How "original" do you think it is going to be...? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time
I guess this is where the rifts between the ideologies of OOT fans start to take shape...

I have always been in favour of FX cleanups, etc. - a "de-assified" Special Edition if you will - without all the story/characterisation changes. For instance, getting rid of garbage mattes on TIE Fighters and matte-lines in snowspeeder cockpits, but without the torture of CGI Jabbas, distracting extraneous (and annoying) musical numbers, etc. But having said that, from what I've seen on the Preservation Boards, perhaps this kind of endeavour is best left to people outside of LFL. It seems that LFL is in favour of weird RGB settings and other corner-cutting "clean-up" techniques. If we do get the raw source material on DVD, it would be a world of help to all those preservation efforts out there - or would it defeat the purpose?

Perhaps another theory can be formulated - maybe they'll release the bare-bones OOT this time around, and save a cleaned up OOT for next time?

It's even on in Australia, fellaz...

I went with a friend 'cause it was my birthday too (and Buddha's as well)! So my friend bought me a TPB (Tales of the Demon), and my family gave me some money to buy some comics too. The free comic I got sucked, though (some JLA one based off a cartoon series by the look of it) - they must've ran out of the good ones.

My purchases that day included:

DC: The New Frontier Vol. 1 - AWESOME, by the way
Superman: Birthright
Batman: Venom
Wonder Woman #215 & 217
Legends of the Dark Knight #192

It was 65% off all back issues so all the others I was after were long gone! But these should keep me busy for a while...

Well 'grammar' is the way we spell it in Australia, and we spell everything the same as the Poms (or 'Brits' for the Americans not in the know) - armour, colour, grammar, civilisation, you know what I mean...

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM
Time

I hate to be a negative nancy and piss on everyone's parade, but Lucas isn't doing this because of overwhelming demand, internet petitions, or because he's suddenly been possessed by Shebastian Shaw. It's simply a business decision. Remember this little tidbit:

"The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it. ...[] ... it doesn’t really exist anymore."

His lawyers must have shit enough bricks to build a great wall along the mexican border. That statement would make it almost impossible to sue anybody for copying/distributing copies of the real Star Wars. How could he claim damages resulting from someone copying something that "doesn't really exist anymore?" The release of "the other movie" on dvd will change that. He'll be able to claim lost revenues for this dvd. He'll be able to sue anyone copying and/or distributing copies of TRSW and he'll win in court.

He probably wasn't lying when he said the OOT would never be released on dvd. His lawyers on the other hand, after he made the foolish statement quoted above, obviously let him know only an idiot would disown a piece of work that is such a huge money maker. A good lesson for all artists, don't ever disown a piece of work no matter how much you despise it, it may cost you considerable $$ down the road.

On the positive side, at least you get the OOT on dvd like you've always wanted! Too bad you have to buy the crap versions too! But Lucas is still the selfish fat hack he's always been. (Gee, can you tell I still hate his fatnecked guts?)

Ned

Valid points, but you can bet that anyone who's been working on transfers for the last however-many years will get their hands on the Official DVD legitimately - and if you own the home version, and you don't do it for profit...right?

Latest things I've read:

World Without a Superman - Surprisingly good given Superman's absence. It seems Superman is more trouble to Luthor dead than alive!

Return of Superman - Oh my goodness this book just kept getting better and better. Trying to figure out how Superman would come back, and then which of the Supermen is the real one, full of twists and turns. And Steel - what a great character!

Superman: Red Son - One of the best TPBs I've ever read. For real. If you haven't read this book, go out and get it now. Having Superman land in Russia instead of America was just fertile ground for a great story. Superman's new heritage changes the dynamic of every staple character in a fresh, new way - especially Batman - oh man, that was a Batman fan's wet dream. A dystopian masterpiece. READ IT.

Batman: A Dark Victory - A great follow-up to Long Halloween, though perhaps not quite as great. But a great mystery story with as many twists and turns as its predecessor. I loved the way they introduced Robin too - the dynamic between the two characters worked really well. I think Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale are shaping up to be my favourite team.

Books I'll probably get next: Hush Vol. 2, Kingdom Come, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Batman/Dracula: Red Rain, and DC: The New Frontier.

Does anyone here think Batman: Year 100 will come out in TPB? I really want to read them, but they're too expensive on their own...

And Free Comic Book Day on my birthday - how sweet is that? Saturday 6 May, peoples...

LOL, I was just watching the '97 SE of ROTJ today and I was clamouring for that song at the end. Just to see Sebastian Shaw smiling back at me though was enough for me.

But tonight, I had an orgasm after reading that announcement. I feel a peace inside me - like a warm orb in my centre.

Holy Crap. I couldn't believe this when I read it. I am so happy for all of us. Well done, fellas, especially Jay! Thanks to all of you who have been making their own preservation efforts - I believe that you guys are the crusaders who kept the dream alive. And don't stop now! You may yet make a superior transfer than Lucasfilm does this September...God knows they should have hired some of you to restore the original film.

