That guy with no name, have you considered replacing “evil” with “Sith”, or changing it to “The evil Sith lord Darth Vader” in the opening crawl?

“Sith” is more of a prequel term. I know it’s mentioned in the ANH deleted scene, but still. It’s only ever used in the prequels. The audience at the time of watching ESB don’t even know what a “Sith” is.

The Empire Strikes Back - Adywan Color Grade Reconstruction.
Time

Way back when Adywan released a color-corrected version of the ESB Blu-ray (or maybe HDTV I’m unsure) even though it’s not the best quality or bitrate, it is the closest we’ve come to pure Adywan-corrected ESB.

Now, for this reconstruction; I’ve taken an HQ rip of the 2011 Blu-ray (that I made myself) and overlayed the color information of the Adywan Color Corrected ESB. Now we have a High-quality Adywan color-corrected ESB!

Example:
Raw Blu-ray;

Oh this is a shot that i’ve always hated in the SE. Not only are the added stormtroopers wearing ROTJ helmets, but the compositing is horrendous. The original footage just doesn’t blend in at all with the new. No shadows or floor reflections, the new foreground stormtroopers look very soft/ blurry, yet the troops in the background on the gantry are sharper and in focus. The problem was i just couldn’t replace it with a shot from 4k77 because it stands out as being a different source and lower quality, even with grain reduction ( which to eliminate the grain to a point needed for it to match the blu-ray sources would destroy so much detail). But there’s a lot more software that can be used lately that has enabled me to enhance the 4k77 footage to get it to the quality of the blu-rays. I did try using topaz video enhance AI , which is a great starter to use to help with the grain problem, but that just couldn’t handle it without giving it a weird effect. But splitting the scene into an image sequence i was able to run them through Topaz photo AI and this worked so much better. Of course this was only used as a starting point and can’t be solely used because of anomalies these AI software introduce to the image ( you only have to look at the latest so called restorations of James Cameron’s films for the 4K releases to know what i’m talking about). So there was still a lot more work to do , like dust/ scratch repair, but i have now been able to swap out the SE shot for the original.

That look’s great Ady! great job!

Hello. This project was supposed to be ready already on September 12, 2024. But due to the lack of time, I had to delay it to 19th day of September, but that also was too little. And eventually the entire project entered a pause. The last time I did any major things to this edit was around May 2024 when I started this project, it had a OT.com post.

CURRENT SITUATION AND BACKGROUND

I started working on this on May 2024, and I used the 2019 Disney edition as the master, but then it took more space than my device could handle, so it was paused until August. I used a new master, but due to the delays, it was paused again.

Now, as of January 2025, I will restart this project. I recently finished the best version for my 1997 preservation, and I have a device which has double the amount of storage the old one had, so I set 20 Gigabytes to be the absolute maximum of this project, and will tend to use only about 10GB. I will use the 2019 Disney editions and reconstruct the 1997 editions using those. The 1997 editions I restored are not usable as the master of this project due to their 1997 quality, so I will reconstruct those using the 2019 master. Many of you will probably ask why can’t I just use 4K97 as the master, and the answer is that it takes too much space, and its colours are difficult to correct, not to mention the German audio in 4K97_V. And the other possible source would be ImBateman’s reconstruction, but ImBateman is not active or sharing the links, and MySpleen torrents have a low amount of seeders, so I will have to reconstruct them myself. I will use the least space-taking 4K77, 4K80 & 4K83 scans to replace changes made after 1997. I will also use the lowest space taking but highest quality clip of Jabba in ANH. I will then colourcorrect these to my liking. I will export the film scans as 720p 24fps. I will then use those 720p scans as the master of my fanedit. So now I will just have to make the changes. I will upload the 1997 reconstructed master somewhere private for myself and delete it from my device, but I will not share it, because it is only used for this fanedit. But unless many of you want to use it, I can share. The previosly mentioned process will start sooner or later.

TGWNN's 4K77 fully remastered (WIP)
Time

Alright here’s the first finished sequence of TGWNN’s 4K77 BETA.
It’s in 1080p, just like the full BETA will be. The source footage is in 4K though. Just like the finished release will be. The final release will also have MAJOR Dust/scratches removal unlike this BETA, which has minor to none.
The next sequence I’ll release will be the death star escape. so watch out for that. The finished BETA will follow in a few months (this is very time consuming).

enjoy. I’ll post a comp soon.

Also, there was a burgeoning underground market in Laserdisc rips prior to the GOUT. Whether this was the intent or not, after the GOUT, Joe Average wasn’t interested in Laserdisc rips anymore. It became an enthusiast-only market.

Also, is it correct that there exists a 2K scan of the original restored print made in 97? we know it was scanned unaltered after they physically resorted it. is it correct to assume that file still exists somewhere?

