Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

I don’t mind the existence of Ewoks, I really don’t even mind much that their victory is somewhat implausible. I understand why someone wouldn’t like them, but I never minded them. The problem is that too much focus is on them, and the scenes on Endor are interspersed between much better scenes (Space Battle, Final Duel). The scenes don’t flow well into one another. If the Endor scenes were more brief, and they found a way to include them without jarring tonal shifts, it would be right up there with SW(ANH) and ESB.

(Spoilers)How could The Force Awakens have been more original?

The “dualism of the Force” is a total accident. Do you honestly think GL even considered anything like that? He just wanted to throw in his Midi-chloriens as random technobabble because it was referenced in an old rough draft. Then, he could further “prove” his “original vision” claims.

I don’t see any reason to doubt it because the PT presents an alternate view of so many things we know from the OT, if it was only that, maybe. But on the whole it is clearly subversive. And it’s well known that George was distancing himself from the simplistic black and white view already by the time of ROTJ with Obi-Wan’s “point of view” speech.

No, that speech was there to try to hide the fact that George didn’t plan ahead at all, regardless of what he claims.

Whenever my TFA copy comes in the mail (probably tomorrow) I’ll have to reevaluate my ranking. I’ve been on the fence about TFA over ROTJ since last I watched TFA.

As it stands now:
SW(ANH)/ESB - A+
(Which one of those is truly higher changes almost every time I think about it, so I usually avoid choosing)
TFA - A
ROTJ - A-
ROTS - D
TPM - D-
AOTC - F

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

Anyone else think the blu-ray looks a little blue? It’s nowhere near as off as the official OT discs, but it’s definitely noticeable in a good amount of scenes. I’d compare it to the way the Mad Max: Fury Road BD skewed a bit red. Other than that, I’m pretty pleased with the quality.

It was pretty blue in the theater, was it not? Both times I saw it, even the opening crawl starfield was full of blueish stars rather than white ones.

Superman Returns.

I was at Walmart and saw a “Triple Feature” pack of Superman I, II (Donner), and Returns on blu for $10 and I bought it immediately. Hadn’t actually watched Returns since it came out about a decade ago, and I didn’t remember much.

I can’t tell if they tried to keep the continuity of the 2 (1.5?) Donner movies or all 4 Reeve movies or what. They kept Marlon Brando’s Jor El, and put quite a few references to the old movies, but at times this movie contradicts them. They say he’s been gone for 5 years but it was actually at least 20 years. This is a world of cell phones and computers, and yet the only person who seems to have aged is Perry White.

Maybe they were going for the comic book existence where nobody ever ages.

The son of Superman thing was weird. The movie wants you to think it was a giant plot twist, but it was pretty obvious from the start.

The CGI hasn’t aged very well.

It’s a pretty fun movie though. Way ahead of Man of Steel. Superman is capable of happiness, which is nice.

What Didn't You Like About ROTS?

2.) First you criticize the characters for being in the same position they are in at the beginning of A New Hope, but then you criticize it for not being continuous with the Original Trilogy. Which is it?

There’s a difference between “The stories should not contradict each other” and “I want these characters to stand here and never move for ~20 years so that they can pick up exactly where the OT starts”

Movie Digital Copies as Fan Edit Source?
Time

I do not have a computer that I could possibly rip a Blu Ray disc from, but I do have a lot of unused Digital Copy codes.

Would it be possible to download these to use as the source of a fan edit?

I have two computers. One is an iMac that’s a couple years old, the other is a cheap Samsung laptop that hardly works anymore. I don’t know all the specs on them, and I can’t check right now (I’m not at home currently) but if you need to know in order to help then I’ll be able to tell you sometime this evening.

Darth Vader was an epic villain precisely because 1) his prowess in combat was far superior to the protagonist’s, and 2) his internal conflict was hidden until the very end of the trilogy.

Um… who cares? Seriously, why must a villain only be conflicted at the end of his life. Look at Macbeth, the entire story is about his internal conflict.

Personally, I think that C-3PO was hilarious in the final battle.

Don’t worry, as you mature you’ll realize he’s not.

No, I remember my mother and father laughing at C-3PO’s puns. My older sister also thought they were funny.

Are you sure they weren’t laughing at you?
