AVENGERS:  Surprised by how much I liked it. Great pop-corn pic. First-rate screenplay. Whedon continues to impress. I discovered Firefly/Serenity only recently. There seems to be a sort of short'n'sweet, pointed comic-book kind of cadence to his writing voice. Everything neatly framed and quipy, expository, or poignant. It must make life a bit easier for the directors.

One niggle, I didn't comprehend the great threat to all earth until about four-fifths of the way through. Two or three quick establishing shots of the Army assembling or crying for blood or finishing up a ravaging of another helpless world might have created a 'Death Star plowing through the galaxy' sort of tension and peril.

MIB3: Liked it as I liked MIB2, but not as much as 1. The first had that fish-out-of-water-nothing-is-as-it-seems quality. J is our avatar as we discover the great deception with him. 2 and 3 necessarily goes over alot of ground already trod.

SW Episode III - Reign of the Dark Side (* unfinished project *)

I believe voice quality of actors is too frequently overlooked. It's the primary means of conveying their characters.

As for TPM, it never bothered me. The voice added an unusual quality and point of interest.

NP stands out as having a particulary fine voice (since maturity-post TPM) IMO.   I've heard her speak on the bonus discs and a few other occasions and her casual speaking voice is even better than her movie voice- so it's not the work of clever sound editors.

Recommended editing software for Windows

Hi, my first foray into the tech forum. I have a nagging question about frame rate editing:

Is there a commercial program that will remove, say, every 15th frame and automatically smooth the audio? I'm not talking about a PAL type speed-up or slow-down of the whole shmeal with the audio raising or lowering in pitch, I mean pulling out frames and associated audio at certain regular intervals or where it is especially possible and using morphing/blending type tech to smooth it.

The goal would be to reduce run-time (or in some instances increase it by doubling frames) and increase pace tension or drama without creating choppiness and distortion in the image or audio. :)

The War of the Stars Part II - The Future in Motion (Released)
Time

This sounds like a very interesting edit. Congrats on completing it. I'm looking forward to seeing it soon.

Getting ESB and ROTJ into 135 minutes is quite a feat.

This might give you a great base for a future edit.

ANH and ESB into 135, ending with a cliffhanger at cloud city?

ROTJ and the PT into 135 for a saga duology?

Could the PT be cut down to about 67 minutes (TG style) and still be coherent?

The second ep might begin with the crawl explaining that the problem at Cloud city and they found a new threat and then a shot of an SD and the SSD and the rescue of Luke and a quick shot of the new hand, then Vader at the DS followed by a quick entrance by the droids or Leia creeping up to free Han or Luke mysteriously walking into the place. To save alot of time, maybe Luke's mind trick does work on Jabba and the Dialogue could be changed to something like " FOOL! We have to let them go!". Alternatively, it doesn't work,  Luke is dropped through the trap door (skip the Rancor) and is simply brought back up to face Jabba with Han and a shortened Sarlac sequence.

Then the Luke at Ben's hut thing? Luke and Ben sit down to chat and we are launched into a retrospective back to the PT sequence of about 67 minutes and then back to the gang at the fleet to prepare DS attack?

It would be very difficult to pull-off in a nearly seamless way but it would be great fun to watch the entire saga in two reasonable action-adventure episodes over two evenings.

Anyway, just a thought. I love these great edit concepts!

Thanks for the great efforts! :)

Just curious, but has anyone here on the forums ever suggested or made a thread suggesting a single edit out the 3 prequels?

I feel like it's an idea that's been kicked around before but didn't see anything similar under 'search'.

I'll start working on my own 3-in-1 edit of the prequels, named Skywalker, this summer.  It is focused explicitly on Anakin and uses new music and colour correction to create a completely new atmosphere, one similar to the Twilight movies and The Hunger Games.  It will be part of a trilogy, where Part 2 will be focused on Luke and Part 3 is focused on both Luke and Anakin after Luke has discovered the truth about Vader.

