Star Wars on Super8 (Released)
Time

There are many issues with the 8mm print.

1) We did not correct duplicate frames.

2) Color correction is hard. We don't claim that what we do will look right in all cases. The previous tests were doing an automated test, taking the colors from other sources.

Here are some of the other tests, that still need further work,

note that there are still some blown out parts, and contrast and brightness issues:

===============================================

3) There are hardly any stars in the original files either, and the brightness and contrast have not been adjusted either.

We are hoping this test spurs other people to take the Original files, and come up with their own versions, with color correction, and other fixes.

Ok, we went back and rechecked the clip.

==========================

1) There was an issue with the first part of the clip, a layer of cleanup was left in obscuring some detail. This has been fixed.

2)  The comparison script, and method with all the compression is being changed.

This way, there won't be some many levels.

3) The clips are A/B checked against the orignals.

4) There is some light auto cleanup, but that's not what caused the problem.

5) This is just a first pass WIP, there is more checking going on, as these aren't final clips.

6) There will several people checking it before it goes final.

So in the end, we wouldn't worry too much about the comparison clips, there's some dropped frame going on to sync the scenes. Don't try to extrapolate too much from them.

We have at least 3 people working on that are experienced in it. These clips are just to show some of the progress being made.

I don't think we need to put all the disclaimers on every single video we post as being works in progress.

The only posted cleaned final clips, are the Intro, Crawl, and end credits.

Note, that some of the Orange marks accidentally got erased also.

Here's the fixed intro clip:

If you want a better idea of what our cleaned clips look like, check out the 2 minute preview in the 8mm version, or from the links in the posts above. (Disregard the compression).

We'll post the completed clip shortly.

Here is more cleanup of some of the iconic scenes from the first reel, continuing from the flyover:

Lots of tricky blurred scenes, and motion shots in there.

NOTE : As always, there is a blue tint to the scenes that was in the original scans, color correction will be applied on a shot by shot basis later on.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Even if the hypothetical BD 4k players support new codecs in hardware, they won't support newer ones, or if the specs change.

Cnet's take on it:

=======================

The "blu" elephant in the room is whether anyone will actually care. Though BD disc sales are still a big source of revenue for the studios, their popularity is rapidly declining. Netflix and Amazon are both offering 4K streaming, Sony offers downloads, and that's certainly just the beginning.

The fact is, 4KBD will look significantly better than any streaming feed. The compression issues we've seen with HD are just as possible with UHD (though how it's compressed is different).

Sadly, most people won't care. Worse, most people won't know there's a difference. 4K is 4K to most people (and if you're reading this, I'm not counting you in the "most" group). That's a battle not likely to be won by an archaic physical media, no matter how shiny it's marketed as being. Think that's pessimistic? How many of your friends still watch DVDs?

This is not necessarily conclusive. But if you want a preview of a 4k clip,

go here for a lower resolution downsample:

And download the 10 sec/20 Mpbs clip here:

Report back with your results (framerates, etc), here, if you have a 4k monitor or TV to watch it on.

This is not the full high bitrate version.

You can watch the clip on lower resolution monitors, but of course with everything scaled down, you won't notice much of a difference.

We've tested it on 1080p monitors, and it ran without glitches on an I5 without a graphics card. Also viewed on an ultrawide monitor (Slightly scaled down, with an Nvidia quadro, had no problems), full screen was fine.

Video - 23.976 fps

AMC Star Wars Marathon .....
Time

The person in charge of the screening had to have it private, with almost no advance notice to the hundreds of people that showed up.

Other members, are anticipating screenings in their local cities, by renting out theaters, and inviting friends.

The Team members are invited to all of them, but due to family, and other restrictions, so far its been very random who actually went.

Once we're done, we anticipate people that get the copies will have their own screenings.
