For those who are conflicted over TLJ, I recommend playing the game Kotor2 (with the restoration mods of course). The latter shows you how to challenge and subvert Star Wars while still being respectful of the source material. Just an awesome game/experience.

I hope the moderators are okay with me posting this here.

But isn’t that game set a long time before the prequels? so it doesn’t have anything it needs to follow and nobody we know from the films even in it. So no built up expectation in out minds or in the books people have read as to what a certain character should be.

Exactly so. Which is why it works.

Return of the Jedi: 9/10

Ford and Fisher mail in their performances.

Kinda, yeah, but shouldn’t a bad performance by two of the three leads result in something less than a 9/10?

A fair point. My response is that because the film focused on Luke more than the others, their performances did not hurt as much as they might have. Plus, awesome space battle at the end!!!

Yeah… that didn’t really work out.

I suspect something else: without him, there will be no more great Star Wars films.

There’s been two since he stepped down.

Which ones?

The two that have been made so far.

I don’t know if I’d go so far as to call them great, but not sure why you feel the need to ask that question.

There’s been three good movies.

So that means you liked Rogue One I guess?

I did. I don’t get all the hate around it.

Me neither. But I did not like it. I rented it (!) from my local video store and fast forwarded through the last third. The Vader sequence at the end seemed like the biggest, cheesiest piece of fan service ever.

We who?

Myself for sure, but I think others too. Maybe even you?

So how about it? Do you prefer the scenario I postulated or the present condition of Star Wars?

I’ll be honest I didn’t read past the part I quoted because I’m lazy. But I like the ST so far, so I guess not for me.

Oh. Maybe read it all and let us discuss in a respectfull manner?

I thought you claimed to remember me.

I do. Irreverent at times, but usually respectful!

But you have not addressed my scenario. Would you have liked to seen movies about Luke and Leia rebuilding the galaxy or do you prefer what we are given in the ST?

That’s not answerable because you’re asking me to compare a hypothetical set of movies to one that already exists.

Hmm. I think it is. I liked TFA, but would definitely have preferred a screen adaption (or HBO adaption) of Heir to The Empire. Have you never run through alternatives to the Alien 3 film we got and said, “Man, that would have been so much better!”?

My 2017 opinion:

Star Wars: 10/10

What can I say? Perfect movie

Empire Strikes Back: 9.5/10

The Yoda parts get boring. There, I said it.

Return of the Jedi: 9/10

Ford and Fisher mail in their performances. Hamill is great. The Emperor is menacing and awesone.

The Force Awakens: 7/10

Feels like Star Wars. The first half is 8.5/10, the second is 5.5/ 10

Revenge of the Sith: 6.5/10

I like Hayden Christensen in this for some reason. Dialogue is bad of course, but he tries.

TPM: 5/10
AOTC: 4/10

…can never happen. In an ideal world, George Lucas would have kept directing and writing films, keeping his craft sharp. He has Maria by his side, complementing his strengths, compensating for his weaknesses. Around 1990, George realizes that he does not need any more advanced special effects to make more Star Wars films; he just needs good stories. He makes the ST focusing on Luke’s efforts to rebuild the Jedi and Leia’s efforts to rebuild the Republic. The films are released in 1993, 1995, and 1997.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

It’s been a while.

Random wall of text review!

Loved Rey, BB8, the overall feel of the film. The main OT characters were actually unnecessary and felt forced into the film (except Luke - who was barely in it). The more minor one’s (Chewie and the droids) fit in nicely. The filmmakers knew they could never make a villain as good as Vader so they made one who was literally a Vader wannabe; pretty clever actually. Ren was a 7/10, but could easily have been a 2/10, so good job. There was more humour in the BB8 “thumbs-up” scene than in the whole prequel trilogy. Rey and BB8 are “classic” characters, worthy to stand beside the OT cast. Other than “Rey’s Theme”, the score was very forgettable. This was as good as could have expected, with the exception of the poor score. Snoke is a terrible name and not at all frightening as a character, and I fear for VIII and IX since he will probably be in it more. Abrams was a safe and uninspired choice as a director, but I think he gave it his all. Han’s death did not affect me like it should have. His character seemed to have taken a step back from the OT. I miss the Han from Zahn’s novels. Starkillerr base was unnecessary WE DID NOT NEED ANOTHER DEATH STAR! Carrie Fisher…yikes. Escape from Jakku and Rey-Ren fight were the highlights in regards to action scenes. Glad the duel was not too choreographed.

Almost as good as ROTJ, which is what I had hoped for.

What we like about the Prequels

There is a part in ROTS, right after Padme lands her ship on Mustafar, when the movie stops for a few seconds to hang on a shot of her resting her head on her hand, gazing out the window lost in contemplation of what she's about to face, and starting to cry, while a somber rendition of Anakin and Padme's love theme plays in the soundtrack. For a fleeting moment, I'm transported to a different dimension where the rest of the prequel trilogy around that scene disappears and is replaced with what it should have been.

The problem is that the prequels fall so short of their potential that, paradoxically, the good things about them just serve to make them even harder to stomach.

I agree, there are good moments in the PT that get me wonder on why they didn't want to put a little bit more effort on the movies, those moment show they were able to do it.

+1. That shot of Padme is the best moment in the prequels. And I did quite like the Across the Stars love theme.

I also kind of liked Count Dooku (the character, not necessarily the performance) - he seems to actually think he is one of the good guys. Palpy really screwed with his mind.
