4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

From awhile back, but still relevant:

======================

About to put even more pressure on physical disc formats, Gray said, is the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) video compression standard, which doubles the amount of data that can currently be streamed while keeping the "high-definition" format. HEVC can support 8K Ultra-High Definition content with resolutions up to 8192x4320.

The Blu-ray Disc format simply never hit the market levels of the DVD format, which dominated the home entertainment landscape in 2004 with $21.9 billion in sales representing a whopping 96% of home entertainment spending.

Since that peak, optical disc sales have plummeted by about 30%, according to the Digital Entertainment Group. Surprisingly, DVDs still have respectable sales figures, driven mainly by kiosk-style rental machines such as Redbox.

"Many consumers see DVD as good enough," Gray said. "It is rather like a less extreme version of the CD story, where the format was so good that there was little room for improvement (at least in terms of an economically viable category)."

4K restoration on Star Wars

Cars are a poor comparison, as they are critical for infrastructure and commerce.

Entertainment is a mere luxury and not significant in the larger scheme.

Many of our members only have TVs with 720p, and are perfectly happy with them, and have no intention of upgrading to 1080p.

4k will be a spectacular failure, much like the bluray format is compared to vhs and dvd adoption. Digital files have replaced them for flexibility and forwards improvements at a much quicker pace.

Correct. The software uses interpolation, and replacement from adjacent and previous frames for the fixes.

Yes, this is being used in conjunction with other tools for our scans.

Glad to know there is an interest, but it's up to the team member working on it, to decide what to do with them.

We'll keep posting them, since the tests are ongoing.

We still don't think 4k versions will officially ever happen. But if you want to see some 4k frames scanned from Return of the Jedi, go here:

The vast majority of people don't currently have 4k moniters, or any way to play back media in that format. You could stream it at 4k, but you would need a lot of bandwidth to do it.

We'll see if we can post a 1-2 second clip in 4k to test it.

Here is the video for the previous deleted scene:

Since we are a team, we have people doing independent projects, and testing. And the one member was testing out some rendering and cleaning with other footage. The deleted scenes were a part of that.

Currently, it is not our focus, and we did not plan to do anything with the deleted scenes. It's up to that member to decide when, and if they will be used.

We are putting it up here to show the possibilities of what the clean up with software can do.

We're sure that if people wanted to use these scenes, they would have been working on them for the last few years that they were out.

This work was done in a few weeks.

We do not have any current plans to release these, they are just tests of the software. There are many commercial film restoration programs out there, much more powerful than Aftereffects.

There were thoughts of a Grindhouse plus version using the raw clips, and an extended version using the cleaned clips, but that is not certain yet.

You are seeing the clips after 3-4 compression cycles:

=================================

Downconvert to MP4 -> Watermark -> (Comparison) -> Dailymotion compression

The originals are all High quality 1080p format.

Thanks for the comments. Here is the full video without the comparison.

NOTE : This has a different correction on it, with less saturation, and a more natural contrast.

Here is another 30 second cleaned clip from Reel 1,

there are many tricky, blurry, and fast motion scenes here:

=================================

Video :

====

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/k1WVHVBNq9AY3lb9xv1

NOTE : The colors and contrast will be adjusted later. This one was saturated a little higher than normal. Also the brightness was higher, causing some of the details in the highlights to not appear.

A full clip with different effects will also be posted.

We are only emphasizing the cleanup here, and not the other details.

Here's some sample frames from a second clip - Part A section 1,

Luke watching the space battle:

==================

=====================

NOTES : This is mainly intended to show a first pass at the cleanup.

1) Glue frames, jump frames, and skipped frames are not fixed or replaced yet.

2) There are slight frame jumps in the comparison, this is due to a frame rate change, all the actual frames are there in the full video.

3) Colors will be altered later.

4) Some vertical and horizontal black lines remain, and will be fixed later.
