Williams Says He ‘Hopes’ to Work on New Star Wars Trilogy

While I'm not in total agreement, I see where HotRod is coming from. I've been listening to the Radio Dramas which uses the original JW music. It amazes me how easily I recognize the part of the film the song originally played in, regardless of the fact that it is simply a reprise of an oft-repeated theme. It's surprising not only how iconic the main themes are, but also how memorable and individualized each background piece seems to be.

I can't say the same for the PT, though to give JW the benefit of a doubt I'll admit that I've not seen it nearly as many times.

I agree.  I even feel that ROTJ even had a lot more "filler" or "incidental" music that, even when I hear it today, doesn't stir scene memory for me.  For Ep IV and V I can listen to the scores and remember/recite lines like crazy.

I still think it was mostly Lucas that butchered the scores to Ep I and II--maybe even III; I don't think Williams composed crap that couldn't be used; I think Lucas couldn't stop changing the film and it would have been too expensive to get Williams to rewrite music and/or adjust cues to fit the new scenes, plus re-recording the orchestra would have been costly or time consuming--even with today's digital music editing abilities.

Williams Says He ‘Hopes’ to Work on New Star Wars Trilogy
Time

from jwfan.com: “We’re about to play Star Wars [audience interrupts with cheers] and each time we play it, I’m reminded of the first time we played it decades ago.  Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I’d have to revisit the themes…and years later another trilogy.  Now we’re hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016…so I need to make sure I’m still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George…[more cheers].”

Is the theater where you saw Star Wars still standing ?
Time

They are not.  I first saw Star Wars at Q Cinema 4 in Millard, Nebraska.  It expanded to Q Cinema 6, then it became Douglas Q Cinema 9. It was closed and demolished in 2008.

The other was Indian Hills Theater in Omaha.  Saw Star Wars in 70mm. Unfortunately, that landmark was demolished in 2001 due to high renovation costs (and pure greed).

Q Cinema 4 is where I first saw Tommy Jung's poster before the movie came out. That image alone made me want to see the movie.

George Lucas leaves Lucasfilm

The Godfather was eventually treated to a restoration in 2008-----but it was in a severe state of disrepair prior to that point(even though new prints had been struck for the 25th anniversary in 1997)-----but Coppola did not recieve the same type of abuse that Lucas continues to get.

Do you not understand that Coppola, then and now, has NO ownership over the Godfather elements? They are the property of Paramount. Always. (and in fact when they were being neglected, Coppola was literally bankrupt). I can't tell if you're straining to make some mysterious, bogus point or just doing schtick.

We can thank Steven Spielberg for the Godfather restoration; another filmmaker who has decided not to tamper with his movies (any more, that is).

The music of the Original Trilogy vs the music of the Prequel Trilogy
Time

The biggest problem with why the Prequel music may not be as good lies with--I feel--Lucas and the way he edited and re-edited (and re-edited and re-edited) those movies.  Even after Williams recorded the scores the movies were changed; subsequently the scores were changed.  The Phantom Menace music was butchered beyond belief-- the Ultimate Edition Soundtrack is proof of that.  Plus, wasn't TPM music re-used in AOTC instead of some of the original music written for it?

I thought there were good music moments in TPM; ROTS was the best Prequel soundtrack (probably because it used so much Original Trilogy music) and AOTC did pretty much suck.

It's Official: George Lucas hates his fans :P
Time

I think a few things are going to help play out whether or not we'll ever see the GOUT released the way fans want it.

1) When the Indiana Jones movies are released on Blu with no changes and it sells like hotcakes

2) When E.T. is released on Blu in the original version like Spielberg hints (hell, I'll take it the way the DVD was released)

3) When more of Lucas' contemporaries release their movies on Blu with either multiple versions or just the original only (see Spielberg and his take on how his movies are put out on Blu from here on out)

4) When the 3D Saga doesn't do as well as they hoped (didn't I read an article somewhere that TPM will be the only 3D release because demand isn't there?)

And as a final note, I did not take away from the article that Lucas is okay with fan edits as long as his name isn't on it.  I think his "my name on it" statement and the comment about fan edits were convoluted into something else that he didn't imply.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

BD not going to last as a format?  What?

Yes, you truly have to watch them on a large TV.  My sister has a small, 720p TV and says that she can't see the difference.  On my 40" 1080p it's very noticeable.  What's been the best to watch are the movies that either have been restored (The Godfather--yes, it's patchy in spots but some scenes are freaking gorgeous) have a great transfer (CE3K; plus the print was in great condition) or movies that were filmed hi-def in the first place.

Remember, BDs hold more information so less compression...

I A/B'ed Blade Runner and it's definitely noticeable.  I'm anxious to check out Taxi Driver esp. with the 4K transfer.

To me, the greatest joy will be to see E.T. released on Blu-Ray with the original version only (Spielberg apparently will not release the revised one, he said) as a statement to his good friend that you just don't screw with your original works. This, coming after the Indiana Jones trilogy with no CGI improvements or dialog changes.

Lucas will forever be delusional and never satisfied with his movies.  I could give a flying fuck about the 3-D versions of the Saga.

The logic doesn't follow, but I suppose it's a bit of a nod towards the fact that he knows what's going on in this end of the fan community.

I think it's also a nod to the fact that Robert Harris personally knows of a print in a existence that can be used for a BD version of the original Ep IV.  He's offered to restore it himself, with no response from Lucasfilm (surprise surpise).