It felt more like he was throwing OOT fans his scraps, since it was such a low quality version and a “bonus feature” but I guess this is old news. Of course now time has passed and you have strange people that believe this laserdisc rip represents the quality of that theatrical cuts.

This might have been his intention, to confine the memory of the original cuts to that inferior quality.

Lucas basically ‘confirmed’ that intention during the Cannes 2024 interview:

https://youtu.be/AHXLsHOdPiw?si=sUS8sW1F_aEkUfed&t=3190

I love how he’s outright lying here. The fully restored original negative of the films existed for a short while in 1997 before they physically inserted the new material into it. and they even scanned that negative in 2K! Right now in the Lucasfilm archive, there exists a 1997 2K scan of the original restored negative, before any alteration. why didn’t they release that?

The actual state of the negative and whether or not there are sufficient good quality sources to restore the film to its original state lie within Lucasfilm itself.

Of course, we can’t leave things up to chance seeing how since 1997 the entire point of Lucas was to erase that the originals ever existed. They were a rough draft, a work in progress he was forced to release, and he was unhappy with them and so, and on.

It’s completely unconscionable to leave it up to Loc and BFI to have to rescue these movies, as is 4k77 wouldn’t even exist if George had done the right thing.

That’s exactly my thoughts. This was all George’s purposeful doing. If he had actually wanted to release them, he would’ve.

I’m currently working on posting a short sequence of full restored video, but in the meantime
I wanna explain something about the DNR I’ll be doing…
Instead of just applying a blanket layer of DNR, which will cause static grain and detail flicker.
Instead, each element of the frame has to be masked out, and DNRed separately, to minimize any detail loss.
Then, it’s color-corrected, and a thin layer of that original grain is put back in after it’s been refined.

and then you get something like this:

(the screenshot desaturates the image slightly)

Here’s a video comp:

There are still some kinks to iron out (Chewie fur problem, Dust and scratches)

The 2006 is quite a strange facsimile, as its not at all the theatrical cut. Its just the Definitive collection with worse more compressed audio of the 1993 mix, with the 1977 crawl tacked onto the beginning.

Still its pre–Special Edition if not quite the real deal.

Earlier releases did have the theatrical 35mm mix the Dolby Stereo, so they must just have been incredibly lazy. Seeing how fans could retrieve the audio off of laserdiscs. Or even VHS.

I’m getting up there in age and even I haven’t seen the pre 1981 cut on 35mm in the cinema. It hasn’t been shown in over 40 years. Nobody has seen it since 1980. Beyond an odd screening here or there, but not more wide and broad, no restored print exists.

Interesting, Now I understand why TN1 had such a problem with the 4k77 crawls… If I’m not mistaken they used a different source for that.

this will likely be the last project I put out on Original Trilogy but I thank all the people who have helped me with my projects on these forums and supported these scans.

If it’s not prying too much, can you tell us why you’re putting this behind you (is it here only, or other places also)? I can’t help but wonder if it’s akin to TVArchive and a few others leaving out of some form of being fed up with being nagged too much or similar, or maybe it’s more like you’ve personally simply done all the projects you wish to do—are sated—and that’s that?

I don’t think these forums are fit for my projects anymore with leaks, people begging me for scans when they aren’t finished, etc. I respect the community that has helped me in the past and now, but with this forum being open to everyone it makes it hard to get support without bad actors taking advantage of that kindness.

I’m pretty sure not including “WIP” or “Unfinished” doesn’t help things. People “begging” you, is not that big of a deal… as long as digital comments don’t cause you physical harm.

Yeah I seem to remember the GOUT version wasn’t a 1977 copy but just had the A New Hope title removed just so they could say ‘here you go idiots this is what you wanted right?’

Ok, I’m glad you told me. He treats it’ as If it’s a separate “cut” so he can expand his list of “cuts” to make the argument that there is no definitive “original” version. the man is insane.

Laserdiscs had the 1981 version of the crawl, which had the ANH name added.

The GOUT appears to have a different version of the crawl and opening shot which doesn’t include this added title, but is identical to the laserdiscs (in terms of what is presented) following that. It was mastered from the same source as the 1993+ laserdiscs, save for the opening shot of ANH.

Thanks man.

are the gouts and the laserdisc exactly the same, or are their differences, I’m currently writing a huge video essay about the Special editions, Star Wars preservations, and those horrible videos by Rick Worley and Nerdonomous. in Rick’s video he claims that the gout has a different crawl from the laserdisc and that the laserdisc has the updated “a new hope crawl” so that he can label the Gout as it’s “own cut” and make the list of Pre-SE cuts bigger to make the originals seem less important. I think this is BS. But too tired to check. can someone tell me?

If anyone is interested in reading the WIP rough essay script here it is:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ipU48nABwFM9NrHiFmiJhumCmMn-WCmyXMmaAmRYqRo/edit?usp=sharing
please inform me about any factual errors.
I’ll keep updating it whenever I am finished with another section.
Cheers.
