4K restoration on Star Wars

Dolby vision sounds more promising.

=======================

The Dolby format offers a high dynamic range (HDR), meaning a wider range between the whitest whites and blackest blacks in a picture, along with features including a greater contrast ratio and color gamut. It can be projected in theaters with a Dolby Vision projection system that use Christie laser projectors.

Disney's CinemaCon slate presentation will include the screening of Inside Out and a clip from its May 22 release Tomorrowland in Dolby Vision. These are the first two titles that will be released in the format, and they will also be available with Dolby Atmos sound.

In doing a comparison of the Death Star battle, and other scenes to the Bluray. Since these scenes have been recomposited, the LPP actually has more detail in them.

The Bluray backgrounds look smeared, and smoke and debris shots are also less detailed.

These are scenes without CGI in them. We will post some comparisons.

Sorry about the wording on that. These clips come from the Grindhouse version, so they have been corrected once in some cases.

Different reels and different shots were taken from different sources, at this point only the last 2 reels have extensive color correction on them. The rest have been lightly altered.

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?
Time

This is what was reported  for the SE versions:

========================================

It ultimately cost $15 million to restore all three films. Fox, which owns "Star Wars," put up $10 million to refurbish the film. Lucas, who owns the subsequent films, contributed $5 million to revamp "The Empire Strikes Back," which arrives Feb. 21, and "Return of the Jedi," due out March 7. (Fox will spend in excess of $15 million to launch the re-release.)

Disney would be fortunate to be able to come up with any money near that amount to restore the originals. Although, there are a lot more variables to contend with now, than there were in the past. So taking into account inflation and other variables, it would definitely be higher than that.

Idea & Info: Star Wars Deleted Scenes - Reincorporated?
Time

Well obviously, there is one member on our team interested in the deleted scenes, and testing out the cleaning on them. This may ultimately lead to integrating them back into the movie, when the time comes. However, this is too far down the road to consider currently.

The rest of the members have varying opinions, but overall we concur, they are just that, deleted scenes that are not integral to the movie, but more like a curiosity and a historical record of the scenes.

A few fan editors have expressed interest, and have used them in fanedits, however, that's about all the use we've seen of them. Considering the fanbase, that's a very small number.

Thanks Harmy for the reply, appreciate the comments. We wil see if we can get you some other samples. This might have been one test, that was encoded with standard settings. Those can probably be changed.

It's not the same thing, but we'll send you some sample screengrabs, and you can look at those, while we check things out.

[Just as another note, we actually have a Sony Reference monitor like the one shown above. It's not high resolution, but it would be good for previewing as mentioned.]

Thanks for the comments. To be fair, we did compare it to the bluray. And the Bluray is still better for detail.

However, we noticed there are some scenes which still have marks and dirt on them on the Bluray, especially during the trench scene.

On every frame of the sequence, there were dirt and dust, and other colored specks.

We will post some comparison shots with higher resolution stills, and much more detail on these.

Although this is low resolution, you should still be able to see how the cleanup is on it. The top is the original LPP, the bottom is the clean version.

Most of the details about this project (Although there have been some updates), are in the first post.

Continuing with previews of Reel 6, here are some quick cuts from the Trench scene with Luke and Darth Vader.

These are very tricky to clean, as each model shot, has a different background for every frame. Every frame had dirt and marks on it, so they had to be painted out individually.

There is no demand for an official release, because the Bluray was the official release. If you mean a cleaned up official release, we would argue, again, there is no demand for them, because what difference would it really make. They are deleted scenes.

Yes, we hope someday, someone will incorporate them back into the movie.

That being said, the tests continue. Here is part 3 of the Luke and Biggs scene, there is still more work to be done on these, as the right hand sides still has a lot of lines:

As much as we'd like to match the quality and detail of newer releases, we would rather be happier with a much more authentic, and closer match to the theatrical version, despite lower detail.

I think all the preview clips convey a feeling that is much closer to that in our opinion, than any released version since the Laserdiscs of the originals came out.

Those were the peak of audio and video quality at the time. We still remember the deluxe boxsets and all the care that those versions had when they came out.

We hope you get that feeling also, of stepping back into that original era of when the movie came out.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

We're confused. So watching the Empire Strikes Back in the theater, was one of the worst days of your life. And being in the hospital was the best.

Ok,  we can see that, some people felt that way, with this 2nd movie ending on a down note, and not being very conclusive.

Just kidding. You should check out our Grindhouse version too. Harmy did an excellent job on his version.

It's not exactly seamless, but very close. If you know what to watch for, you can tell right away what footage is what.

It is not possible to match the Blurays detail, period. Observation has show that.

Also, remember these are all 720p versions, there might be some more differences depending on the scenes above that.
