4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I personally think the BR of Close Encounters of the Third Kind looks pretty fantastic, and this was released the same year as ANH.  I'm sure it didn't have as many theatrical runs and the negative didn't suffer the same fate as ANH, but it's worth viewing (and kind of a gauge) when the sentiment "I don't want to watch the movies as they were back then" comes up.

On the contrary, there are a number of classic films that I am not a fan of, but it would bother me deeply if they weren't preserved.  I think that it's more about many people not seeing any importance in films other than just for their entertainment value.

Agreed.  I really don't care much for "The Alamo" but it bothers me that MGM has dragged their heels on it for so long, making this film almost impossible to restore properly.

The really bad color issues were introduced at the end of the line, the big fumble right before the goal, when they sat down with George to decide the final color. maybe the samples in the video were from earlier  in the pipeline. After the scan (from the negative that had no saber blades at all) and after the new blades were added on, but before everything else.

Which still boggles my mind b/c when doing the SE back in '97 George claimed to have a Technicolor print at his house color timed the way he liked it.

Wait--"George claimed"…and I'm done.

I'm gonna throw this out there and say that my fingers are crossed that Disney has consulted Robert A. Harris on this restoration.  Remember that he offered to do a restoration on the original trilogy for free. On top of that, I believe he's pretty good about keeping mum on projects.

I'm perfectly happy to be proven wrong, given that Reliance Media might be involved.  Either way, I think Disney will give us the best presentation possible and not just do a 4K DNR hack job.

The Changes That Nobody Talks About

It surprises me, though, that on a forum such as this, where fans will pick up on anything and everything (from colour coding to the different fonts used for the subtitles), no-one appears to have noticed the dialogue change that I mentioned. Or has it become de rigeur to just post endlessly about the changes that we don't like? Perhaps that's why the audio cock up with the music during the Death Star battle on the DVD of A New Hope drew so much stick and yet, when Matthew Woods changed it back to how it was originally, there was barely a murmour.

I seem to remember Bill Hunt mentioned the audio fix when he got to go to Skywalker Ranch to preview the Blu-Rays.

The Prequel Era Has Ended, Long Live the Original Trilogy!
Time

We are now in exciting times, but I will say that it's nothing like it was in '77 because back then, we didn't know what to expect. Upon its release we had one film, a novel tie-in, Topps cards and very little merchandise (and some of it was bootlegged crap--e.g.,"Darth VADAR Lives").  Pales in comparison to today…well, the film WAS unaltered back then...

Well...Lucas DID film scenes with 'N Sync as Jedi in AOTC at his daughter's behest before cutting them later.

I thought that was another fishy story from the former TFN admin who said Yoda was going to break wind in ROTS? Did any photos of them in costume ever surface?

Yeah, I heard that story was 100% BS

If George had only changed Special effects for the SE and DVD, would people have complained as much?

I still don't think that any of it really needed a makeover. It was nice to see, but when it was all said and done, the movies were and still are strong enough to stand on their own. I think Lucas suffers from confidence issues. Or money-making issues.

When I was watching Star Wars earlier this week (the original version, duh!) I thought about the part where the ships take off. You know, that first shot when they leave the planet, and the lookout's in the tower. In the special edition, the CG ships turning around right next to him looked pretty cool, but I noticed they just didn't have the urgency those little bright dots in the distance had.

I completely agree.  That, and John Williams' score seems to fit better with the ships in the distance quickly taking off.  The SE version of that always seems out of place with the music to me.

Making of Return of the Jedi (the book) Thread
Time

So, the folks at TFN (sorry for bringing them up) have posted their review of the The Making of ROTJ.  Naturally, some readers blasted the review for including references to The Secret History of Star Wars.  Some consider that akin to The National Enquirer.

I responded--why, I don't know--and got some really ridiculous replies

Apparently it's okay to bash people if they are dead, but while they're living you have to candy coat everything, be nice to them and not speak too much of the truth.

And since I bad-mouthed Lucas a bit I'm now a "people like you."  Good.

Now I get why TFN'ers are ridiculed so much on this site. I feel more at home here.

George was preparing The Star Wars long before 1976 though...I think??

I imagine some of his Flash Gordon adaptation ideas ended up in the final film too.

To bring something fresh to the table probably does take a bit of time.

He was, and we now know that EpIV was ORIGINALLY supposed to come out in Christmas of '76 and they weren't ready.  I'm gonna guess that even with a Dec '15 release they'll be well into EpVIII and it could potentially be released in May. But, who knows.  I just want a released film, and a good one.  May-Dec….doesn't matter.
