Info: awful colour values / poxiness of the 2004 'official dvds'
Time

man, the more I colour correct this puppy mverta style, the more I can’t believe that lucasfilm let this get released as it is.

the colour values are so screwed its unbelievable. some scenes are so blue and red boosted i cannot believe that so called THX ‘quality control’ certified this thing.

example, techdome on tatooine after the droids have just been purchased. everything is red shifted, too dark and blue values have been boosted over 40% above normal to make artoo’s blue ‘fit’ the other films. the only problem is it looks ridiculous. it’s so obviously wrong.

luke’s shirt is a reddy pink rather than white and the black values are all over the place.

hey, its fixable but its annoying that someone like me with £1500 of computer equipment is having to do what should have been done in the first place.

Info Wanted: a question for the pro's - which is the best OT preservation release?
Time
well I wouldn't say it takes an expert to venture an opinion and a lot of the sets are attractive for different things.

some have a seperate music soundtrack
some have an uncompressed PCM soundtrack

some are anamorphic, some aren't so to say this is best over that one is very subjective. don't be surprised if a bit of flak comes towards this thread. on the doom9 video editing forum when someone asks, "which is the best filter" etc it usually attracts some acid comments.

now this forum is much more well behaved so maybe not, but....

personally I've only seen Dr Gonzo's, the Isomix, Farsight and the Editdroid sets.

For sheer picture quality I would plump for editdroid as being my personal preference. its not anamorphic but it's a good solid authored disc with nice menus and good sound.

Isomix is good as well but I find the colour balance on editdroid is better. isomix is a bit pinky for hue but looks fine on TV so YMMV.

Info: Any Interest In A Corrected 2004 DVD? (“Deliberate Creative Decisions” info)

sounds good. it would be nice if the sound was provided as a seperate ac3 file we could play with. it would be nice to have access to a properly mixed 5.1 from an official source material disc that wouldn't need to much screwing with to make it fit an original version of the film.

rikter if I was to mail you a disc or make some arrangement to get this thing would you be willing to burn a copy off for me?

Idea & Info Wanted: 1997 Special Edition LD on DVD?
Time

anyone know if there is a good DVD boot of the SE from LD?

I ask because things occured to me tonight regarding image quality etc.

we all know the special editions of the trilogy were digitally recomposited so the space scenes at end of ANH + snow battle were much better right?

however the DVD visual quality is too much better than the LD for us to mix the two, that is generally agreed although I know mverta is gonna prove us all wrong on that score. well what about the SE LD which got bootlegged onto DVD? the SE on LD by my fuzzy memory wasn’t that bad. okay so it needs color correcting to match the faces or DE LD but we get a source that boasts similar picture detail as the OT LD from the faces or definitive edition version, + can then cull out the recomposited space action.

but, was there a boot DVD of the SE LD that was ever any good? what about the LOOK SE set? is that any good anyone?

limitedsharpen() with avisynth
Time
I personally dn't use limitedsharpen anymore. I've found using blinddehalo3 and unfilter delivers a nicer looking result and is less of a resource hog too.

don't get me wrong, it's good, but to make it time effective you need a bit of oomph behind it to make it work well. it does a lot of resizing and supersampling you see.

I generally got good results with this

LimitedSharpen(ss_x=1.5,ss_y=1.5,Smode=3,overshoot=3,special=true,strength=125)

more strength than that produced some nasty artifacting.

go to this threaddoom 9 forum limitedsharpen thread

and it spells out what you need as regards dll's

eliminating the whole sound weapon thing entirely is going to be hard. early on there is a scene with the emperor and the guild discussing the duke's soldiers and their 'new weapon' to be fair I think lynch did okay introducing this as a way of getting round the impossibility of coming up with someone moving really fast a la the books' ie the wierding way' he had a limited budget and it would have required too much sfx work to make it happen. of course today, the computers make it easy. and in fact they did manage it as an effect in the miniseries but I don't really mind the sound modules too much.

Help Wanted: need some footage - mos eisley approach - help
Time

I’m posting to the group from a shopping mall while the wife shops. joy! If I see another mall it’ll be too soon but it’s bank holiday weekend, what do you thinks gonna happen tomorrow?

anyway I’m still fiddling with my capture but the big stand out thing that makes it fall apart is mos eisley. people on the board have provided me with footage in the past. (mebejedi, moth3r and russ to name a few) so big thanks for the help in the past. But I’m wondering if anyone could do it again? the problem is it’s a larger clip.

I’m needing the mos eisley approach from when ben says “we must be cautious” and it cuts to the crap matte shot of the background and the speeder, to when the speeder has pulled up outside the cantina and threepio says he hates jawa’s cos they’re disgusting creatures.

that’s a lot of frames and I know it’s no small thing to ask.would there be any way anyone would be able to help on this at all?

this would improve both my LD project and also allow me to matte out the ronto’s from the DVD release. I can’t matte from such a poor source which I have at the moment.

if anyone is able to help at all then please pm me to discuss how I can get the footage, whether it’s FTP somewhere or perhaps cut to disc for which I will pay to cover postage costs etc.

Either NTSC or PAL does not matter and if its progressive that would be a big help, either 25fps progressive for PAL or 23.976fps progressive for NTSC.

I know this is no small amount of footage I’m asking about but I’m a bit stuck on both projects unless I can improve my footage in this area.

Video Editing: Where Do I Start?
Time
building on what mebejedi said. here's another site you need to bookmark and make a common port of call.

http://forum.doom9.org/

is the doom 9 forums, and

http://forum.doom9.org/

for the main site that is more general news etc.

this site is filled with people with a broad range of experience to draw upon.

to get into things at a cheap level go to http://www.virtualdub.org/ and download virtualdub. this is a free god value editing tool and for most people here, the base program of choice for a lot of basic editing such as splitting files, recompressing, color correction etc.

when used in conjunction with www.avisynth.org which is a site that deals with a scripting language where you can use additional filters in conjunction with virtual dub. virtualdub, or vdub as it is more commonly referred to also does video capture so as I said, it's a good cheap way of getting into the hobby.

from the audio side of things, soundforge isn't bad but expensive, Sony vegas 5.0 is a capture program, linear editor, and sound mixing suite and very very good. there were some older threads that dealt with how to make 5.1 sound out of stereo tracks on this board and doom9 goes into this in a great deal of detail.

besweet is a good program to convert wav's to mp3 or ac3 digital files. there's a lot more I could say but the best thing to do to get started is to get virtualdub, look into avisynth and all the additional filters you can download and read on doom9 forums and just start playing. you learn a lot just by doing and if you need advice, the guys on the board at doom9, videohelp.com or here can help you out if you have issues.

Info & Help Wanted: has anyone got the isolated score? on it's own?
Time

as title says.

anyone got the isolated score on it’s own, or is it hosted anywhere? its an extra I’d like to add to my set but I’m having great trouble with my broadband downloading 2gb+ files so I’ve not been able to get stuff from my bittorrents for a while that’s quite large. I’m using ABC by the way.