May the Force be with you all. Always.

And I'll continue to kick around these boards. I like you guys.

Brilliant Article about 'white guilt'

Why is it that we humans insist on having black-and-white answers to all problems when we know (we KNOW) that almost everything lies somewhere in the grey areas? The truth is, most people are neither far right nor far left. We are somewhere in the middle, and I think a great many of us can agree that both sides have some valid points. For example, most people do not think that stepping on the back of another is person is the morally right way to gain success - but, most people do not think that you should give every beggar you see a dollar, until you are a beggar yourself.

Unfortunately, the extremists amongst us have always been the loudest voices; and, these days, they seem to be all we can hear. It freaks me out that stating any viewpoint not totally in line with that of the current government’s immediately gets one labeled as a “right wing nut.” And vice-versa, that if you agree with anything they do, you are “one of them.” When did politics become so polar? If we look at our American history, we find that this total split, (especially now, when you’re either a tree-hugging, industry-hating, new-age, loopy right wing hippie or a baby seal-killing, peoples-oppressing, money-grubbing conservative) has only been within the past, say 100-150 years or so? Our country was founded upon many political parties, some of which were around for one election, some for decades, but enough to represent all of the glorious views and opinions of its people.

For myself, I hesitate to call myself anything but “independent,” because (as usual) both sides of this story have many facts wrong, many opinions with which I disagree, and many with which I do agree. I like some of both side’s methods, and I hate some of both. The one thing that I will say, just my opinion, is that there is a storm brewing in this country. Any one who does not agree need only study their revolutionary history (from any country.) The divide between those who have and those who do not is getting a lot wider and it seems like a whole lot of us are falling into the chasm. But I love my country, and I think that one of the beautiful things about America is its ability to change. I hope that we are able to put aside our polarity in politics and find some real solutions to the problems that we as a society are facing soon, because I don’t even want to think about what this country is going to be like in 20 years if we do not.

I agree with pretty much everything you're saying except that everytime you say "right wing" you actually mean "left wing".

Yeah, well, at least I can spell "Amateur"!

.......I am speechless. I pride myself on my spelling and Grammer, yet a simple schoolboy and I look like a punk.

I bow to Gaffer.

But swiftly changing the subject, I logged on for a quick hello and I see that we are finally getting the OT on DVD!!! We did it!!!

Isn't it spelt 'grammar'?

Superman Movie
Time
LOL - her lassou is glowing!

It probably would have been better to cut loose from all previous Superman outings and to go back to the comics for inspiration. The first two Superman movies were brilliant, but it seems the mixed approach to this movie will be its death-knell.

On one hand, they're using music from the original movies; voiceovers from Marlon Brando as Jor-El; and story continuity from the first two films; and on the other they're deciding to ditch Lex Luthor's wig (which is unimportant except for the fact that he wears them in the first two movies); designing Lois' clothes according to 1940s stylings (as opposed to say, 1970s/80s); telling Kate Bosworth not to watch the first two movies so that she doesn't consciously evoke Margot Kidder; and of course, casting different actors for the same roles (including a Superman who looks too young to be returning from anything, and a Lois Lane who looks too young for someone who's being returned to).

It's just going to mess with everyone's heads: same continuity + different actors + different approaches = ?

I predict that my thoughts upon leaving the cinema will be something like this: what exactly were they trying to do?

Nintendo Wii
Time
I fit into the 18-25 bracket, and I'm all for Wii. And as I said, I'm a hardcore Sega fan that's been playing videogames all his life. I own a Megadrive, Saturn, Dreamcast, XBox, and I'm getting a Wii. In fact, my Megadrive and Saturn is still plugged in alongside my XBox. I was seriously thinking of getting a GameCube too - there are some great games on it.

Basically, I'm just using myself as a case study to say that this is the kind of demographic I am, and Nintendo has snagged me.

The only way Superman could have sex with normal women is with a kryptonite condom. And that would kill him.

But that's not just a criticism of the movie - that's a criticism of the entire Superman continuity - Lois and Superman have been MARRIED in the comics before, and at the very least romantically involved, so how does that work?

Just saw Hugh Jackman in a daytime movie called 'Paperback Hero' today. It was pretty good. It's an Australian film about a truckdriver from central Queensland who's written a romance novel. A publishing agent comes to find the author of his book, but the thing is, he's ghost-written it under the name of one of his female friends.

The highest ranking would simply be 'The Force'!

Nintendo Wii
Time
Hey look, I'm a gamer, and I've been playing them since the Megadrive. I am a hardcore Sega fan through and through, and yet, Nintendo have managed to win me over already with Wii. When Wii comes out, I will have owned my first Nintendo console ever, and here is why:

Nintendo are about the games. They are about changing the way games are played. What they are talking about is literally a revolution in gaming.

And what is Microsoft and Sony talking about? Upgrading their machines so that they have better graphics.

That's end of story for me - I've made my decision already, and two of the three aren't even out yet.
