4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Good luck to the people that will have to wait forever, for vapourware and announcements of a hypothetical release.

Disney's silence is the best thing that has happened to the original Star Wars trilogy in a long time.

We'll be happily working on our own, and enjoying the results along with everyone else that has the patience to wait for it, and finally get to see Star Wars receive the respect and treatment it deserves.

Here is an additional short clip, continuing from the previous one near the end of Reel 1.

NOTE : Again, this is a temporary test clip.

No stabilization, or cropping has been done on it,

at some point a Deflicker effect will be applied to it also:

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Anyone hoping for a release of the original Star Wars in 4k, is just getting their hopes up prematurely. Time has shown that they are not capable of handling a project of this scope no matter how much money and time they are willing to spend on it.

There are many more talented people on this board, working on solutions actively, and with better results than they could ever hope to reach.

It's not worth getting a token Subpar barebones release of the OOT, because it deserves much more comprehensive treatment. In the end, it would be better to get nothing from them, than any attempt they would make at trying to do it properly and failing miserably.

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

The demand for the OOT has diminished, and dwindled to the point, where it's not even worth the bother of re-releasing it in any new formats.

Regardless of ownership rights, and privileges, and whatever Lucasfilm has to say about it.

Disney, won't have a option, and will never do a proper job with. Its just better to forget they even have anything to do with Star Wars, and move on with restoring the projects ourselves.

Just go to the Other Projects forum on this board, or any other, and you'll see endless complaints of Disney's handling of every project they have done. Yes, even Pixar Short films. (Not that we care about those).

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Just to clarify it here. A 4k restoration of Star Wars from Disney/Reliance would be pointless. They obviously don't have the resources, motivation, or incentive to do a proper restoration. Speculating about it, which may seem entertaining, is just diverting effort from the real job of doing it ourselves.

Disney can let the originals rot, or stay locked away forever. The results would be the same. Any attempt they make will end in a total disaster, just like all their other projects.

Lets all move onto getting this done the right way.

We will be restoring all 4 of the Raiders movies at some point from 35mm. The current releases are lacking, in both colors and other changes. It would be nice to also fix Alien, and possibly Terminator, and other classics.

As to whether Disney will ever release the Original trilogy, we have a vote of no confidence that they ever will. Even if a miracle happens, they will inevitably make mistakes, and release a subpar product. We really don't care if they consider it or not, considering the poor quality control they have always had.

Disney spells disaster for Star Wars. Period. Anyone hoping for anything good to come out of this arrangement is just wasting their efforts.

As usual, it's up to all of us, to do the real work, and save the movies properly.

Here is a sample from Reel 1 to give you an idea:

There are plenty more video samples under from us there.

We are doing dust/dirt cleanup, cropping, stabilization and other repairs. There will also be major color correction done to the scenes along with flicker removal.

We are not enhancing the originals or introducing new elements that were not there. Finally, we are not over-enhancing the images or videos.

Here is the last current state of the project:

We are not collaborating with anyone else on this project. It is mostly self sourced using prints that we have obtained or borrowed.

All the original elements, like reel change marks, and other artifacts will be left in.

Info: Opinions of fan preservation projects from an individual who saw the original film elements
Time

Don't forget, that there are many samples of Star Wars, and Empire Strikes Back from the original 35mm that we have scanned, and corrected to show examples of.

Although the faded source for our Grindhouse ESB was used, some scenes are definitely comparable and authentic in regards to the original release.

We are adding another computer to our rendering group today. We will be having some very interesting updates in the upcoming days.

Just to reiterate.

1) We will probably have a pre-release just for members of the blog, and to those that donated in the past.

2) Our work will always be free, and not kept just for the private use of individuals.

3) We are not concerned with any future Disney release or supposed 4k version, as we have a vote of no confidence on any future releases from them.

4) We are not worried about copies of the release being suppressed or held up, as multiple copies will exist, and multiple methods for distribution will be used.

We look forward to the future, and the New Hope we have for preserving this and the rest of the original trilogy.

There are at least 3 versions of the ESB out. The original Grindhouse, a DCP cut, and the ESB deconstructed. Along with color corrected versions.

People are free to correct, and use those for their own projects.

The final cleaned version, will be based on a Fuji print, that has much better color quality and minimal damage to the print.

It will be awhile before we get around to releasing that.
