The Unofficial Complete REVISITED SAGA Ideas and Random Discussion Thread
Time
Maybe the edits could be prepared in a way to allow for episodes of about 90, 120, and 135 minute lengths.  Anything that allows the skipping of a half-dozen steps might not hurt the process too much. I've never broken one of these apart and tried to rebuild. I've just fiddled with some nobs to adjust audio and brightness, so I really can't say.

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place

"Deviancy" is defined by the Natural Order and is therefore objective. Everyone deviates from the established order in some form (Christianity calls this "sin"). Because I oppose undue intrusions into private lives I actually support the right of consenting adults to engage in deviancies in a reasonably private setting. Things go to hell in a million different ways when these matters are pushed into the public square.   The Puritans would be appalled by the modern consumer culture which has more in common with the "French" decadence they were rejecting. Ultimately, when it all shakes out, the "Reasonable Price" is determined by a free people exchanging in a "Free" market (strong but strictly limited regulations.)

The Puritans were far from ideal. Peoples of the past must be measured against their backdrop. Aggrandization of deviancy has catastrophic consequences in our first world, 21st century plenty. The least bit of sexual licence in the period before Germ Theory was horrifying beyond comprehension. The Puritans saved themselves and others from rapine and agonizing death. The Puritans actually represented an advancement in regard and condition for women in the most important respects. All were expected to become literate in many Puritan communities in order to read the Bible and teach children. All women were expected to be more than bar maids and whores. I would say that they celebrated "Frugality" rather than "Poverty". The "Protestant Work Ethic" has lifted all of humanity out of the worst deprivation.

^Interesting thought. The other moral problem is why did the most powerful living Jedi sit in a swamp for 20 years while the galaxy burned. There wasn't anything he could do beyond Dagobah? I suppose it could have been addressed with some quick expo about Yoda making such a strong impression in the Force that he could instantly be found beyond the Force-obscuring power of the bog world, thus blowing any operation and bringing the combined might of the Emp and Vader down on him. Luke refusing to return would help with logistics, certainly. Ben would need to stay close to protect Luke. ;/

I still am trying to figure out the Kobiyashi Maru test. Every situation is very different. different characters and relative forces and positions. I suppose flag officers who have experienced these difficulties would want to test cadets for their determination to complete their mission and/or save their crew in the most extreme circumstances. The ability to find surprising solutions would be a bonus. That, or it's just a clever script device.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time
Whatever they had in mind, they should have dropped it when they didn't bring Kirstie back. The whole Saavik-David subplot was very offputting. ST has delved a little too far into the loss of loved ones. TWOK Spock worked because there was a promise of bringing him back. They had already sunk to their nadir, TSFS was about the journey back up. A black-eyed full-blood Vulcan chick with a red-shirt partner could have carried that water. Protomatter could have been an unexpected problem. The subtle art of getting us to care enough but not too much before bumping em off. Too bad "Adventure" couldn't have been menuevered into position. "I...HAVE HAD...ENOUGH...OF YOU!!!" would have had at least as much heft if it was about sheer exasperation without any revenge.

Saw STID. Have questions. So Carol Marcus and Kahn are both weapon designers for daddy, they never knew each other in the beforetime? Is that why daddy wanted to blast the guy? :p I love that Kirk had a kickass StarFleet mom. Did she have some special abilities that had her sent out? No flashbacks or walk-ons to help push Kirk forward? The one torpedo that  freaked out Scotty, was that the one stuffed with unethical protomatter? :p

Awkins has obviously been GREATLY harmed by experiences in his environment. He has dedicated himself to the destruction of all external standards of ethics and morality and decency. Evolutionary Psychology is a license for ANYTHING. Rule by men and not by true Law is horrifying. What's wrong with a standard of old pervs keeping COMPLETELY away from underage and vulnerable kids? Why shouldn't they suffer great penalty if they refuse? I would agree that past and present societies have almost ligitimized it, but why not ADVANCE ourselves and clearly establish NO MORE! The "Liberals" and "Progressives" are bizarro and totally regressed to the most base, cruel, savagery. True cilivilization is a society ruled by strict LAW designed to create a space of decency with security for the children to develope.    Israel has a large Arab population that counts as citizens. One could argue that how we got to this state is "unfair", but I would rather be a voting Arab in Isreal than a denizen of Iraq, Syria, Egypt....