Sounds great!  A 6n3 saga trilogy sounds like a great experience. A new experience with a very quick pace while keeping most of the great stuff.

Are you concerned about viewing order? 3 125 minute movies would allow an interesting presentation. About 85 minutes for ANH, 40 minutes for the first half of ESB ending with a cliff hanger (true identity of Yoda or hanging on the SD?.)  The second could be about 45 minutes of the last half ESB ending with a cliff-hanger, then 80 minutes of a TG style PT ending on a cliff-hanger.  The third movie could be 30-40 minutes of PT where everything goes to hell then 85-95 minute ROTJ.

WHAT HAPPENS AT 42:03???

My interest in these deep cuts is to indentify the absolutely essential for stories and re-writes.

I love every second of the theatrical Cantina scene and I wince at the thought of cutting anything.

Strictly for shaving every possible second:  The droids could be left outside (no "We don't want...":( )      Quick cuts back and forth between aliens and Luke making his way to the bar and ordering a drink (dizzying descent down the rabbit hole.)       Quick "He doesn't like you."  "I'll be careful then."   "You'll be DEAD!"     The entire Ben with the sabre and bargain with Han.   Quick "Going somewhere Solo?"  "I was just on my way to see Jabba" "It's too late. He put a price on your head so high that now every bounty hunter in the galaxy is hunting for you. He'd rather have your ship."  "Over my dead body."  "That's the idea. I've been looking forward to this."  "I'll bet you have."

Could do a diagnal wipe between Torture Droid and "I want to go...."  Starting in the upper left hand corner and cropping the two shots so that once the wipe line reaches about mid point, you would have the two moons in the upper left, Luke in the high center left and Leia in the Low center right ;)

An extremely rad edit for time would be to cut Yoda entirely 8-O =(   The Wampa cave could be cut with cobbled Ben audio encouraging him to use the Force and then before Han appears something like "So you can be trained by me."  Everything possible to suggest that Ben has been continuing Luke's training from the Battle of Yavin. Luke could make it back to the Fleet and have little reactions to what Ben is telling him in his fighter until torture and we see Luke's fighter peel away from the fleet and Ben calls after him about not being able to interfere and to not give in. With more ambition and awesome skill, the Dagobah background could be replaced and Luke could be aboard ship practicing under Ben's instruction or preping the fighter for rescue.

For Han and Leia, maybe the ship is damaged but could still make one jump. shave every possible second from each shot. The gang never goes outside the ship, just shaking and Minoks flying around. They would reach Bespin much more quickly.

Info Wanted: How to cut unimportant stuff and still make sense?
Time

I've tried to imagine a 135 minute OT. I've got ANH (GOUT) down to about 60-70 minutes while keeping as much great stuff as possible.

There's alot of quick cuts between shots for a very fast pace. Eliminate everything not absolutely nec. or very cool.

The greatest change was to cut out the Jawas and the Farmstead:( Nearly everything we learn there we learn again from Luke and Obi. The light is altered so that the droids land in the late afternoon and then walk through the night. At 11:00, in the early morning sunrise, 3PO finds Lukes speeder in the distance instead of the sand crawler, shot of farmstead and vaporators and then 26:50-27:17 Owen and Beru wondering where Luke went. Then 27:24-38:43 Speeder to R2, 3PO repeats Obi's name and then says something like "Master Luke is OUR new rightful owner and you better just do as he says or he'll...", add the STs finding Droid evidence while they move to Ben's hut, cut Luke's "I saw part of a message". After 38:42, add 25:24-25:48 sunset (change backgroud to Ben's place, then torture droid, then 41:49-42:03 "I want to go with you..." Ben's place at night with maybe two moons behind Luke (slight hint that Luke senses torture) Then 42:03...

Just saw it. In a new premium theater.

The CGI of the creatures was fantastic! The closest to utterly real I've seen. I completely bought into their reality. Backgrounds worked well as a desert environment. I couldn't tell whether it was all CGI or some digitally enhanced footage. Those CGI guys have come a long way.

