in turn finds Norman Osborn's diary and goes around to all his secret storage areas, looting them and blowing them up.

This is the dialogue from the scene where he becomes the Hobgoblin:
Well, Norman Osborn may have died, but his legacy -- his power -- will live on! And this time, it shall be shaped by a man who knows how to use power!
"The Green Goblin is no more!"
"But in his place now stands --"
"-- The HOBGOBLIN!!"

That the last two lines are delivered with the Hobgoblin taking up the whole page, suggests to me that this is his first ever introduction.

But here's the thing! Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Felicia Hardy (The Black Cat), and Madame Web, are all mentioned in retrospect, and for some reason I find it hard to believe that all this could have happened in 5 issues!

And earlier on in this comic, Aunt May receives a chance call from her old friend Anna Watson. While they're on the phone, Mary Jane in the background (in a bikini, no less), walks up and kisses her Aunt Anna, telling her to say "hello" for her, and that she's off to the beach.

So there's my conundrum. I too thought that #14 was the introduction of the Green Goblin, and this comic in front of me proves that the Hobgoblin was afterwards - and yet clear as day - it says "No. 6" on the cover! Did they start the numbering all over again at any point?

Nah, I wasn't talking about Howdie Mandel - in truth I have no idea who he is. I watch the Australian version here and there, and as I said, it's going on its third year here. I'm just trying to gauge how long it's been on in the US (I didn't see it on TV at all while I was there).

As far as other game shows go, Wheel of Fortune's always good for a bit of fun, and so is the Price is Right. The good thing with the Price is Right in Australia, is that it all builds up to the Master Showcase at the end of the show, where contestants can and have one on a few occasions won $500, 000 worth of stuff - usually an Alfa Spider, Motorcycle, and a luxury apartment block on the Gold Coast. And the host, Larry Enda, is almost a human incarnation of Guy Smiley. Young fella, pearly white small, tall, and a real hit with the female contestants.

I like Millionaire in Australia (it's too easy in America, especially with four lifelines), but when I was in America, I came to love Jeopardy once again. It is a very challenging show, and I find that the champs of the show are usually above average in intelligence. Problem is, it got axed in Australia when I was about 10 years old, and it shows no signs of going back - I guess people thought that asking questions backwards was kinda retarded. I always had trouble answering those U.S. Civil War questions all the time, so an Australian incarnation would be awesome.

There's one other gameshow that we have that I really enjoy, and I am not sure whether or not it is peculiar to Australia. It was called Sale of the Century for a long time - and basically, it's just an old-fashioned hit-the-buzzer-and-answer-the-question affair. It went off the air for a few years and then came back as Temptation - not a very suitable name for what it is, but the 'temptation' element comes from the prizes offered mid-game, whereby the leading contestant can spend some of their points on it (e.g. 15 points for a diamond ring, 10 points for a top-of-the-range computer, etc.). The best part of the show is the fast-money round at the end - if the champ decides they're coming back, they try to build up their prize money - and if they answer 10 questions in a row correctly in the allotted time without a mistake (one mistake and they have to start from $0 again), they add $10, 000 to their total prize money (i.e. $1000 per correct answer, which is what they get to take home if they lose the next week).

What're your favs? Also, thoughts on Deal or No Deal?

Deal or No Deal pisses me off for a number of reasons:

1) They always congratulate the contestant on a "good guess" - there are no good guesses - the only skill is knowing when to take the money and run!
2) The contestants never know when to take the money and run
3) The host always makes lame jokes and quips strange phrases
AND
4) "The bank" is as stingy as hell at the worst times.

Out of curiousity, how long has Deal or No Deal been going on in other parts of the world? I think this is the third year of it here in Australia...

A lot of people I know in Seattle get that too. Kurt Cobain was right - weather does change moods. They have these things called 'sunbreaks' in Seattle; the sun shines so seldom they have a term for when it breaks through the clouds! When I got back to Australia, it was raining everyday, just like Seattle, but one day with a perverted Australian twist - a sunshower!

COIE is very necessary to understanding the current Infinite Crisis run, and is a critical piece of DC history, but is a little dated by today's standards in terms of dialogue and....naivitae(sp?). I've always felt that the post-crisis DCU took a much more dark and adult turn, and it was for the better. Artwork in that story is fantastic...it's amazing how many panels Perez managed to cram onto some of those pages. It's worth a read on that merit alone. My take: A good read every 10 years or so...that's about it.

On that subject, how are you finding Infinity Crisis so far? I've been reading good reviews ("Must Have" reviews to be exact), but I haven't started reading it yet. I was thinking of waiting for it to come out in TPB.

That's a cool slogan - "Only One Will Claim the Night". I was five years old when that movie came out. As a huge fan of those awful TV serials, I wanted to see it more than anything. I caught glimpses of what I called the 'black Batman', and I wanted in. But unfortunately my mother would never let me watch it with my friends because she deemed it too dark and violent (she was probably right). She was reasonable, though - she recorded it off TV for me and let me watch it when I was about 9.

Incidentally (or perhaps not-so-incidentally, given my Batman obsession), I rented out and watched Batman Begins. Again. For the 50 gazillionth time. Still good.

OK, rant over.

I've been voting on the basis of my favourite characters - not 'who would win in a fight'. Otherwise half of these characters shouldn't even be eligible.

Yeah, I used to think that Superman was the dumbest idea for a superhero ever. Then I sort of realised that he was the only superhero - the only one who was intrinsically the embodyment of 'super' - whose alter-ego was Clark Kent, and not the other way around. Then I realised that he was the template for all superheroes that followed him. And then I realised he was one of, if not THE most conceptually rich characters around, for myriad reasons which I have probably gone over before.

From what i remember it was good. I read the novelization of Death and life of Superman and that spurred me to get the comic (i got the tpb i think their called, all the comics put together in one book) good read.

anyone remember this re-invention of superman

from what i remember he didnt take with fans too well and they scrapped him.

Yeah, the famous (or should I say 'infamous'?!) 'Electric Blue Superman'. His powers had become electric in nature - I forgot how, but I'm sure I'll find out one day.

And HSVIJ, I think you misinterpreted something I said to HotRod before - a 'Pom' is an Englishman - so what I was really asking was "what's with all you miserable Englishmen?" Not to disparage any possible misery you might be encountering in the U.S...

I don't really care much for Spider-Man continuity, even in the comics these days - it's been FUBAR'd since well before the movies. Gwen wasn't the only love interest they merged into the character of MJ - after all, it was his first love (or maybe I should say 'crush', as they never got together) Liz Allan who ended up marrying Harry Osborn. This is no big deal for me, as Liz Allan was a pretty nothing character in the grand scheme of things.
