The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

That’s because I didn’t redo ANH when I did the others because I’m still planning a revision for it. It could easily be a good while yet before its ready, though.

How about the Smaller 1080p encodes, are they coming for the Prequel Trilogy as well? The quality/size ratio is perfect, so it would be neat.

The Empire Strikes Back - Expanded Edition (Work in Progress)

Looking great. Nice touch restoring the bacta tank to its originally intended color.

I’m really glad to see all this footage (the Medbay especially) looking this good. I always felt we could spend some more time chillin’ at Echo Base before it’s blown to smithereens.

Some of it is cool, but I wouldn’t use stuff like the new Wampa or the citizens of Cloud City. It would be the new approach to CC, extended Lando opening the Falcon hatch, and maybe the clip before Han and Leia talk, with the speeders flying around. I’d have to look around.

Personally I’m in favor of keeping the Cloud City establishing shots to theatrical, just so it doesn’t look too slick or modern in contrast to the grindhouse flair. As for the SE Wampa I actually have no gripe with it being on its original cave scene and I think it would make sense for it to be featured in an expanded edition, given it’s live action footage and not just a CG addition. I wouldn’t bother stitching it into the “ice creatures attack” footage, though. Clunky as that one is, I figure the blaster fire VFX and soundscape would be enough to salvage it (I hope, at least).

IIRC, Fuji’s cleaner and Poita’s (German) have better colors. But since they’re sources for 4k80, I’d lean into Renegade Grindhouse and its offsprings, GRM’s and Dreamastered

JEDIT: I read about the 16mm Dupe Zemastered and it might be a better match, though I haven’t seen it myself. It looks very akin to Puggo’s, which afaik is only on standard def.

So that the final effect is not so jarring, might be good to use some version of 4K80 as the base print once that’s released

Idk, 4k80 is supposed to be a pristine presentation so these would always stick out, much like the Darklighter Cut which used the SSE. Now a grindhouse feature is probably not the projects’ aim, but I think it’d be the ideal way to present this footage. I’m looking forward to see this in any way, though.

The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

May I respectfully intrude?

I think its not a good idea to start the crawl with “the last jedi”, mostly because its the title for the next installment. Coming right after ROTJ the line “Luke Skywalker has vanished” sounds more impactful, so that’s something I’d consider keeping from the original crawl. Also, with the First Order being more of an outcast paramilitary force with no rule or seat of power, I think it shouldn’t be called “Imperial”. Amongst other things, I’d rearrange it like this:

Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, a new power arises to threaten the galaxy.

Descending into endless divide, some members of the Republic Senate have secretly called upon a daring RESISTANCE to find the last Jedi and restore the light of hope to the waning stars.

Emerging from a hidden fortress of the crumbled Empire, the evil FIRST ORDER hastens toward the wasteland of Jakku, a sanctuary which holds the key to Skywalker’s return…

in Starlight Rey’s journey is more clearly about her quick acceptance of the Dark Side to survive, implying that she must find a mentor in the Force if she is to avoid this dark fate. Her meeting with Luke retains its former meaning, but now gains a new one in that Rey is revealing her deep spiritual and emotional need for guidance. She is not a centered, self-sufficient character as she was portrayed in the theatrical version, but a hurt, wounded character who has survived only by giving in to vengeance. With this new context the final moments seem to me to be a fitting culmination of Rey’s journey given the assumption that Luke takes the saber and becomes the mentor she needs. In this way the film ends on the perfect moment, for any rejection by Luke would throw her into deeper temptation as TLJ reveals.

What a great piece of insight, just sold me on the edit. Can I get a look-see?

I think your v2 is the quintessential AotC edit. Well done.

I second this.

As much as I welcome most of the changes though, I’m sticking with V1 solely because of the Droid Factory being absent.

I applaud Octorox’ sensibilities as well and his promptness to improve on his own work while open to feedback.

Well done indeed!

V2 is available and addresses much of the feedback I’ve gotten on this edit over the years. PM me for a link as always or find it in the usual places (old links should still work).

That’s good news, Octorox!
Besides addressing feedback, did you use any new sources for V2?

The updates are currently only in the survival edition. I’ll be going to upload an updated base version this weekend.

Any news on the v2 update, Dig?

Sorry, life required some more intentional focus lately. With the color, opening and deepfake overhauls it became a bit more to bite off. I’m currently working on a Star Trek project, but should have some time to see how extensive a v3 would be of the base edit. I’ll make sure to post more when it’s updated 😃 Thanks for reaching out!

Don’t worry!
I’m glad its still on your plans. Thanks!

Or even if you guys have any suggestions for any Star Wars deepfakes you might want to see.

How about deepfakin Ewan McGregor’s real beard into his dreadful fake beard on those AotC reshoots?

Would be similar to what you did to Cavill’s removed mustache, I gather.