The score was magnificent on the premium system!

What is your take on PT villains?
Time

I liked EatonB's take on Palpy and his relationship with Ani. Palps honestly tries to help Ani and isn't lying when he claims to have some ability to assist in saving Padame. My take on the Sith relationship is that there is a great degree of loyalty amoung badies up until the apprentice begins to feel powerful enough to take over. The Sith are less one-dimensional when they have an honest passionate concern for each other.

I've suspected that in a prior iteration of the prequel story arc Padme was a Force-Wielder. My interpretation of the end of ROTS was that Padme's body had become dependent on Force energy and when she concieved twins by another Force-Wielder they began to drain the Force from Padme's body. Maybe this could explain why Force-Wielders are discouraged from marrying each other? Palpy could then step in and honestly help keep her alive with his knowledge from Plagueis.

And crucially, this practice of 'non-action' (or - more appropriately - correct, undisruptive action) can be applied to confrontational happenings as well, while such a notion may seem inconsistent at first. Instead of 'rushing to face' your opponent (as Luke did with Vader in Empire), you remain still, be at one, 'use the Force', and allow what will happen to happen, as it were; Yoda himself never tells Luke that he must actively strive to seek Vader out and conquer him (and indeed chastises Luke for such a course of action in Empire), but rather serenely states in Jedi that 'face him you will' - it will be so dictated, life will conspire to have it arranged, it is the ‘will of the Force’ perhaps, and how Luke handles this event is, instead, what is central.

It's interesting to consider the way it relates to Jedi prophecy.

I recall someone who believed that Allah and the Prophet had arranged a very clever test for the obedience and submission of Muslims:

The stones (video screens and silicon chips) and the trees (raging nations) would cry out to come kill the Jews behind them.

Muslims are commanded to respect and learn from the People of the Book (Christians and Jews.) Allah had granted the Holy Land as a possession of the Jews.

Would Muslims remain obedient and take no harmful action no matter how provoked they may feel? No matter how much the deceivers incite them?

3D STAR WARS for the masses...has ARRIVED!
Time

   ^This

I had major doubts about 2D to 3D conversion. They were dispelled. Suddenly, I was noticing many details in the background not registered before. The 3D made the CGI seem even more substantial. Some of the space shots gave me vertigo :) The sweeping visuals were enhanced. The logos and crawl were spectacular against the depths of space.

In all, it was nice to see those enhanced visuals with the magnificent JW themes.

Looking forward, I think AOTC will definitely be a worthwhile experience :)

QUESTIONS FOR THE MUSICALLY INCLINED
Time
Thanks,      Yeah, I doubt anyone would want to reinvent everything.       This was something I thought as a kid. Afterwards, it became more of a thought exercise to imagine what would happen if everyone in the world suddenly forgot all that was known about tuning and had to start from scratch. Would they recreate the present arrangements because they are, indeed, ideal?       I stacked things one side or t'other EEEAA because it seemed to produce some easier chords and a possibility of thinning the neck for the thumb.       There was a variation of EAEA for guitar. E-A-E-Eoc higher-A   EAEEA. The seven string version ran Eoc down-E-Aoc down-A-Eoc up-E2ocs up-Aoc up  EEAAEEA or an 8 string with the high A doubled at the same octave EEAAEEAA. The high A would be a fifth lower that the high E that preceded it. Anyone want to step up? ;)

