In my understanding of this stuff there is a difference between seeing yourself as both masculine and feminine, or having characteristics that are described as such, then being gender-fluid.

Regardless, Billy Dee is a real cool dude/dudette. Could have stood to lose a few pounds before ROTJ started filming though. That General’s uniform was looking a little tight around the midriff.

I have to say one of the ideas I liked in DE was that a darksider was consumed by the idea of physical immortality, whereas a Jedi accepted death.

I’m so glad they made the ST. When I recently re-watched the OT I could not help but think “This doesn’t make any sense! Men can’t solve anything! Palpatine would never be defeated by a couple of stupid men. Only a SIW could possible defeat him!”

I need a definitive answer from our resident restoration guys. What were the colours of the various lightsabers in the OT in the theaters?

Were Luke and Ben’s blades blue, light blue, or cyan? I always remember Luke’s blade being sky blue in SW, but a deeper “true” blue in Empire.

Was Vader’s crimson, orange-red, pink-red (always seemed pink-red on in Empire, but more crimson in Return)?

What is unique about Aliens is that it is a different genre from it’s predecessor. How many movies have had sequels that are in a different film genre? Alien is Halloween in space (a well acted, well crafted slasher film), but Aliens is more of an action movie - yet retaining a lot of the horror elements.

I like about half the scenes in Cameron’s Director’s cut. The early scene with Newt and her family is really bad, but the sentry gun stuff is great. I like it when Hicks and Ripley exchange first names, but hate the extended discussion of the Alien social structure in medlab.

I think Alien 3 is watchable, but not enjoyable. Prometheus was half-baked; either be a prequel or don’t be. A lot of compromises in it, and I would guess pressure from the studio to tie it into the main Alien Series. Have not seen Convent or whatever it is called and have no interest in doing so.

I also agree with your notion that the Jedi used blasters as well as lightsabers, although I think the lightsaber should still be their main weapon. And the Jedi are Knights right? Not weird monks that can’t have sex, families, or “attachments”.

SW77 is self-contained because Lucas had no idea if any sequels would happen; hence the happy ending. Vader getting away in the end is a classic scenario from the pulp serials like Flash Gordan that Lucas loved so much.

And for the record, ESB has a happy ending. Han was in trouble yes, but they escaped from the Empire, recruited a new ally in Lando, and Luke’s power was rising. The music cue at the end is not “sad ending” music.

In ANH, it was wonderful to see Han fire only in self-defense, making him seem less like a bad guy! That added such depth to his character and showed there was really good in him all along.

The Jabba scene was also a great idea! Not only do we get to see Jabba extra early so we don’t have to wait so long to see him in ROTJ, but the important dialogue from the Greedo scene is reinforced and repeated so that we don’t forget that Han has to pay Jabba lots of money. That is important for ESB and ROTJ, otherwise people would probably forget why Jabba wanted Han. But not only that; the new Jabba was created with pristine, state-of-the-art CGI and looked just like the puppet!

The ring around the Death Star explosion really added power to the scene and was so much more satisfactory than the old, pathetic one which really looked like a model blowing up (but now it doesn’t because of the ring!).

I also really loved the nice blue tint they put over everything, as that added so much colour and atmosphere to the movie.

Also, it looks like Obi-Wan wears lipstick a lot, which I think is a clever nod to the transgender community, showing Lucasfilm’s acceptance of all people in the fan community.

In ESB, I was glad to see that the wampa got more screen time. The poor guy hardly made an appearance originally, but now we get to see him eat, confirming our suspicions that he actually ate the tauntaun. With its previous ambiguity, we didn’t know what happened to the tauntaun or why the wampa took Luke, but it is all put to rest for once and for all (for all because that crappy original original trilogy is gone now).

I was pleased to see that Boba Fett’s stupid voice was finally gone, and replaced by a real actor. The new one sounds like he’s half asleep, which works really well with Fett’s character, since it shows that he is bored and is so cool he doesn’t even care about what’s going on.

Vader’s new line replacing “Bring my shuttle!” is so much better. With the old line we were left wondering, “Where is Darth Vader going? Will the people on the Star Destroyer be sufficiently prepared for his arrival?” Now everything is clear and we don’t have to worry about it anymore.

Another change that I liked was the new Emperor/Vader scene. Now we don’t have to deal with Clive Revel and Elaine Baker and we have the handsome Ian replacing them…and with brand new dialogue that explains things better for the fans!

Hoth looked really did look cold with the new blue tint (everything else looked cold too, but whatever).

