Now maybe if you said you thump the TMNT2 song by Vanilla Ice every where you go that would be different.

I've known the T-U-R-T-L-E Power rap from the TMNT movie credits since I was 8. Does that make me cool?

Please say yes...

That's what I was thinking, Wook. If the PS3 is successful, it will be because of the installed base of the PS2--those who think Playstation = gaming, who grew up while Nintendo was waning but before Microsoft bumped in.

I'm starting to believe that the entire gaming industry will crash. It'd take me too long to explain why, but basically, there's not enough fun or immersion, and we've been seeing the same annoying contrivances on the last two (and in some cases, 4) generations of console. Including, but not limited to:

- Loading times (you know, them being there AT ALL)

Um, Loading times are just a part of storing games on CDs. They will always be there as long as systems can't store 5 GB as ram and still put out a decent graphics. Which they definitely can't yet.

- Save points (as in, not being able to save whenever you want)

Erm... Saving wherever you want requires a LOT of memory and would be IMMENSILY cheap in RPGs and Platform games.

- Lack of Effective A.I. (falling back on multiplayer to give an FPS opponent some INTELLIGENCE)

Well, games tend to be the funnest against another human anyway. Effective AI is hard to do, but there have been some recent strides forward.

- Invisible walls in mid-air (I'm look at you, random snowboarding game! Put a cliff there, or something!)

DEFINITELY agreed. If you can't go there, why bother rendering it in 3D?

- Uninteractive, indestructable environments (why can I shoot the Coke can and not the magazine next to it?!)

Totally uninteractive invironments annoy me too, especially if they're rendered, but destruction also requires a lot of memory. Which is why you don't see games like Mercenaries on the DS.

- Shoddy cameras (designed to show off the pretty graphics, not to see the character and PLAY)

I've seen some bad cameras, but most of them are in games with bad production values. Most games with good cameras I've seen also have good graphics.

Being able to save anywhere at any point in the game doesn't affect anything at all memory wise - you still have the space, and when you run low you just save over older saves - I've always done this even when I've had tonnes of memory, so I assume a lot of other people would too. It is present in games like KOTOR and Jade Empire among others. But my criticism was still leveled at a lot of games out there that confuse real difficulty in a game with actual frustration and sparse save points (*cough* Tomb Raider *cough*). Load times can always be minimised, even in the speed of the drive itself. Sometimes, it's just a matter of code and developers simply don't put the effort in. Effective AI is a necessary step forward, if not for FPSs, for all the one player games out there, and if developers want people still interested in videogames after this generation, they will have to think very seriously about making some leaps in this area. The novelty will wear off one day. Destruction does require a lot of memory, but if *some* things can be destroyed in a game, it should be consistent, unlike the example that I gave, which was actually from Doom 3.

The guy on ESPN says it was a foul no question, but of course he's Italian so I can't take his word for it.

Don't worry, the English commentator agreed with you guys (not Gary Bloom, but the other guy! Sounds the same to me, though ). It was very disappointing to go out like that, I must say. And to think that just 10 seconds later, we could have been taking penalty shoot-outs...

Our dreams are dashed like so much pottery. But it had to happen somewhere along the line. But fair play to the Italians, I think they played a good clean game, and I didn't see many if any dodgy dives or fake injuries. The penalties called against us were justified for once, so good work to the ref as well. But I will say this, I do believe that final penalty was an incorrect call. Not necessarily a *bad call* because it is understandable that the events could have been interpreted that way from his angle, and he can't go back on a call. Although, having said that, should a ref make such a momentous call without being 100% certain? It was disappointing, because I do think we were the stronger team and I was hanging out for some shoot-outs at the end, but at least Italy played fairly.

I think Darth Adroit hit the nail on the head with the 'HUGE BALLS' thing. I happen to be a Christian myself, but that has got to be one of the most noble portrayals of atheism I've ever read. But what I wanted to draw attention to in particular along those lines is: BE confident. Take confidence in your beliefs and why you choose to live the way you live. Take confidence in being integral to those beliefs in your actions. Take confidence in the fact that NOBODY in this universe is just like you - you are unique and special, right down to your genetics. You won the first race you ever ran (you know, the one down the birth canal ), which already sets you apart from the rest of the pack (i.e. you beat all the other sperm - gross, I know). And somehow it all came back to balls again...

