BSG

Thank you! thank you! thank you! I'm only halfway through the first season, but I can't get enough of. I don't know what I'll do when I'm done and have to watch season two one episode a week! Of course, I guess I could order 2.0 from the states, but I think I'll wait.

Well, I've never watched a single episode of BSG, so with the Season premiere of Season 2 (in Canada) on Saturday, I splurged on a late birthday present and bought season 1 on DVD. I have from now until Saturday evening to watch (according to the box) 12 hours and 36 minutes of Battlestar Galactica.

I'm trusting you guys. I know you won't let me down when you say a show is great.

Any GOOD memories of the PT?
Time
I didn't get to see TPM opening night (actually, I didn't see any of them opening night) because I was with my Outdoor-Ed class, and we were on a biking/climbing trip in Lake Placid, NY. So, there are 20 of us, plus our teacher and chaperones, and we decided that on our last night there, the Thursday (TPM having opened on the Wednesday) night we'd spend on the town. About half of us decided to go see a movie, and we were split between TPM and The Matrix. I went for TPM, and loved the start of the movie. Before long, though, three of us decided to "head to the can...." and snuck into The Matrix, which started a half hour later.

That's my memory of TPM, sneaking out.

I never saw AOTC in theatres. Or maybe I did. I don't really remember.

With ROTS, I went with some friends who really wanted to watch it. I think that's what made it the best PT cinema experience. The people.

... and we return with more Homophobia, here on OT dot com.

Homophobia has nothing to do with it. I simply have no interest in seeing a "gay cowboy movie" and see no reason for its existence. The first steps towards decriminalizing homosexuality in Canada were made under the rubric that "Government has no business in the bedrooms of the nation." The attitude now seems to be, "Let's rip the doors off the bedrooms and invite everybody in!"

Not my cuppa.

The movie isn't any different than something like TITANIC or ROMEO AND JULIET. It's a dramatic love story. The only difference is that it's between two guys instead of a guy and a girl. People have been writing, and watching dramatic love stories for hundreds of years. So why is this one all of a sudden BAD? Because it's about homosexuals? Sounds like homophobia DOES have something to do with it...

Besides, it's actually a good thing films like this are being made. People who are homophobic usually have very little knowledge of what they "disagree with." Movies like this help people become more aware, more tolerant and more open minded. If people just IGNORED homosexuality, then that wouldn't help prevent homophobia at all, would it?

Who's to say Gundark didn't care to see Titanic or Romeo and Juliet either? Maybe "gay cowboys" isn't the issue for him. Leave the guy alone. He's allowed to voice his opinion just as anyone else. I don't care to see it either, and it's not because of homophopia, but because the film was in developmental hell since the script was written in 1997 (!) because nobody wanted to play a "gay cowboy". Now, Jake and Heath take it on, and they're getting heaps of praise and Oscar attention for "having the balls to be gay." I don't disagree that "it's actually a good thing that films like this are being made," as you say, but I don't think it's a big deal. It's just a movie.

AOTC rating
Time
Now, I don't know what anyone else thinks, but being in Canada, I get to watch a lot of American and European television and movies. I don't think that either has more censorship, but simply that it's in different areas. That doesn't make sense, but it will. It seems to me that American censors (based on what comes out) don't care as much about violence as they do about sexuality. Network television is all crime shows and murder and this, and they don't have a problem, but you don't see nudity (almost ever!). European censors, on the other hand, don't seem to blink at the sexuality, but come down hard on the violence.

Now, I'm not saying that the Americans don't care about violence or the Europeans about sex. It just seems that they're more desensitized to it. A little bit of violence gets a higher rating in Europe than in America, but a more sexually explicit film will get a higher rating in America than in Europe.

Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the impression I get.

I think Yoda would be a little more strict about swearing. Luke would never use language like that if he knew his "uncle" could throw him across the room without touching him. Maybe you should take a lesson, there, Adam, and clean up your language before some Jedi chokes the breath right out of you.

I was hoping you might get the reference, but apparently not. I was referring to a blooper from ESB, which was seen in the Empire of Dreams documentary, where Mark Hamill has to reach in and grab the snake out of the X-Wing, and when he reaches in, the snake bites him. He replies "The fucking thing bit me!"

Oh...I was unaware of that. Sorry, Adam. I didn't catch that reference. My comment was meant more as a joke than anything else. That's the ambiguity of text for you. Thanks for telling me the reference.

Did you notice that they changed a line of the song from that episode?

On the DVD, before the episode was ever aired, the song went:
"Though by many they're abhored
Hebrew people I've adored
Even though they killed my Lord
I need a Jew "

But now, when that episode is broadcast, it goes:
"Though by many they're abhored
Hebrew people I've adored
I don't think they killed my Lord
I need a Jew"
