Star Wars: A New Hope DEVASTATOR EDITION (V.2 a WIP)

The explosion looks “fuller” if that makes sense – it’s a much better explosion than the original. One tiny thing that stood out though (which may be so small as to be deemed entirely irrelevant):
The two other TIE’s are moving forward towards the screen, yet the explosion seems to be locked into place; wouldn’t the explosion be steadily moving away from the camera?

yeah I know, but the original explosion was locked in place, so there isn’t much I can do I’m afraid.

I just realized this shot is flipped:
look at r2’s hologram thingy.

Nice catch! Chewies belt is flipped back to the correct shoulder after that, so it was just that one shot.

Although I kind of understand why they did that from an editing perspective.

yeah, hope Adywan sees this…

From Ady on Facebook:

“Hi Everyone.
Sorry for the lack of updates/ communication, but i haven’t been too well for a while. So, due to this, i have been unable to do any work on the PC. Feeling a little better now so i’ve restarted work on Revisited. Because of this , my plans for a mid year release of ANH:R HD is out of the window. Plus i will be adding shots to the battle of Yavin for a slightly extended TIE battle ( not as long as the SD version though), so this will add to the remaining shots left to be done. So, as i’ve lost a couple of months worth of worktime and adding these shots, i am unable to give you a ballpark figure of a release date for ANH. But i will keep you updated on what is left to do as i go along.”

oh, guess I missed that.

At the beginning of the movie, there’s a continuity error with two matte paintings that are meant to be the same hangar exterior, but from different angles.

See how there’s a hangar missing on the far right of the second shot that was in the first shot?

Never noticed that, wow keen eye.

Hello, Star Wars fans!
This edit will be a mixture of the SE and The original version, With some additives of course. The main source of this edit is The 2011 Blu-ray release, Color corrected by Adywan in 2018. I am hoping this edit will be a more purist version of the famous “Adywan Revisited”. All the basic info including the change list, Will be listed down below.
-That Guy With No Name.

is this edit with the aspect ratio 2.35:1 or is it the width of widescreen and length of fullscreen?

Yes, it retains it’s original aspect ratio within 1920x1080

At the end of the day, the worst part of that shot is when Lando seems to walk outside the reach of the stage lights 😂, I wonder how adywan’s gonna fix that.

Maybe have him walk ‘under’ something like a parked B-Wing if he decides to ‘fix’ the matte painting (just a random thought). But perhaps there are easier solutions.

that might work actually.

Honestly, my number one ask is to replace that matte painting shot when Han is departing with the strike team and talking to Lando with the falcon in the background. It is the most obvious matte shot in the entire saga in my opinion. I am still shocked Lucas didn’t tinker with it during the special edition. Especially in HD it always stands out to me like a sore thumb to me.

It’s hardly noticeable

I think the problem is they used a matte for the entire backdrop. They usually work a lot better when there’s other objects that help blend in to it. Like if the Falcon was a model, the rest as a matte wouldn’t be so bad. That poor ship is rough looking though.

https://youtu.be/hFadMn0EuO0?t=220

I think it’s a lot worse in motion. Also, the left side behind Lando looks so flat. And something is weird with the perspective, especially if you focus on the bottom of the frame when they start moving around near the end of the shot.

There are serveral glaring issues with the shot. Although it is a beautiful matte, it does not look realistic in motion. Looking at this it definatly seems like a reshoot (or a way to comp to two actors into one shot becuase they weren’t there on the same day?), becuase they clearly had a set scene in the two closeup shots. But it has a massive inconistancy in ship placements from hanger establishing shot, to the wide with Lando and Han, the falcon is facing a different way. Then when Han walks of screen to the shuttle, it is on a completely different side of the hanger. The whole sequence is messed up start to finish.
On third viewing im wrong about how the ship placement is wrong, it more that there isn’t enough space for the location where Han and Lando talk, based on the Establishing shot, as its meant to be in the lower right corner, between the two ships, but there is something off about the scale/lighting/preportions of those shots, whihc is why that section reads badly, IMO.

At the end of the day, the worst part of that shot is when Lando seems to walk outside the reach of the stage lights 😂, I wonder how adywan’s gonna fix that.

it’s way too low in the shot, as opposed to how straight on Han and Lando were shot.
but I’m pretty sure adywan confirmed he is replacing these with miniatures.

That’s really nicely done! Did you use the behind-the-scenes footage (and add the hologram & scanlines effects), or did you use the existing hologram footage? Either way, you’ve done some great rotoscoping there! Was it a case of doing some refined rotoscoping, or did you use another method for isolating the footage?

I just adjusted the color till the blue Channel was isolated… that’s it. Some general masking wrapped it up nicely.

oops. Accidentally posted the top comparison without the falcon glow layer turned on.
here is the updated comparison:
(still working on the 3d model neverar, I haven’t forgotten that.)

(wipe removed for comp only)

original:

DevEd v.2

Full shot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ARgf0HUgH8pAiEEkicaik6_xcYBVik5I/view?usp=sharing

I think you nailed the trajectory on that shot to be honest. You have made the best of what is there. I think it is very charming to keep the original model fix the position and nice engine glow.

However the Planet still looks very green I distinctly remember to get it looking the right shade of Blue as when they arrive earlier it needed hue shifting quite a lot via selective correction. Obviously all the way through from green cyan to blue. Don’t be scared to be quite brutal there it is probably blue screen degredation or something. But looks very good when shifted into blue you must try it and you will see and feel when it looks like correct. Otherwise really great job on that shot 😃 Thanks

Yavin IV is green NOT blue. Since 2004 the colouring of Yavin IV was screwed and it became blue during the SE additions. But pre 2004 it was green in every other shot apart from this one, which shifted towards blue. The original closeup matte painting used when the falcon approaches showed a green planet with blue oceans. Sadly Rogue One went for the “blue planet” look also, but it was originally more green, especially being a more forest planet and it helps differentiate between Alderaan.

That’s exactly what I’ve always thought. thanks for this.
