codec issue.

okay, I'll buy that for a dollar.

regards the ouput. yup, all my original output was done via virtualdub because I used a number of filters first prior to exporting to an avi. things like whitebalance etc.

second, nope, didn't use your shot as it happens, it seems two great minds have been working in parallel once again.

That was a seven layer composite.

I made a backplate of the left side of the falcon rec area so I had a clean background to overlay the lightsaber against. that allowed me to omit the really bad roto frames and get it more in line with the hilt.

then my new blade + glow got overlaid over the top.

you'll see on the video clip. dammit, problem with uploading. my wireless connection has dropped back to basic throughput. yegods, its 1.30 am. I'l upload in the morning.

basically. it is not due to the codec. it is not compression artifacting but some kind of interference being displayed in clips.

at frames 2209, 2226, 2247, 2272, 2284.

as you can see, it affects a layer, not the whole clip. ie it is interference being caused by Vegas' own outputting. if I output again, similar appearance seen, but at different frames.

specific to certain clips. all clips are RGB when put into vegas project timeline in huffyuv codec. . none of the original clips have any visible problems when displayed on any other video playback programme, it is only within vegas that this wierdity is being introduced and even then, it does not consistently apply it, which implies some bug within the program rather than the clip itself. at least to my way of thinking anyway.

done! grief, two days for 3 minutes of footage but it was worth it.

god dammit jim, I'm a doctor not a video editor.

that's what it feels like sometimes folks. particularly when you are spending time correcting that which lucasfilm couldn't be bothered to do properly in the first place.

on a sidenote, yes I am aware there is some wierd artifacting on a few frames. it's caused by Vegas 7.0 and regardless of which codec is used. anyone care to shed some light on why it's happening because it is very inconsistent and happens in quite a few of the clips throughout the project. it doesn't even always appear in the same place twice when you output.

I just have a general objection to a praxis ring. it's been done before and it's not a new thing to see visually, no matter how well ady's done his. kudo's for that by the way. however, I was conisdering pinching the armageddon explosion of the asteroid for alderaan, then a conventional explosion for the Death Star.

anyway, I've fiddled my explosion a bit more and will post it shortly.

ha! beat you to it with mine!

but

you total git! ;D stealing my thunder like that.

it looks brilliant, I'm just not sold on the whole praxis fire ring. it's been done and done and done. however, it don't half fit this. very very good.

just one crit.

you used the the original grainy death star beam. if you've done all the other changes to that shot, I would recomposite the beam.

I am for mine.

yup, it's the item from empire of dreams.

you have to flip it vertically to get it back in the right place. plus about the first four frames are missing so I used citizens version to give me the first few frames of the explosion. each frame was individually corrected in photoshop but even then there were about 4 frames I couldn't fix.

I'm revisiting this anyway and re-comping the blow up, alderaan, the starfield, the death star beam.

I'm now past mos eisley. hooray!!!! first time in months. I'm up to alderaan destruction and I'm pulling something special up for that. I've been working on this frame by frame for about 2 days now.

jump cut no more!

I've gone from

P4 2.8 HT
1GB ram
fx 5200 gerforce card
1.2ters storage
21" monitor

to

intel duo core 2.4
2gb ram
8800gtx
1.5 ters storage
21" monitor

I fancied quad core but just couldn't afford it.

the duo core I've got is very cost effective regards the performance price curve + there is a price drop from intel in june which apparently will make the duo core 2.4 about £130 + VAT making it very affordable. if you aren't buying for a month or two, hang on and get it then. duo core's kill stone dead AMD in the video editing stakes at present.

the majority of the second half of the film is colour balancing rather than fixing anything per se. I need to make another pass at the lightsabers., the transparencies aren't quite there yet.

rock on. new system is setup and working and rattling along like a dream. god it's quick. dual core is an absolute dream when it comes to rendering etc. what took my old system 55 seconds, this thing does in 10.

by my estimate, a full render will take about 10 hours instead of the 49 it did previously.

test sequence of escape from tatooine.

color corrected and I've copied *note copied* adywans' star destroyer shot.

ie I recreated it myself using a new background digital plate etc.

available for 7 days only.

thank god. finally ordered my new system. then I can get this project finished.

the last 4 months I've been held up because the project file is now so big, my machine a P4 2.8 HT can't cope. Vegas crashes left right and centre and it will take over 48 hours to render the avi, even if it doesn't crash. I've been restricted to picking and pawing at it in the meantime. so allowing for a week or two to set this puppy up, and then we're off again.

ha, I know what you mean about the tantive IV section.

it's an absolute bitch to color correct. there are blues and red casts all over the place. this doesn't include the fact that the troopers shirts change colour from blue to grey on a frightening basis.

I had a lot of fun that week ;D

@ adywan, question.

I'm making my own version of your star destroyer shot as the falcon escapes tatooine. but where did you get the star destroyer from? I'm having trouble finding them. I presume they're from ESB but I can't see to find it.

*EDIT*

I think I know why I can't find it.

it's in ROTJ isn't it?

when the shuttle is approaching the executor with escorting SD's and luke says something like. I'm endangering the mission, I shouldn't have come.

*EDIT*

*well it's not that scene*

oh that's.

there's one or two creative choices I personally don't agree with but you can't argue with the quality of what you're doing. fantastic stuff and I'm really looking forward to seeing it on my 46" lcd screen with the lights down.

I'll just second what someone else said, the hyperspace spin when han is talking to leia just feels tooooooo sllllooooooooowwwwww. it needs to spin faster really. other than that though, great. the shimmer to the lightsabers is very nice as well although does that mean you'll be adjusting the sabers in ROTJ, ESB and the prequels? because they don't shimmer in them.

it is a nice idea, but dramatically, not strictly necessary. it starts to telegraph stuff.

in empire strikesb ack, vader knows about skywalker. its nice our imagination can fill in the blanks as to how he knows.

too much is as bad as too little.

take the wampa example. in the original ESB there's tons of menace because we don't really see it. its hints here and there, rather like a horror or jaws. come the SE and you see lots of it and it spoils things in a way because it takes away the menace. for me, the same rules apply here.
