Team Negative1 - Return of the Jedi 1983 - 35mm Theatrical Version (unfinished project)
Time

Thanks for the comments everyone. Nice to see the interest level picking up.

We will address questions as we get to them, and post some more screenshots.

Poita is correct, there is quite a large blueish tint to the whole print, and with some color correction, it looks quite natural again

Although parts of this print are in great shape, we are waiting other parts for replacements with the frames that do have damage.

It's very watchable as is, but needs some stabilization and cropping to be closer for most viewers to watch.

Could you post the two frames with the burn marks on the Tantive IV?

Actually, that previous link is correct. However, some of the links are broken.

Go here for a full listing of them:

We also will be posting some other requested shots.

Stay tuned for those.

Again, thanks for all the compliments. Keep in mind this is a very early preview version, without any adjustments except color, and a little cropping.

We just had to post the classic, "I love you", "I know" scene:

Wow! That looks fantastic - so refreshing to see the scene of Luke in his X-wing flying to cloud city without the horrible DNR smearing of the GOUT, or the almost CGI looking version from the digitally scrubbed blurays. I love how it all looks so natural, and yet has a very 'punchy' feel to it too. Lovely & crisp! Nice to see the carbon freezing chambers lighting looking that shade of orange again too - they really cocked that up on the bluray. Are you going to pretty much keep these colour settings? Really does look just about spot-on to me.

Thanks for the kind compliments. This is just a first pass.

Actually, we are getting another print. That has been preserved almost as new.

This newer version might be the final reference that we need for color grading.

Hopefully, we'll have some screenshots coming up.

Has any decision been made as to whether this project will be GOUT-synced or not?  Wondering about support for subtitles and alternate audio...

FWIW, I've got 1080p BD-SUP subtitles just itching to be included (and an updated version in the works), but lack of GOUT sync could be a dealbreaker, depending on how far off it gets (subtitles are probably more forgiving than audio, which has issues if there's more than one frame of difference).

Sorry. But we haven't quite gotten to that point yet.

Don't worry, we'll work with you on this as we get  there.

I know there will be differences in a few frame counts, but I don't think it will be a major factor (hopefully) in the end.

Things we look for and requests for comments.

1) Requests for screenshots of changed parts. (As people are starting to do).

2) Issues and problems with the GOUT and bluray, so we can do comparisons. Glitches, encoding errors, and mistakes left in (Besides glue marks and burns).

Such as the blurry section issue brought up by Adywan.

3) Comments about the images, and quality of preview images and videos.

4) Descriptions of errors or bloopers that people might not have seen.

5) Dialogue changes and different versions of soundtracks.

There are many of these that have been done for Star Wars, and Empires.

Links to discussion about Return of the Jedi would be good too.

There are too many things to list, this is a just a few of them.

We know there are experts out there for each film, we would like to hear from them, or for inquisitive people that want to know about this film.

===================================================

The community might not ever have a chance to inspect and examine these prints.

We have them now, and can do close up inspections of every single frame, giving us a unique perspective of this.

When have we ever had that before? Granted the blurays have higher quality images, and give us some good references. But nothng can beat having the actual real 35mm film, and the high definition scans.

We would think there are plenty of mysteries to explore, and plenty of answers that can be given out.

Take this opportunity for this film, and also for Star Wars and Empire Strikes back to ask them.

We will do our best to find out the answers.

I wanted to chime in that I certainly have interest in this project, just nothing to add to the discussion by posting.  I wouldn't necessarily equate a less-active thread with less interest in the thread topic.

^ THIS.

The less people post, the less screenshots and previews that will be put up.

There's no point in us just putting them up without any comment. There's always something to notice, and reply to.

If you're interested, but don't comment, then it appears that there is no interest.

No one here is a mind reader. We can't gauge what people are thinking unless they say something.

I don't know all the details of this movie, as I've only seen it a few times.

(Less than 5 times).

So if anything is missed, we need people to tell us about it.

Jedi is by far the least favorite of the movies from what we've seen. The only reason to preserve it, is just to complete the trilogy.

Otherwise we'd skip it, and move onto to other more interesting projects.

That being said, when the time comes, we'll give it some recognition.

Glad to see people are excited about it. It's been awhile. But remember, we still have quite a ways to go. But we are making good progress.

No estimate yet, but we're hoping this year if we can get it done.

Otherwise, you'll just have to wait patiently and keep up with the updates.

As Adywan says, it will be released when it's done, and its not done quite yet.

Please keep monitoring this thread for updates.

====================================================

We are still soliciting comments on how we will approach distribution when the time comes.

Thanks for all the compliments, and enthusiasm.

 I'm interested, I just don't have a lot to input anymore =)

Also, I've been browsing using my laptop a lot lately, and it's not quite powerful enough to watch the videos =( And then I forget to check them later on my desktop.

Dailymotion streams the video at variable rates.

You can watch in 320p/480p/720p and 1080p.

I for one, would love to see Vader's eyebrows.

All three of your projects make me giddy, to really see the original unaltered films exactly as they were. Return of the Jedi was my favorite when I was younger, and I anxiously await your release.

We have all the contact information, so when the time is right, we will send you emails about getting a bluray or DVD version of it. No expense on your part. All you will need to do is confirm your address, and be confidential about it and not share it, until it is ready. If you agree not to share, but still do so, you will barred from getting Empire, and Jedi and other future releases we have planned. We will also take preventative measures.

Also, will you ship the movies internationally or only in the US?

We will ship discs to wherever you are. And yes, there will be a tracking system in place on the discs for security.

We're not done yet, but we want to have things in place when we are.

Also, sorry to those new to this forum or board. But we don't have the time to accommodate new requests, as this has been an ongoing effort for the last several years. It wouldn't be fair to those that were with us during those times. Those that donated will also be getting them first.

We are doing this as a thank you, and digital distribution, while more efficient, is less personal.  Of course, when the final distribution comes out, it will be digital for the remaining people.

Those that offer detailed, and constructive feedback will also get a few more surprise perks that we haven't announced yet either.

It will be worth the wait.

Well despite your best effort, my hopes are up. :P

Do you think, then, that it surpass the others films in completion status? Or perhaps it already has, for Empire.

Easily, yes. There is a small push to get this out after Star Wars, or even before it, if possible.

There will be a screening of this movie, just like the other two. So we will know later this year, how feasible it will be.

Comments are the only way for us to know about interest, otherwise, what is the point of posting pictures and videos, without feedback.

Lots of people want to see what is being worked on, and the quality of it, since we don't have a real official version out.

There are many comments about all kinds of minute details for other projects, this restoration needs other people to look it at, besides ourselves. Or we will be the only ones that end up enjoying it.

So feel free to post relevant questions, and comments about images, quality and other topics.

Very much interested. But also well aware that it will probably be quite a wait before it is complete.

Not to get your hopes up. But the damage is relatively a lot less than empire. It's a lot more than our Star Wars LPP.

We do have multiple prints, so we can combine them for a better one.

Honestly, besides color correction. More than 60% of this movie is watchable right now.

Just for public notice. Not that we are completely ready, but at some point this issue needs to be addressed. As you can see we have made some substantial progress.

Once we are done with the first version that is viewable by our standards, we would like some feedback before the final release.

A lot of our support, through comments, material, and money has come through our blogs. (Both of them). We would like to thank our early supporters.

We have all the contact information, so when the time is right, we will send you emails about getting a bluray or DVD version of it. No expense on your part. We would like some feedback on this procedure, and general thoughts to take into account.

Thanks
