The Empire Strikes Back - Expanded Edition (Work in Progress)

What are you referring to with the Wampa attack?

I meant the way you restored the Wampa attack on Echo Base doesn’t feel quite right. Specifically, the almost identical Wampa lunge from earlier in the cave with Luke. And then the chopped Wampa arm moved forward, which seems a bit strange to be chopped off by blaster fire. Also, using SE material in the scene feels like it’s taking away a bit of its authenticity. It’s cut very fast anyway, and I’m not sure the SE with added FX is doing it any favors. Maybe we don’t need to see the Wampa being hit? Would it work to cut from the rebel soldier firing his blaster directly to the tunnel tumbling and him saying “I got it”? What do you think?

I also just noticed some snippets from your Leftovers compilation weren’t used in your EE. For example, the brief shot in the cave from behind the Wampa’s claws. Isn’t it possible to fit it in, maybe a bit slowed down? Just like Luke’s healing mask later in the medical bay, an iconic shot that only ever made it into the classic comics.

And the brief sequence of Han lifting Leia out of the way during their hallway argument. Looks a bit tricky to include because of the dialogue, but it would be one charming addition as well.

So, I just sat through this and had a blast. I’m glad you went with my suggestion of going full grindhouse with it. It’s all so seamless that I don’t think it would have worked this good otherwise.

Issues I noticed were what Slavicuss already pointed with the spliced frames and audio desync during the “Chewie don’t lose your temper” scene; and also the R2 scream over the Destroyer Bridge/deleted Medical Bay wipe (26’23").

Outside of that, I think the audio in the extended Falcon repair with Han and Leia (55’) is a bit too loud; and the coloring on the restored saber training at 67’ looks a tad too contrasty/vibrant compared to the rest of the presentation.

Oh, and any reason for the Han-Leia exchange “Well Your Highness I guess this is it” before “don’t get all mushy on me” got cut? Also, the Wampa clawing the wall during the hallway argument feels a bit out of place. I guess it’s necessary to cut back to Han returning to Leia?

On a personal note I’m on the fence over scraping original sequences to salvage the restored scenes, as in the case with the Wampa attack on Echo Base and General Veers’ demise. I might be wrong on how well it would glue with the rest of the film, but I’d rather conserve the restored scenes, janky as they are, as much as possible without rearranging theatrical footage.

Fantastic job, anyway. I was looking forward to this for a while now, and it’s great to finally see it. Thanks!

If anyone has created a foreign language dub of ESB:R and would like it to be included on the Blu-Ray version, can you please message me. Thanks

Hey Ady, if you’re about to put out the BD version, I have since updated the PT-BR subs I worked on for the 2021 release. I’ll give it one more pass and PM it to you in the next few days.

OK, I guess I’ll say this once more, with feeling ^^:

Hi. I currently have ROTR [No Moe Intro] with english subs by MalàStrana.

I also have ROTR [Survival Edition], but it doesn’t have any subs, which makes it a big problem for me and many other folks out there. Of course it doesn’t make DigMod’s amazing work any less good, but I think it should just be ‘good practice’ to ALWAYS provide at least english subs with each and every fan edit. For example, that’s already the case with all Hal9000 SW fan edits.

So, two questions:

  1. Could somebody please provide english subs for the Survival Edition?
  2. Will there ever be a v3 solving the Scarif hard drive plot hole wisely pointed out by @regularjoe ?

Thank you.

Hey, Jose. I’d say give it a try yourself. Going from the base edit to the Survivor Edition should require minimal effort to adjust the subs. I recommend SubtitleEdit, it’s what I use. I used to know jack about captioning, but started slowly and now I have about a dozen full captions and translations done for several fanedits, some made from scratch. Matter of fact I have base RotR fully translated to Brazilian Portuguese right now, expecting to update it for V2. It’s been some time, but I hope DigMod hasn’t given up on it.

DUELING WITH FATE - The Making of Episode I - A 13-Part Docu-Series (Released!)

