Thanks for all the comments, keep them coming.

Color correction is not final. We are waiting on a better print, and will be able to make better decisions based on that and others for reference. We are confident that these will be the closest to the originals we can find, other than the possible LPP.

Here is the third and final part of the duel scene:

====================

1. There is too much damage in these clips. Though they may look clean, they will need to be worked on.

2. There is still compression issues, stepping down to this level, and also done on dailymotion.

3. The sound is not finalized.

4. There is slight color correction on it.

5. Image is cropped for theatrical presentation.

 Indeed!

Are these prints in better shape (as far as scratches, glue, and other damage), than some of the SW/ESB prints?

All of them are in very good shape, with a few splices.

(Just to note : The Star Wars LPP was also in very good condition except for a few headers and tails).

We should be able to get a complete print out of them.

Welcome to the official thread for the discussion of Return of the Jedi - 35mm Theatrical Version 1.0

This is the collective project that is not officially part of OT, or Lucasfilm, 20th Century Fox, Disney, etc. but in the spirit of preservation, has been put together with the wish to relive the memory of the original 1983 Return of the Jedi.

We hope to make quick progress, but we have some more steps to take.

This is the place to keep on top on the when/where/how/who/and why of it.

A lot of information is  sprinkled through the original discussion thread about - Star Wars 35mm . we’ll take just the details and emphasize them here.

If you want to discuss technical stuff, post it here.

This is just to keep people informed on the status and updates.

What is it? - A conversion/preservation of the 35mm version of Return of the Jedi from: Multiple LPP prints

Who are we? - A group of individuals working on it, color restoration and technical advisory, support

Why? - Because we love the Star Wars Trilogy, and appreciate George Lucas.</span>

When will it be out? - Its done when its done.

Where can we find out more? - Right here.

Technical details…

Video - Our goal is to have a preserved version that will be released in a high definition 1080p anamorphic MKV

that is full frame for people with projectors (25gigs), and bluray disc (25gigs), and a dual layer dvd (9gigs) as the final product.

There might be several other downsamples in avi/mp4 later on.

Audio - we will have the 35mm English theatrical mix.

Thanks from our entire team!

Here's a more extended clip of the duel sequence, including Leia and Lando.

This is a 1080p Clip:

=====================================================

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/k1nZxPlqCNx4K47X4IM

We will be posting the other parts shortly.

Notes:

---------------------------------

1. Unlike the previous 720p preview, this is a newer version with some improvements in the scan.

2. Not all members of the group have all the same files, due to the huge file sizes. I only had the previous preview originally, so that's why it was was lower resolution. Maybe the other member you refer to had a better quality one.

3. We have multiple prints. The previous clip was from a faded Kodak print, this one is a mix of that and a Fuji print used as the basis for a DCP that was screened privately.

4. We also have another faded partial fuji print. This was used for filling in missing frames.

5. We will also have a much higher quality fujicolor print coming in the future. There is also talk and rumor of an LPP print, but we are looking into that.

6. NONE of these clips have ANY clean up or restoration work done on them. These were merely test scans done to guage their quality. We are still quite aways from working on this film.

7. Color correction was done on all clips, unless otherwise stated as such.

There is something that i have been meaning to ask, but it seems you don't have a thread specifically for ROTJ, so i will ask here.

There is a section on ROTJ that is out of focus on the HDTV & Blu-Ray versions. As you have a print of ROTJ i'm hoping you can check this section and post some screenshots that can settle an ongoing argument. From the point of the shuttle reaching Endor and giving the code right up until the beginning of the speeder bike chase ther difference is sharpness is terrible. there seems to be some sort of horizontal smearing. The worse shot that really shows this problem off is the shot below. If you could just post a hi-res screengrab off your scan of this one shot then it would prove one way or another iif there was a huge problem with the official ROTJ transfer

and here is a comparison between 2 shots inside the shuttle of Han that also shows the difference between two sections of the film

It looks like we will have an answer to this question in a week or two.

Adywan, as soon as we can get those clips/pictures to you we will. There are still a few more steps to go with them.

The screenshots wouldn't need to be from your finished version to show if the problems are with the official transfer or with the film itself. Screenshots from your raw untouched scan would easily show if the same problem exists on the theatrical prints. Plus posting these screenshots from your raw scan would also prove to those that are saying that you don''t even have the prints that you actually do

Thanks

We will post something as soon as we have some results.

Harmy said:

No, there aren't as far as I know but you can see in Team Blu's version, that once you get rid of the tint added in the home video versions, the '97SE bears clear signs of being timed to the I.B. print.

We are looking into all three of them. But it will be a lesser priority than the other projects.

Has the OT ever been exhibited theatrically as a dcp???? The Lowry master, aside from being used for its initial purpose in the 2004 dvd release, has only ever been used for hd broadcasts and the blu-rays. They've never used it to make a dcp for theatrical exhibition, not to my knowledge anyway.

 ESB was shown privately:

Yes, we've heard of it, and looked into it.

We have an alternate solution that's just as capable though.

It's not the issue of the scanning anymore. We have more sources to go through, and cleaning up the frames which is the time consuming part.