QUESTIONS FOR THE MUSICALLY INCLINED
Time
Hi again,       There were other reasons for selecting this tuning. I placed a value (maybe too high?) upon having open strings in common with the standard guitar and orchestral strings tunings. The low E and low A are common to the guitar and Dbass. The high E remains for guitar. The high A is common between EAEA, CGDA, and GDAE.       Also, I wanted it to be as effective as possible to drop to low C with extensions for violin, cello, and Dbass (I've come to think of instruments optimized for EAEA and extensions as the violi, viole', and Violo.) If I had the money of a Gates or Buffet, it would be fun to create a school to produce an orchestra and chamber groups with a new tuning and 3 types of instruments instead of 4.      A variation for guitar was E-E^1oc-E^2ocs-A^1oc-A. This would place the higher strings in the center and produce a v^v arrangement. I couldn't perform a crude test with my standard tuned guitar so I have no idea. In a seven string it would run Ev1oc strung close to E-E^1oc-E^2ocs-A^1oc-A-Av1oc EEEEAAA.      I've wondered about creating a slight bow to the guitar bridge to raise the high E in the center.      I've wondered if it would be possible to run the low E so it drops over the edge, runs along the side of the board and is accessable to the thumb or hooked finger ;/      Anyway, I tend to begin with a conclusion, create as many workable propositions as I can, select my favorite props, and then spend most of the time trying to eliminate the less favored propostions. This makes trying to track and remember my propositions and conclusions...interesting ;)       Later :)

QUESTIONS FOR THE MUSICALLY INCLINED
Time
Hi,    I apologize for creating an entire thread for this. I have noticed that there are members here who deal with music and, I suppose, would have a basic understanding of stringed instruments.    When I was a boy, my aunt gave me her practice guitar. I decided to read some instruction manuals and other information in preparation for learning to to play. I also had thoughts of taking up violin or cello at some point. I learned about alternate tunings, twelve string and tenor guitars, basic chord forms and methods. I was trying to find the easiest and quickest way for a complete novice to advance and then learn other instruments. Life intervened and and I dropped the idea- but not before I had formed a few nagging questions.      I'm too embarrassed to ask this of professonal guitarists and I don't want to join another site just for this. If you will forgive my near total ignorance and some exceedingly stupid questions...     My goal was to find a tuning that would work best for a beginner. I wanted it to cover the full range of the standard six string with standard tuning, make everything as logical as possible, simple (simplistic) for learning and remembering scales, to reduce the number of strings necessary, to accomodate the widest variety of hand forms (I can stretch a tenth on piano, but my pinkey is short and my thumb is set back relative to my other long slender fingers), ease chord formation, and transfer as much as possible to the orchestral strings. To accomplish all that I had to go outside the box and I couldn't find examples of anything quite like it.    I had finally settled on an open tuning that ran EAEAE low-to-high. However, I thought of stringing EEEAA across the fretboard (EEEA#A# has  a nice symmetry, but I'm not sure if the stepped up A#s would work well open.)  E,E^1oc,E^2ocs,A,A^1oc.    I experimented in altered standard tuning as best I could with my completely untutored and pathetically limited imagination. The high E in the middle with the low A and then high A following was certainly awkward with regard for standard tuning. However, I imagined there might be several advantages to more than compensate...    5 strings, 3Es or 2As might be played together as though doubled, the low E and E^1oc might be strung in close courses as on a 12 string (low E with thumb and further thinning the neck) learn only E and A, low E to high E as with standard tuning, no broken fourths, some easier chord forms with opportunities to play neighboring strings as though doubled, and some easier reach and thumbwork on the fret board. I'd hoped it could be as easy to learn and play as a four string in perfect fifths while producing six string sound. Also, a seven string guitar EEEEAAA might be possible on a six string neck.        For the orchestral strings, EEAA might be possible, but EAEA low to high might be better with a bow. I was drawn to this tuning because the violin GDAE isn't my preference. I prefer the lower deeper tones of the violin and find it's highest notes too painfully piercing. The viola seems a little too low and throaty. Down a 3rd on the low end and down a fifth on the high end seems about right to me. The cello tuned up a third might make a better solo instrument. Dbass would remain in the same range.     Anyway, sorry for all the rambling. I'm sure there are simple and obvious reasons for why that tuning is impractical. I guess I'm asking for those reasons so this stops nagging at me.     If you made it this far you've given more consideration than this deserves. Thanks :)
