team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)
Time

The color will be adjusted for each scene, and checked on calibrated monitors.

Here's another minute of Ben deactivating the tractor beam, and the rest coming out of the trash compacter:

Saturday Night Fever PG version (Released)
Time

Its easy to find to amazon :

==========================================

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6300213994/ref=cfb_at_prodpg

And on ebay for cheap prices.

Just get that and a digitizer, and you're done.

That being said. One of our group has it digitized from VHS to an MPG. If we find it, we'll try to post some screencaps.

Team Negative1 - Return of the Jedi 1983 - 35mm Theatrical Version (unfinished project)
Time

We are currently working on a preview of the Lapti Nek scene, and later the Sarlacc pit scene.

So far the work in progress looks great, as there is not much damage on this print (version 1).

Harmy has also posted a video of this scene already. Our cleanup will look slightly different.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)
Time

We are projecting some ideas for the ESB Grindhouse plus v3.1, so far:

==========================================

1) It will be 720p, this is just more convenient to work in, although the source is 1080p.

2) It will be MP4/MKV file with one audio track, the 35mm theatrical.

3) The cleaning varies from about 60%-80% of all the dust and dirt. Some of the more difficult parts (strings/ropes) might still be visible.

4) Parts of it will be color corrected.

5) It will be cropped.

6) It will not be GOUT synced, or have subtitles, etc.

7) We will not be dedicating too much more time to this. It was done because we have multiple machines rendering, and this was the first test. Of course the results are being used for Star Wars and Return of the Jedi.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

We will definitely be doing scans of the SE in 4k when the time comes. But the eventual end product will be HD 1080p, because that's what the vast majority of people will have and use.

Not enough people can watch 4k on their computers, or have TV's with that yet.

But it will be good to future proof them when the time comes.

The SE versions are very important, as a historical record. And also due to the preference of many fans for these versions. These were their first viewings of the Trilogy in the theater, and also were pivotal in bringing back Star Wars to the public for recognition, and reviving it.

No, all of our latest scans are 4k, and we have redone some of our earlier ones. So now the majority of them are in 4k.

We don't have a workflow for anything higher than 1080p currently. But we are considering future proofing so that when the time, equipment and space requirements are better, we can work with them at that point.

The vast majority of people can not view, or have machines that are capable of watching 4k video on computers, or their TV's yet.

One of our members has a few dedicated machines to use for rendering and clean up of our 2 prints of Jedi.

We will be assembling a private version to preview how it looks to estimate which sequences will need the most work.

We will try to post some comparison clips when we have a chance.

As far as helping Harmy out goes, it goes both ways, as he will be assisting us also with the work.

We have a long way to go on some of these shots. In fact we are working on better replacement ones for those, so there won't be any problems.

Here is a comparison of the original Head of Reel 6, and the cleanup. Ignore the color change, as that will be corrected later on

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

We agree about the importance of the SE versions, and the prequels. Of course we will have to preserve them with care also.

We know Disney will never be able to figure out how to release those properly either, even if we walked up to them with a completed copy. They would still find a way to mess it up.

The scene changes occur on what are called glue frames or splices.

"Strips of footage would be hand cut and attached together with tape and then later in time, glue"

So it is glue, and partially at times, part of the next frame.

After each one, the next scene change would be spliced to it, in this case, the next shot is this:

===================================

A cleaned up version:

================

Alternate frame:

==============

So just think about how this cleanup has to be done, at times after every scene. That is why cropping it off, will be the best way to preserve the original shot.