In ROTJ we are treated to an all new music video called “Lappy Neck” or something like that. The talent and CGI displayed in the video was so good that I think they should go back and replace Star Wars with a musical saga, replacing all puppets with CGI and adding a whole bunch of new ones who can pop out from behind trees and stuff and sing (I can see it now: Star Wars: A Musical Hope followed by The Tenor Strikes Back and Rehearsal of the Jedi and preceded by The Phantom Vocalist, Attack of the Notes, and Remix of the Sith).

I also love the new ending! Now we get to see Naboo and see that our beloved Gungans are OK and we can finally dispel the former notion that the collapse of the Empire was actually spread out over a long period of time. Now we know that everybody was happy as soon as the Emperor died, so the Empire couldn’t have been that bad after all, giving us more sympathy for the Imperials when we watch the movies again.

Perhaps best of all is that we get to see the tender young Anakin Skywalker, with the appearance of our beloved protaganist from the prequel trilogy, whereas before that scene was a “Who the heck is that guy?” moment, which detracted from the emotional impact of the scene. Now we see more clearly the tender love between father and son as young Anakin sheepishly smiles at his son and all former misunderstandings fall away. What better way to end the saga?

Overall, I am glad that Lucas just added a bunch of stuff without changing the story and keeping all the continuity errors and other stuff intact. Even better, it is really noticeable so that we don’t miss any exciting new stuff and we don’t get the original and the special editions mixed up.

I always imagined the Clone Masters were geniuses of genetic engineering; throwing supersoldiers, war beasts, etc. at the Republic forces.

An alternative idea I toyed with years ago was replacing the Trade Federation with the Clone Masters as a powerful semi-independent faction within the Republic. Maybe they supply the Republic with it’s troops (like in the PT) and then try to stage a coup. Meshes with the PT a little better.

I also toyed with the idea that the Mandalorians are creation of the Clone Masters, but I prefer them to be technologically advanced warrior nomads like in the old EU. Hell, maybe the Death Star was their idea.

Are we agreed that Leia definitely gets a red lightsaber?

The Force extends ones life - I always envisioned this. So, Obi-wan is around 100 years old in Star Wars and had fought in all three Clone Wars.

The devastation of The Republic after the Clone Wars is what leads to Palpatine taking over. The various large Guilds (Transport, Power, etc.) get him elected, thinking he is just a useful idiot and would make an ideal figurehead. He turns the tables of course.

EDIT: Episode 1 drops us into the middle of the last, and most devastating, of the Clone Wars.

I want to start a dedicated thread for discussing the background and backstory of the SW universe before we got the Prequel Trilogy.

I want to start with the whole situation on Tatooine. Was this Kenobi’s home planet? Was Owen actually his brother (stated as such, IIRC, in the novelization of ROTJ)? Did Anakin really want Luke to have his lightsaber “when he was old enough”? Does that mean Anakin abandoned the Jedi order to go into hiding?

Some thoughts, alternative ideas, and responses:

-let’s have blue be the color for all Jedi lightsabers, and red for all Sith, Luke gets green which symbolizes his New Jedi Order
-Palpatine is not Sith; he is something even more powerful in the Darkside
-Ventress dual-wielding ounds good; no lightpikes, double bladed blades or other silliness
-Clone Masters need to be the main enemy at some point (Episode 2 I guess); they come from outside the Galaxy and attack without warning; they are allied with the Mandalorians
-Boba Fetts suit/armour is a very light scout suit, not the heavy duty powered armor/exoskeletons worn by the front-line warriors
-there are multiple Clone Wars seperated by years of peace
-lets put the Jedi in white half-armour like Kenobi wears in the Clone Wars

LOL! I think we should re-title (is that a word?) this thread to “Terrible Obi-wan Kenobi Prequel Dialogue”.

Aside: When trying to hide your identity, someone should have told Obi-wan that changing your last name is probably a good idea. Of course, maybe in the SW universe “Kenobi” is as common as “Smith” (used to be).

I understand where you are coming from, but I think that was the point. Thrawn’s Empire is not going to be defeated militarily just like Palpatine’s Empire is not going to be defeated through sheer power in the Force. They both fail because of moral corruption.

The medium you choose certainly does affect what feels “right” or believable doesn’t it? Many scenes that I feel are effective and that I enjoy in the Clone Wars TV series I would scoff at and come across as silly in live action. The PT certainly felt like it wanted to be a cartoon, yes?