But what I was saying was that confidence is a powerful thing in all areas of your life, and that includes attracting members of the opposite sex. If you get that part down pat, the rest will fall into place.

I'm starting to wonder if both formats won't be a flop.

I don't *want* to adopt a new format. It took me years to even adopt DVD, and I could see clear benefits to adopting it as a format. Now there's a new format (two, rather) on the horizon for which I see no clear benefits; only deficits in my bank account. I will adopt a high definition high-capacity format when I am forced to, because I don't see myself wanting to make the transition.

If my thinking is representative of the general public, then anyone's taking a financial risk on a new format at this stage.

Yes oxidize is a word we use. I can tell you exactly why it’s happening; you have been blowing on your cartridges/ console contacts. Use Rubbing Alcohol (Isopropyl) to clean your contacts and that won’t happen. Alcohol evaporates fast and is, for the most part, non-corrosive. Saliva is very corrosive on metal when combined with oxygen and pollutants.

With the exception of my Atari 5200 I’ve never had problems with my controllers, but consoles are a separate issue altogether. I always replace my consoles when they wear out so look at my current list of systems to see the companies I’ve had issues with:

System Number purchased
Atari 2600 (VCS) 3
Atari 5200 1 (serious controller issues)
Atari 7800 1
Atari Jaguar 1
Mattel Intellivision 2
Coleco Colecovision 1
Nintendo NES 3
Nintendo SNES 1
Nintendo N64 2
Nintendo Game Cube 1
Sega Master System 1
Sega Genesis 1
Sega CD 1
Sega Saturn 1
Sega DreamCast 1
Sony PlayStation 2
Sony PS2 3 (2 original tray, 1 new clam-shell)
SNK Neo Geo (Cart) 1
Microsoft X-Box 1

I’ve had all sorts of problems with Sony systems. Their optical drives are prone to failure. I had 2 CD-ROMS go bad on my original PlayStations and I’ve had two DVD failures on the PS2. I’ve had the new PS2 for about a year now and it seems to hold up well.

Microsoft makes a very solid machine. My X-Box drive tray sticks when closing sometimes, but I have an X-Box with a Thompson Drive and those Models have problems like that. It’s an annoying problem, but not one that prevents using the system.

Nintendo makes a good system. They have a better reputation with their newer systems. The NES had issues with the catch on the cartridge drive failing. I know many people that got past that issue by inserting a second cart on top of the one being played, which would force the game down into place.

The companies that make the most dependable systems are no longer making game systems. SNK, Coleco and especially Sega make very solid and dependable systems.

The TG-16 was a fun system. I spent hours playing Military Madness and R-Type. I never had the money for the TurboGrafxCD or the TurboDuo, but I know both had great games. I really wanted and still want a SuperGrafx. I can’t get my frau to buy off on the idea of paying over $300 to get an obsolete, 10-year-old system that only has 5 games. The only reason I was able to pull off the Neo Geo was because my wife really likes Ninja Combat and World Heroes 2.

But from a neutral's position, have we been rough AT ALL? I can think of maybe one time when Aloisi pushed over a Japanese player that cut in front of him, but nothing else...

The attitude of the competition so far seems to be: "alright you noobs, you wanna play with the big boys, you gotta earn it." And the way we earn it is by taking hits and getting smashed with penalties. The only reason we've been progressing at all is that they've somehow had the grace to let it go and play on.

Yeah, I have to say, Australia has been on the back-end of the worst calls in the World Cup so far. I think it's because the Japanese accused us of playing too rough BEFORE their match against us! Cue all the dives and fake injuries and we had a 'game' punctuated by penalties at every stop.

If the referees don't pick up their game, I don't see us standing any chance of progressing past Italy...

I tell you what, we better not lose this - we were robbed of a goal three minutes ago - and if we lose, we'll be bitter about it all week.

We were doing so well going into halftime, now things are falling apart. And the sad thing is it's mostly to do with bad calls from the ref.

Ever since this press release came out accusing us of 'roughness', EVERY ref has been taking the other side. I for one haven't seen a single player genuinely hurt by an Australian player.

Well, America (like in so many other instances) was the *only* country to use the name. I don't know why they need to have so many products pitched at them differently from everyone else.