One of my favourite things I’ve done in this whole TPM thing, which is just talking about Doug Chiang and his process with George and with design. It’s so fun combining so many different sources and intercutting everything to tell one story. It’s great, and I’m enjoying it.

https://vimeo.com/829059367

I’ve watched through my 2nd rough cut, and am now making adjustments, both technical and story-wise to get everything feeling smooth and cohesive, which means cutting and rearranging materials. Right now I’ve locked Part 1-4, which leaves 5-14. Hopefully it’s done soon-ish.

So cool. Can’t wait to see the whole thing.

Here’s the Dooku Duel. Lots of changes here, ranging from cutting sections of the fight, to using pans and zooms to get more activity out of it, moving some shots from parts of the fight to other sequences, etc. I wanted Dooku to feel scarier, and the fight to feel more dangerous. I also removed the cutaways to Yoda and Padme so we stay in the fight the whole time.

Yoda no longer appears as part of this sequence. I always felt like it was one action scene too many, and I love the idea of Yoda not using a lightsaber until he kills the two clone troopers during Order 66.

This is what I’ve always wanted. The Dooku showdown is so embarrassing for Obi and Ani, and the way Yoda comes to their rescue just makes it worse. I agree on his complete absence in this scene.

I don’t know if it’s the same issue as Telion’s, but I do think ANH:R looks too sharp there. It’s as if the background elements are too highlighted and don’t blend in, particularly against the clear blue sky. Compared to the 2011 source, I’d say leaving some sort of gradient to the sky (like that dust haze in the 2020 shot) would alleviate that and give it a more organic look.

I cannot abide by this Dexter Jettster slander. (Although my edit doesn’t include him, it was more for pacing reasons, and honestly I’ve kind of softened on the scene at this point.)

No slander. And that’s exactly why (pacing) I think the film is better off without his scene. I don’t mind the character, but I do find the CGi overwhelming.

My ideal cut would be something like what darthrush proposed, Hal/L8wtr’s cut with:

  • no Dexter
  • original title
  • Spence’s training scene
  • darthrush’s Naboo/kamino music transition
  • extended jango shots

For me as well. Any edit with Dex in it is a no-no for me, and the additions showcased here are fast becoming essential.

This looks so good, can’t wait!

Really minor gripe with the added holo display of the Death Star orbit. It’s well done for sure, but unlike the interactive tactical panels added to Echo Base that blend in seamlessly, the colored 3d holo as a centerpiece here feels detached from the OT aesthetic somehow (plus the original is such a cool design).

Guardian of the Force (an Obi-Wan movie edit)
Time

Having never seen the show or its other edits before, I just watched this and liked it a lot!

I had only read bad things about the show, but if that’s the case then you did a great job with the source material. It feels like a movie and the pace is just right. Proficiently put together as well.

I did think the audio was a bit muffled, specially at the beginning, and the image is quite soft (I watched the ~7GB upscaled file).

Other than some nitpicking, my main gripes with the cut itself would be:

  • The musical score is VERY lacking. Not completely throughout, but in most dramatic and tenseful moments it screams “generic youtube channel epic trailer music”. I wonder how much work would be to rescore the cut with some varied SW music, it’d certainly improve it;
  • The Grand Inquisitor, what a cringe worthy fellow. Looks like a Power Rangers crossover or something. Couldn’t he remain dead for the rest of the film? Or is he vital to some continuity? I hope not;
  • Some videogamey moments that I think the cut would be better off without (Vader suiting-up, Vader force-pulling the ship);
  • The final showdown between Vader and Obi-Wan could be even more streamlined, perhaps? Specifically when Vader buries Obi-Wan and later when Obi force-push rocks at Vader, also look very videogamey and could be cut from the fight with it being resumed seamlessly - with the only downside of Vader being inexplicably weakened to the point of defeat.

What do you think?

Thanks again for sharing and the work you put into it.
