but which animation do people prefer?

1 or 2.

one of them is more in line with the 'spirit' of the original movie. the other has a grander camera move but it is one that was done during the original film as well so technology wise it fits within the context of the movie.

I'm a bit more traditional on this one and prefer the first I think but I'm willing to hear arguments.

gold leader is pretty much done. few tweaks on textures to do but feast.

here's a before and after shot. the mesh when I got it. the mesh when I have finished with it.

also, two test anims.

these are the two angles for camera I am considering for this 4 second clip in the film. it leads into red leader saying 'all wings call in'

yavin in background.

further progress on gold leader. taking a break from the xwings at the moment.

this mesh was downloaded from lwg3d resources section but has been reworked by me. the nose section has been completely reprofiled ot make it more screen accurate. canopy has been completely redone as has upper turret gun mount.

torpedo launch tubes added underneath. main hull needs the pipework sorting out yet. new textures applied. hull dimensions have also been resized so it is more in keeping with the shooting model.

the following are a good start

I use Lightwave, my personal preference. it's the daddy and its what they use on battlestar galactica so it shows it still can do it. 300 was made with lightwave as well.

go to

http://www.lwg3d.org/v3/index.php
http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/

two good forums.

CGtalk is another place to go.

then from there you need photoshop to do your texture work which in turn leads to a lot of sites for textures etc.

http://www.scifi3d.com/

has a lot of free meshes to start off. that's where both the y-wing and xwing came from although the xwing and ywing have been completely retextured by myself along with a number of detail changes.

50% of what you see is texture and model, 50% is down to good lighting and camera I personally think.

I wouldn't mind John D's, you find me some photo's of his xwing and I'd put him in. I always liked his red helmet. ooooeer missus.

the thing is most of the shots of red4 are a misconception.

the original red4 model got pyro'd during making the movie. ie it got blown up. for some reason the red 5 model then got its wings repainted so it was red 4 instead of 5. but the rest of the model remained the same so unfortunately I ain't got anything of red to base the textures etc on.

I don't suppose you fancy doing a little work on a certain edit, do you?

oh sure, now you come around. didn't I once suggest this?

don't see why not. once I got the y-wing up to the same standard its a case of animating. the 'easy' part. I think the lighting rig is almost there anyways.

there are a number of final battle shots I have planned. some direct replacements, others are inserts or background additions like you have done.

the codec is lagarith lossless. better for me than huffyuv. I've refrained from using xvid at the moment because the detail I'm trying to show you all gets lost with the compression so I'm keeping it raw at the moment.

urah.

red1,2,3,5 and 6 finished barring future tweaks.

all with screen accurate astromech droids.

all with accurate pilot helmets, I just didn't make the pilot of red 6 a fat git. those links were fantastic guys, exactly what I was looking for.

all looking very sharp indeed. screenies to follow.

alright you lucky people. here are two videos. one anamorphic and the other correct aspect ratio.

fx shot done at 1.85:1 as per star wars then cropped and resized for the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. starfield, main key light and ambient lighting done as seperate passes then comped in vegas 5.0

this is red 1 on a motion test. and also a lighting test to see if I can match the original movie stuff.

shot1 anamorphic ratio
shot2 correct ratio

general shout out there for everyone with archives of pictures.

I need reference of red squadron, preferably from when you've been to the star wars shows which show off the actual prop models.

I have reference for red3. tons of that, but need good reference for red1,2,4,5 and 6 and any other red squadron ships that exist.

I'm not sure they modelled beyond red 6 anway.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

ady, minor crit.

I was watching your new final battle clip and when red squadron are approaching the death star, there are inconsistencies between the background stars and when you look out the front windows looking at the death star.

forwards, the stars barely move because everyone is heading straight at the death star.

when we look back at the pilots, the stars are moving right to left diagonally quite a bit. so it creates a bit of inconsistency.

ady, is there any chance of getting the red leader shot with the mic on the right side but WITHOUT the planet background and the other changes? ie the raw shot with just the microphone change?

that would be a bear for me to correct.

PS, whoever sent adywan the explosions disc, any chance I could have a copy as well please?

ady, good spot. I'm a bit torn on this.

the problem here is one of internal inconsistency within the film itself. they only made one xwing cockpit set which has red stripes on the engines.

but the shooting miniatures didn't.

invidual fighters had individual colours.

I think what I'm going to have to do is give them all red stripes to the edge of the cowling to match the cokcpit shot.

in addition I noticed that they did not use the right fighter in relation to the right actor. obviously a by product of just shooting various action shots with the models and then putting what looked good with the film.

the new CG shots all use red 2. all of them.

even when you cut to luke so it's crap for consistency to start with. then at frame 41229, it's wedge skimming the surface, but the miniature you see next, is red 1 you can tell by the massive scorch on the nose. which you see again at 43566 when red leader is killed, ie it is red 1.

sO I'm going to have to get selective I think.

wow, noone commented on the last file, must be brilliant.

anyway, after a chat with mike verta and a lot of photoshop work today, I've got the xwings much more photoreal.

voila, a new red leader, with a much more photoreal texture, spec maps and diffuse maps applied. also diddled the surface properties as well.

not finished yet, engine housing, engines, and laser tubes, and the nose cone need doing yet.

doctor M, in this particular case I'm with the xo crew.

there are so many times I thought 'I'm gonna be finished soon' and then things change and new techniques/footage come out that make you rethink.

just ask russ15. the number of times I've said to him, its coming its coming and then nothing for months.

ANH is just soooo flawed in the various transfers we have, it takes a lot of fixing.

48% check.

don't worry about the engine glows. everything is being colour corrected to red anyway. the engine glows in ROTJ and ESB were red so I see no need for them to be pink in ANH.

yeah, the article is a it biased, but you can't argue with the results they get on battlestar, some top notch stuff, particularly in this latest season. it is an interesting article in itself because of what he says about the work ethic etc in the studio.

well let me put it this way.

the battlestar articel blew me away for two reasons.

1.) a lot of what was said was so obvious but to someone not in the industry, a revelation, plus it has improved my workflow methodology.

2.) battlestar is done entirely in lightwave.!!!!

battlestar article link

link to xwing video

still not happy with the engine flares but the rendering and the motion is really coming together.

I'm using the software renderer in lightwave.

I found a link to a great article by one of the guys who worked on Battlestar Galactica. very good regarding rendering break outs of scenes, multiple composition etc.

mini update. I'm working on a new model of an x-wing at the moment which needs completely re-texturing. anyone who's done 3D will tell you that texturing takes a bunch of time. still, things are going well. the 3D work is now much much better and it will enable me to broaden the number of shots I'm thinking about replacing/redoing.

y-wing has also been reworked with new more accurate canopy and textures as well.
